White and Hawk: Jeep’s Dancing Bears

by The Editors on June 4, 2007

Campjeep

According to a press release, Carlsbad’s favorite action sports sons Shaun White and Tony Hawk will join Tim McGraw and 80s party band The B-52s:

at Camp Jeep(R) 2007, the annual “owners only” three-day mix of off-road driving and other family- friendly outdoor activities, to be held July 26-28 at the Oak Ridge Estate in Nelson County, Va., near Charlottesville.

The Camp Jeep event, which is open only to Jeep owners, will cost $295 per vehicle. Guess putting on a show for your owners is what comes along with being sponsored. Sadly, we’ll miss this one.

The Squid and the Flying Elephant

by The Editors on June 4, 2007

Hensleys1A

Unless you were a regular at Squid Joe’s (which is entirely possible, though doubtful) then you probably haven’t noticed the transformation going on at 850 Tamarack Avenue. Squid Joe’s is no longer. Gone is the upside down boat, the fish nets, and the Jimmy Buffet meets Pirates of the Carribean motiff. The business (liquor license included) has been purchased by pro skateboarder and former Flogging Molly accordionist Matt Hensley.

Hfep LogoThe new place is called Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill and is set to open soon. The building’s mid-century modern past may get a fifth or sixth chance at life, but this time as an authentic Irish pub. The sign just went up and crews are still hard at work getting the interior set up, but it’s opening tonight in beta. We’ve heard rumors of future live music shows as well as weekend breakfast. Which sounds good to use. In the meantime, we’ll keep you posted.

World’s Tallest Lego Tower

by The Editors on June 4, 2007

Legoll3005 468X682Don’t know how we missed this one. But apparently, visitors to our own Legoland used 465,000 Lego bricks to build a 94.3 foot tall pirate ship mast last weekend to celebrate the opening of the park’s new Pirate Shores water park feature.

The 94.3ft-high pirate ship mast was made with 465,000 bricks, breaking a previous record of 93.43ft set in Denmark last year. . . A “treasure” made of gold, yellow and clear Lego bricks was placed on top by Legoland pirates.

Don’t you just love kicking Danish ass.

Ashworth Gets Shaken And Stirred

by The Editors on June 4, 2007

It’s been a rocky time for Ashworth Inc. workers lately. According to the San Diego Business Journal they’ve fired President Gary Schneiderman, lost an EVP, and cut 16 other positions in last month.

Ashworth’s upheaval may be what the doctor ordered, or could further compound the company’s disappointing financial results. . . . For the first quarter, Ashworth lost $2.5 million on revenue of $38.3 million, compared with a net loss of $50,000 on revenue of $40.6 million for the first quarter of 2006.

Chamber Tourney Opens The Crossings

by The Editors on June 4, 2007

Thecrossings

It’s been called “The most expensive municipal golf course ever built,” and some are putting the price tag for the The Crossings At Carlsbad at $62.8 million. To celebrate the course opening during the first week of August 2007, The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is hosting a tournament on Monday August 6. If only we golfed, what a great opportunity that would be to spread the Carlsbadistan message. Maybe we’ll just walk on. . .

Beachwalk Bungle

by Eero Lloyd Neutra on June 3, 2007

Beachwalk2

A few days ago we mentioned that Carlsbad has very few architecturally significant homes. With a couple exceptions, most reside outside The Neighborhood. Unfortunately, the construction of the Carlsbad Beachwalk (two new “contemporary designs” on the corner of Garfield and Sequoia) doesn’t change that statement at all. In fact, these two new homes, being built by Garfield Beachwalk LLC (Patrick Kellett, Gregg Dileo & Dr. Cyril F. Kellett) appear to have been designed by someone reaching far outside their skill set.

BeachwalkWith no real balance or congruity of line these two homes appear to have been cobbled together with design elements randomly chosen from several different styles.

While it is good to see anyone with this kind of investment funding moving away from the Crapsman Revival homes that clutter Carlsbad, it is sad that this project is so aesthetically off the mark.

