Beginning in October Carlsbadians will get only Papa Doug Manchester’s (right) slant on the daily news.
Who’s Papa Doug (his preferred first name) and why should we care? The hotelier-turned-media mogul bought the North County Times [for $11.95 million]. Added to his acquisition and name change to the San Diego Union Tribune two years ago, he’s hellbent on creating a Hearst-like media empire in San Diego County.
And why should we care? He’s declared an editorial war on government employees, unions, President Obama, writers who don’t help promote the community, and anyone who walks, talks or acts like a Democrat. My last North County Times column critical of the empty boosterism of Carlsbad’s latest State of the City video would not see the light of day in a Manchester newspaper. [click to continue…]
The Carlsbad Music Festival drums into town September 21-23, 2012 with some old favorites and some new groups as well.
This year’s Festival features everything from the Calder Quartet’s throughly contemporary take on the string quartet to Sara Watkins‘ personal mix of bluegrass, singer-songwriter and pop; from Wu Man’s international take on the traditional Chinese pipa to composer Michael Gordon’s epic and brilliant composition for 6 percussionists playing amplified and tuned 2x4s (yes, from the hardware store), Timber. In short, “adventurous music by the beach.”
With performances in the Carlsbad Train Station, Carlsbad Village Theater, St. Michael’s By The Sea, and the Community center it’s going to be difficult to get away from the sounds of great music in the village. We’re looking most forward to the mellow surf/jazz sounds of The Matson2. Festival passes are available for $85 individual tickets are proved between $10 and $15.
Presented by John Haedrich’s Tip Top Meats, the Oktoberfest will feature fun for the entire family including a pumpkin patch, beer, pumpkin decorating, beer, bouncy houses, beer, face painting, beer, Live music and dancing, beer, and an authentic German dinner and, or course, beer.
Dinner tickets ($10 each) are available at the event or in advance from Carlsbad Rotarians or at Al’s Cafe in the Village or Tip Top Meats. For all the details, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
Dr. Brandon Bell along with his father, Dr. Geoffrey Bell, of Bell Family Dentistry in Carlsbad (right) came up with an interesting way to donate money to the Carlsbad Boys & Girls club while at the same time encouraging their new patients to be on time and complete their paper work properly.
For every new patient that arrived for their first appointment on time with the appropriate paperwork completed, $5 was earmarked to give to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. . . . “The dentists surprised us by presenting a $500 donation to support our programs,” said Club CEO Brad Holland. “What a fantastic idea, and we’re grateful to their diligent patients as well.”
For the Bell’s it was apparently a win-win.
“It’s an honor to contribute to the community that has given us so much on behalf of our patients,” stated Dr. Brandon Bell. “The program has proven to be so successful motivating our patients and helping us to treat them in a more timely and efficient manner, while raising money to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. It’s truly a win-win situation, and this is just the beginning of a long relationship!”
Tonight from 7 to 9 PM (September 7, 2012) the Village of Carlsbadistan will bask in the bright twinkle of decorative LED lights.
The decorative lights are Phase 2 of the Village Works “Light the Village” pilot project. Phase 1 saw the addition of LED rope lights on the pedestrian poles on Carlsbad Village Dr. between Carlsbad Blvd. and Roosevelt St.
Now through a partnership between businesses, property owners, and the City of Carlsbad, the whole Village looks a little brighter. For the official word, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Carlsbadians who couldn’t afford the $85-a-plate Chamber of Commerce State of the City report luncheon at the Sheraton last month were invited to a free showing of a ten-minute video at the Dove Library a few days later. Former Mayor Bud Lewis didn’t like to give or listen to long speeches, so he turned to videos to serve as the annual report to city residents. Mayor Matt Hall continued the tradition, sacrificing information for feel-good entertainment.
Sinclair Lewis would have smiled at the unbridled boosterism of Carlsbad city officials featured in this year’s State of the City video. He’d be reminded of the self-satisfied city fathers of Zenith, Babbit’s fictional Midwestern hometown. But Carlsbad residents were shortchanged if they expected to get more than a virtual pep rally from their city’s annual report. [click to continue…]
The Encinitas-based private school will move into the 16-classroom space in the next couple of months, and is projected to pay $1,300 a month [per classroom] over the three-year lease agreement, which will total to approximately $250,000.
Sounds like a pretty good deal for the Waldorf School and for Magnolia. Obviously, none of the Sanderlin parents have attempted to drop their kids off at Magnolia school on a rainy day. They’ll learn the hard way.
On Saturday, August 25, 2012 the Flying Elephant Pub and Grill are presenting their second annual Cadillac Kings Car Show.
There will be live music, cars on display, and a bikini contest hosted by Yours Truly Bikinis. We would love to have you come by to check out the event!
Awards will be given for best bike, best custom, best lowrider, best Cadillac, and best rat rod. If you know what any of this means, then you will not want to miss it. Think there’ll be ink?
