Yesterday morning (July 12, 2007) at approximately 11 AM a man in his mid-thirties, described as stocky, white, with dark hair and a mustache walked up to a teller at the Bank of America on Carlsbad Village Drive and demanded cash. So far authorities have not reported how much money was taken. The man’s resemblance to cartoon character Elmer Fudd is apparently coincidental.
He had a stocky build, and was between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall. He was wearing a green camouflage-style baseball cap with a yellow emblem; a blue, short-sleeved, button-down, collared shirt over a white, long-sleeved T-shirt; and glasses.
Oddly, this is the second Carlsbad bank robbery since we started keeping track. Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at (858) 565-1255 or the Carlsbad Police Department at (760) 931-2197.

New York City’s The Village Voice says that Plena Libre is “the biggest band to play plena, which is a folkloric music out of Puerto Rico, Plena Libre know the tradition but aren’t afraid to draw upon stuff from outside the genre to keep it fresh.”
We’ll all get to see for ourselves when the 13-member, four-time Grammy nominee band plays the final Stagecoach Park stop of Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in the Parks from 6-8 PM on Friday July 13. The band’s eclectic mix of of latin beats will certainly get the park dancing.
Combining a swinging rhythm section, horns and vocals, Plena Libre’s music has been given new light and patterns with contemporary dance floor styles such as songo, samba, reggae, salsa and pambiche.

In May Legoland Carlsbad set a world record for the tallest Lego tower ever built. It was the 94.3 ft-high mast of a pirate ship.
Now, visitors to the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto Canada (August 17 to September 3) are attempting to break Carlsbad’s record by building at tower that is taller. Construction begins Friday August 17 at 10 AM.
This means there is still over a month for sabotage. Legoland? Are we going to just let this happen? We’ll come over and throw a couple more bricks on the top if that’s what it takes, because world records are important in Carlsbadistan.

The firemen at Carlsbad’s Station 1 have decided that it’s time to bring their health and physical fitness to the forefront and start living right. That’s why they’ve been working with Carlsbad personal trainer Jennifer Ashley. Since Jennifer’s arrival things have improved vastly.
In just more than a month, one firefighter has lost 20 pounds, while another has lost 15 pounds. According to Danny Glessar, a 43-year-old fire engineer, the biggest change has been in his energy levels. “I was tired all the time. I have two small children at home, and I work at a busy firehouse where we are woken up regularly. You’re pretty exhausted by the end of the week,” said Glessar, who has lost six pounds.
According to the story in The Coast News, Ashley hopes to work with all the firemen in Carlsbad.
“It’s reaffirms to me that I’m doing the right thing with my life,” she said. “I’m changing lives and helping so many people just by sharing my education with them.”

A group of Carlsbad Village business people have formed an organization to help guide the development of Carlsbad’s downtown area it’s called the Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership.
We have all the potential, being two blocks from the beach, to become a Carmel, Laguna Beach or Newport Beach — to be that kind of upscale beach community. We just need to have the vision and the people to make that happen,” said Jodi Dickson, owner of the Poached Pear and a member of a working group appointed to lay the foundation for the new organization.
We’re not all that interested in Carlsbad becoming Newport or Laguna Beach, but hey, anything to stem the flow of junk shops in the downtown is fine with us.

Most of the time we’re quite happy linking out to other media sites for coverage, however, occasionally we’re bummed when we miss covering an event in person. The Grand Opening of Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill, at Tamarack and I-5 is one we should have attended. Luckily for us Amanda Branam and photographer Sean DuFrene of Todayslocalnews.com covered all the goodness as former Flogging Molly accordionist Matt Hensley celebrated with friends and family. It looks like the pro skateboarder is finally settling down.
“I’ve always made a living doing odd things. I made a living skateboarding and playing accordion. I still play accordion, and now I own a pub,” said Hensley, who celebrated the grand opening of Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill yesterday in Carlsbad. “Owning this pub is probably the most legitimate thing I’ve done in my life. Or the most common thing.”