These are, however, only drawings. We hope that when the homes are completed the architectural genius will become obvious. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Surf’s Up For Masekela

by The Editors on June 3, 2007

SalWe all know Sal Masekela as the voice of the X Games, however, the Carlsbad High School graduate has just made the jump to the silver screen as an announcer in the new Sony Pictures animated feature film Surf’s Up along with some of the surf world’s biggest names.

Yesterday, the the entire cast and crew including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and Sal, were in Westwood, California for the June 2 premiere of the film which is described as follows:

A stylistically daring CGI feature, “Surf’s Up” is based on the groundbreaking revelation that surfing was actually invented by penguins. In the film, a documentary crew will take audiences behind the scenes and onto the waves during the most competitive, heartbreaking and dangerous display of surfing known to man, the Penguin World Surfing Championship.

The film opens June 8th. Click here for more info, or the link below for all the premiere photos.

Run Babbitt Run Like a Hound Dog

by The Editors on June 3, 2007

Top Left

According to North County Times sports columnist Steve Scholfield, Bob Babbit, co-founder and publisher of Competitor Magazine is running today’s San Diego’s Rock n’ Roll Marathon (his 10th) dressed as Elvis (with the Running Elvi).

While we care very little about running or Elvis, it is a nice way to mention the Rock n’ Roll Marathon and a long-time Carlsbad resident who has built a Solana Beach-based media empire around sweaty, lycra-clad, mid-life crisis suffering body jocks. From the swarms of them we saw downtown San Diego last night sporting “I survived the [insert endurance race here] and all I got was this t-shirt” shirts, we’d have to say Mr. Babbit’s business will see no soon end.

A & N Class of 2007 Commencement

by The Editors on June 3, 2007

Angang

Today at noon, the senior class of Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad officially relinquished their command and turned it over to the junior class, while the sophomore class welcomed next year’s freshman. At least that is what we thought was going on during the “change of command parade” on Maffucci Field (a.k.a. the athletic field). With 74 cadets graduating it was the largest senior class in the Academy’s history, according to the school’s website.

Anadisplay-1Students’ families travelled from around the world to witness this annual festivity. Wealthy parents, poor parents, crying grandmothers, dads with newer, younger wives, older moms with newer plastic surgery, hot aunts with their g-strings visible above their skin tight jeans, older brothers all Tokyo popped, along with the hardworking elite of the US Military (we’re guessing here so forgive us in advance) came to see their boys, kids they hardly recognize in those white dress uniforms, march on a big lawn, parade in front of the viewing stands, and finally listen to Bill Gang Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Information Systems Laboratories give a commencement address on the lawn in front of the academy’s Davis Hall.

AnacopWhile families celebrated, Carlsbad’s Finest saw a perfect opportunity for generating some revenue for the city and proceeded to write parking tickets for each and every one of the visitors cars that were parked illegally on the East side of Carlsbad Boulevard. As one father leaned over and said:

I can’t believe they would do that on a day like this. It’s really kind of bullshit.

We couldn’t agree more. Welcome to Carlsbad, here’s your ticket. Then again it’s only June 2 and this officer probably filled his parking ticket quota for the rest of the month.

More photos after the jump.

Saturday Surf Report

by The Editors on June 2, 2007

807083-Large

Sadly, we’re only 200 steps from the beach, but we still prefer to sit here in our pajamas and check out what Surfshot.com reporter Corey M. Senese has to say about the surf at Carlsbad’s Taramack Surfing Beach on June 2, 2007:

Tamarack is looking like a nice spot this morning. The waves are head high and is showing us fair shape. There is a slight but of texture out on the surface at this spot, but nothing that is effecting the shape as of yet.

Well, Corey. Tamarack looks like a nice spot every morning, but you’re right, this morning it looks particularly nice. And who wouldn’t enjoy a “slight but of texture.” We may even drag our lazy asses down to the beach for a surf this morning. But first we’re going to do just one more thing on the computer. . .
