I want to get the proverbial ball rolling early in Carlsbad for a massive, citywide Christmas-slash-“holiday” celebration centered on the beloved village.
I know December is a long way off. And I realize there are other, much bigger issues of civic concern, including building a long-promised pool complex, unraveling the Village H disaster, and reining in those overblown public-employee benefits.
But can’t we all take a little time out and stage something truly memorable? We’ ve already dropped the ball completely with the Fourth of July. Carlsbad has no parade and no public fireworks display. The closest thing we’ve got is fireworks at Legoland, and the citizens of Carlsbad are so hungry for something, anything even remotely celebratory, that each year they crowd into the business parks west of Legoland to watch the 10-minute show, creating a huge traffic jam.

Santa Claus arrived safely in Carlsbadistan Sunday, December 7, 2008 at the annual Rotary Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at The Shops at Village Faire. The crowds turned out, and the festivities got underway at 2 pm with Santa’s arrival. It was an afternoon of free cider, cookies, and a Christmas card craft station for the hundreds of kids who showed up with their parents on the blustery day.
While Santa posted up with a few Rotary Elves in front of the tree for photographs with the kids, the festivities got underway on the makeshift stage in the parking lot in front of The UPS Store. The singing and dancing went strong almost all afternoon, and didn’t wind down until after the 4:30 dance performance from Carlsbad High School’s junior varsity Xcalibur and varsity Lancer Dancer squads.
Once the girls were off the pavement, the pop-up tents came down, and the tree lights went on. And, that, was the end of the festivities for 2008. (Follow the jump for all the photos.)

The Carlsbad Fire Department’s classic fire truck had a special passenger this afternoon as hundreds of kids and their parents gathered for the annual Carlsbad Rotary Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony at the Village Faire in the heart of Carlsbadistan. And who was this special rider? It was Santa Claus.
Tree-lighting guests were treated to free hot apple cider, coffee and cookies, as well as a Christmas card making station for the kids. Santa actually allowed strangers to sit on his lap while elves snapped Polaroid pictures for the kids.
Before Mayor Bud Lewis officially lit the tree, the crowd enjoyed a girls choir from St. Patricks as well as several large groups of dancers including Jazzersize, Irish traditional dancing, and the ubiquitous Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers.
We got cold and left before hearing the Mayor’s words to kick off the season, but we’re going to guess that they were wonderfully appropriate.
Jazzercisers jingle bell rocking out.

Hey kids, on Sunday afternoon December 7, 2008 Santa Claus is coming to town, but he won’t be in overweight sleigh pulled by countless raindeer. No. He will be riding on the back of an antique Carlsbadistan fire engine. Join Santa and his elves at The Shops at Village Faire at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Blvd.
There will be crafts, snacks, singing, dancing, and the annual Rotary Christmas tree lighting ceremony officiated by Mayor Bud Lewis. Click here for all the pictures and video from last year’s event.
