Carlsbadistan’s grand daddy of drag racers, Ron Capps, returns to Pacific Raceways in Seattle, Washington for the NHRA Northwest Nationals and the site of his first professional NHRA win, according to a story on The Auto Channel.
Since then, he has won 29 titles in the Funny Car class, including his 1998 triumph in Seattle. He was also runner-up at the NHRA Northwest Nationals in 2001, 2006 and 2008, and No. 1 qualifier in 1997. So, it’s safe to say that Seattle is a favorite venue for the California native who drives the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger Funny Car in the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Watch Ron this weekend on ESPN2 at 7 PM Saturday and 8:30 PM Sunday. Finals on ESPN3 Sunday at 4 PM.

A crew of budding artists shows off their work after a week at the Carlsbad Art Farm, according to a post on the school’s blog.
During the week, students learn to sketch animals; color mix using a limited pallet; how to block in their subject for a painting; a little about animal anatomy, and then use the colors they create on their own pallet to render their subject (in this case: a bunny, chickens and a mouse on a wheel). These students will be entering Grade 4 this fall.
The Art Farm Summer Camps are open to students entering Grades 2-8 in the fall of 2010 and run either mornings or afternoons beginning each Monday. Sign up now as there is still spots open. For more information click the link.

If Carlsbadistan were ever to name the kings of TGIF Jazz In The Park it would no doubt crown Warren Lovell’s Big Time Operator. This big beat, jazz, lounge band has played 11 of the 25 and on Friday July 9, 2010 they’re going to be swingin’ up Stagecoach Park again with their big band sound.
Led by singer Warren Lovell, this ten piece band has the class and excitement to make your event memorable. . . Big Time Operator excels at playing classic big band arrangements, latin arrangements, and impressive original songs. They are true to the past and yet completely contemporary Entertainers Extraordinaire!

Are organizers planning for some serious stragglers in this year’s Carlsbadistan Triathlon, or did someone at the sign shop just mess up a little? We’re guessing the latter.

The people in dark masks, hooded sweatshirts “claimed to be armed” while robbing the Carlsbad Citi bank at 1810 Marron Rd. on Thursday, July 1, 2010, according to a story in The Coast News.
Carlsbad Police responded to the scene and located a vehicle, abandoned with the motor still running, behind the Marshall’s Store, which is located in the same shopping center. It was discovered that this vehicle had been reported as stolen from the Los Angeles area. The surrounding area was searched by a police K-9 and other officers, however the suspects were not located.
We haven’t had a bank robbery since March and it was at the same bank. In fact, the Citibank on Marron Rd has been robbed at least three times in the past three years. Seems to be a favorite with the bad guys.

We’ve been hearing rumors that there may be some unofficial fireworks going off near the beach come July 4. We’ve seen them before and they were insanely professional. Carlsbadistan’s finest, however, seem to frown on those festivities. That’s why this year we’re going to watch the Red, White, & Boom fireworks at Legoland first.
The Legoland fireworks show is going down at 8:30 PM, July 4, 2010. The best place to view them is from the lower parking lot at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. Trust us, you really don’t want to get any closer than that.

When Carlsbadistan’s terrible June Gloom rolls right into July and it starts to get you down just remember–it’s not cloudy everywhere, it’s just cloudy here we live. . . really, really cloudy and dark. Out in Vista it’s blue sky summer. But, you know, it’s still Vista.

We have to admit that much of Carlsbadistan’s TGIF Jazz in the Park is deja vu all over again. (This is probably the second or third time we’ve said that, too.) But with Friday’s (July 2, 2010) concert by Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca it kind of makes sense.
When Lemvo takes the stage at Stagecoach Park he will be playing Jazz in the Park for the fourth time. And that tells us a couple things: One, Carlsbadistan loves Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca, and more importantly Lemvo apparently loves Carlsbadistan as well.
For those who’ve missed it here’s the short version:
Lemvo is a Congo-born artist of Angolan ancestry who is “the embodiment of the Afro-Latin Diaspora which connects back to Mother Africa via the Cuban clave rhythm. Lemvo is truly multi-cultural and equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo. . . Since forming his Los Angeles-based band Makina Loca in 1990, Lemvo has refined his craft and vision, raising his joyous voice with strength, singing songs that celebrate life, and most importantly, inspiring his audiences to let loose and dance away their worries.
We’ve probably said this before, too, but if you’re only going to attend one Jazz in the Park this summer, it should probably be this one.

California State epidemiologists explained to a large group of concerned citizen at Carlsbad’s Sheraton Resort on Monday night June 28, 2010 that there is a difference between lots of cancer and a “cancer cluster.”
According to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune the researchers studied 8,000 cases of cancer in Carlsbad between 1996 and 2008 and found that while there were higher than average instances of melanoma and cancer in adult women, but there was nothing to suggest a cluster.
“When we dig deeper we don’t see anything underlying these numbers and pointing a finger at anything specific,” Dr. Margaret McCusker said. . . .Epidemiologists also considered 323 cases that a community survey turned up, Lyman said. Health officials couldn’t verify about half of those cases and the rest did not add up to enough cases to affect their results. . . . Studies in 2007 and 2008 also found nothing unusual about the incidences or types of cancer in the area, but community members want more up-to-date information.
While it is good news, it doesn’t do much to answer the questions of parents who have lost children to cancer in Carlsbad. For more information visit the City of Carlsbad’s Cancer information page here.
