by The Editors on November 4, 2008

Election1108 3

Neighbors Come To Blows Over Prop 8

by The Editors on November 4, 2008

A 76-year-old man and his 77-year-old wife were beaten by a 53-year-old neighbor last night in a fight that started over a Prop 8 election signage, according to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune.

The resident of Sandcastle Drive was jailed on suspicion of elder abuse and battery causing great bodily injury, police Lt. Neil Gallucci said.

The dispute allegedly began when the neighbor placed a No on 8 sign in front a Yes on 8 sign the couple had placed on their lawn. The couple confronted the neighbor and that’s when the younger man reportedly struck the other couple in the “face and head.”

Callaway Downgraded To Sell

by The Editors on November 4, 2008

Wedbush Morgan Securities recently lowered their opinion of Callaway Golf from “hold” to “sell” with a target of $8.

We believe 2009 results could fall meaningfully below current Street consensus forecasts.

And that’s why Barron’s said, “Callaway Swinging The Blues.”

Carlsbad Street Fair: Fall 2008

by The Editors on November 2, 2008

Stfair1108B

Don’t know what it was about the Carlsbadistan Street Faire, but today we actually had fun. The streets were packed, the sun was out, then it rained to cool things off a little, and then the sun came back out again.

Sure, many of the booths were stacked full of junk we wouldn’t even haul to the Goodwill, but it was so good seeing the streets filled with smiling faces that not even a fire-and-brimstone street preacher could bring us down.

We didn’t count, but it looked a lot like the biggest and best Street Faire ever. Follow the jump for all the photos.

Crime Rate Hits 10-Year Low But Wait

by The Editors on November 2, 2008

According to a report released this week by the San Diego Association of Governments, crime in North County is on the run. Violent crime in Carlsbadistan is down 46 percent and property crime was down 6 percent, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The agency found that property crime across the county dropped in the first half of 2008 compared with the same period last year. Most North County cities mirrored the regional crime trends.

But just wait. With all the hard economic times experts say crime is bound to rebound.

Carlsbad Police Department spokeswoman Lynn Diamond said she was worried that people would become complacent about locking doors and windows because of the region’s continued drop in crime. She agreed with SANDAG that the poor economy could cause an increase in crime.

So remember: lock your doors. There are going to be some desperate holiday shoppers this season.

Legoland Aquarium Closing For Remodel

by The Editors on November 1, 2008

H Feature

The Sea Life Aquarium that just opened at Carlsbad’s Legoland on August 11, 2008 is shutting down on November 11, 2008 and will remain closed until December 26, 2008 while the park “updates” the attraction.

Modifications being made to the Aquarium include adding an interactive LEGO sand castle building area; enhancing the LEGO animation in the Lost City of Atlantis display; adding décor to the Lake Tahoe area; remodeling the front and Park-side SEA LIFE entrances; and improvements to the interactive audio/visual technologies currently being used throughout the Aquarium.

Sounds like someone didn’t get this project done right the first time.

Halloween Far From Dead On Sycamore

by The Editors on October 31, 2008

Thema Eve

Best Halloween street in The Neighborhood goes to Sycamore Street between Carlsbad Blvd. and Garfield with two huge, scary All Hallows Eve set-ups. Thelma and Evelyn (pictured above) said Sycamore had the best Cosmos in Carlsbad. Though we don’t know if they can be trusted. They only had one walker between them.

The biggest display was at Brian French and Jenny Mahoney’s house on the North side of Sycamore. It included a walk-through tunnel with huge Halloween dioramas filled with all kinds of creatures of the night. When someone asked Jenny if she was done building out her display she quickly answered, “No way. Never.”

And that’s great news for next year.

Callaway Loses $7.4 million In The Third

by The Editors on October 30, 2008

CallawayCarlsbadistan’s big bertha of golf may want to spin their numbers all kinds of ways, but in the end Callaway Golf lost $7.4 million in the third quarter on $213.5 million in net sales. The loss, however, was a penny ahead of the street so it’s not all bad news. Plus. . .

The initial feedback on our new 2009 products has been very positive, and we feel the whole product line is stronger than our record 2007 line,” George Fellows, Callaway’s president and chief executive, said in a statement.

Well, at least they’ve got that going for them.

With only five days to go until election day we thought it was finally time to see who Carlsbadistan readers are going to elect to the Carlsbad City Council next Tuesday. We’re all going to vote for two candidates in the election, but for this poll we’re asking you to vote for the person you’d most like to see win.

The poll is located in the far right column just below the Recent Comments section. We’re not going to run this poll as long as we did the last one, so vote now while you have the chance.

Carlsbadistan Poll Results #5

by The Editors on October 30, 2008

Poll 5We had a little running battle with Marc Farrar, the vice president of public affairs for TWC’s San Diego Division about what we called “sucky service” from the cable giant. He then posted a request that we remove a Time Warner Cable logo that we altered as a parody. We didn’t remove it.

To make sure that our complaints weren’t just personal, we decided to ask our readers to complete the following sentence: Time Warner Cable is. . . and below is how you answered:

  1. . . .Terrible, but it’s my only choice (46%)
  2. . . . So bad I switched to Dish/Direct TV/AT&T (31%)
  3. . . . All good. I couldn’t be happier (15%)
  4. . . . Fine as long as you don’t need On Demand (8%)

Evidently, the majority of the people (77 percent) seriously dislike the service they get from Time Warner Cable. And we agree. That’s why we cancelled our service months ago.
