The Running Of The Keebler Kids Mile

by The Editors on January 19, 2008

Keebler

This morning at 8 AM more than 2,500 of Carlsbadistan’s youngest runners (aged 3 through 12) busted off the starting line in the Keebler Kids Marathon Mile at Legoland. The one-mile loop through the Legoland park as part of the weekend-long festivities of the Carlsbad Marathon. Everyone who participated got a gold medal.

Though we do not condone the seedy, underground, baby-racing scene, there was also a “diaper dash” for babies who still travel on all fours. For more on the weekend activities surrounding the Carlsbad Marathon click the link.

Tri-City Launches New Accessible Icon

by The Editors on March 10, 2014

Image001-6Apparently, the wheelchair crew didn’t like the old accessibility logo that showed a stick man sitting back, lax, in an old-school wheelchair. With all the challenged athletes out there rolling marathons, racing on mountain bike courses, and doing all the things everyone else does, the crew at the Accessible Icon Project decided it was time to update that old, 1968 style logo with a new one that better represented the way people use wheelchairs these days.

The staff at Tri-City Medical Center decided they agreed and became the first facility in the state of California to update all their signage.

“The old symbol no longer accurately depicts the extraordinary people in our community who use wheelchairs,” said Casey Fatch, interim CEO of Tri-City Medical Center. “This new icon is the future – and we thought it was up to the medical community to lead on this issue. This new icon reflects Tri-City’s commitment to treating our patients with caring, dignity, kindness and respect.”

Michellie Jones’ Ironman Hopes Dashed

by The Editors on September 24, 2008

W-Win-CrpCarlsbadistan’s best hope for the Ironman World Championship Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on October 11, 2008 has withdrawn from the competition after “suffering a slight tear in her right calf” on Sunday, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Jones, winner of the 2006 Ironman Hawaii, suffered the injury while running the half marathon at the Ironman 70.3 Cancun (Mexico). Jones had recorded the race’s fastest 56-mile bike split. . . . “One of the things that I learned from my disastrous defense of my Ironman World Championship title last year in Kona is that the Hawaiian Ironman is not a place to be unless you are 100 percent,” Jones said in a statement. “I am really looking forward to coming back to Kona in 2009 with a vengeance. I am extremely disappointed.”

We’re bummed for Michellie and for triathlon fans everywhere.

Run Babbitt Run Like a Hound Dog

by The Editors on June 3, 2007

Top Left

According to North County Times sports columnist Steve Scholfield, Bob Babbit, co-founder and publisher of Competitor Magazine is running today’s San Diego’s Rock n’ Roll Marathon (his 10th) dressed as Elvis (with the Running Elvi).

While we care very little about running or Elvis, it is a nice way to mention the Rock n’ Roll Marathon and a long-time Carlsbad resident who has built a Solana Beach-based media empire around sweaty, lycra-clad, mid-life crisis suffering body jocks. From the swarms of them we saw downtown San Diego last night sporting “I survived the [insert endurance race here] and all I got was this t-shirt” shirts, we’d have to say Mr. Babbit’s business will see no soon end.
