Man Shot And Killed Near Pine Park

by The Editors on April 5, 2009

Last night, (Saturday April 4, 2009) around 8 PM neighbors called police to say that they had heard four gun shots near the corner of Madison Street Near Chestnut, according to a story in the North County Times. When police arrived they found Juan Carlos Balderas, 21, of Encinitas laying in a vacant lot with at least one gun shot wound.

Paramedics tried to revive Balderas. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. . . Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain said witnesses told officers the victim appeared to have been chased just before the shooting. There were conflicting statements about what direction the people involved in the incident had been running. . . Police taped off a large crime scene in the area immediately west of Chase Field at Pine Avenue Park. May said officers were searching the area for the shooter or shooters, but were unsure who they were looking for.

Oddly, this is almost the exact same spot that a police chase ended in a collision on March 11, 2009. Police said it was unknown if the shooting was gang related.
