Carlsbad’s New High School: Two Lawsuits Down

by The Editors on October 17, 2009

Hs CannonSome things seem really obvious to us. Carlsbadistan’s needs are pretty simple. We need a public pool, a proper skatepark, and a new high school. But it is crazy how many people seem to get in the way.

Take the new $100 million high school planned for the corner of College and Cannon Road for instance: according to a Bruce Lieberman story in the San Diego Union-Tribune The Carlsbad Unified School District just settled two lawsuit against the school. One with the City of Carlsbad. Yes, the City had sued the school district over “traffic issues associated with the school.” Among other things the school district has agreed to “dedicate a right of way” for the possible extension of Cannon Road and to pay the City $302,000 for improvements to the intersection of El Camino Real and College Boulevard.

In the suit filed by Preserve Calavera the district has agreed to limit the number of parking spaces to fewer than 800, “maximize use of native plants,” and to allow Preserve Calavera to make a presentation to school trustees regarding “teaching gardens.” Yes, people really sue for this sort of thing.

And there’s one more:

A lawsuit by developer Bentley-Wing Properties and Rancho Carlsbad, a nearby homeowners association, claims that the environmental report doesn’t adequately address the high school’s effect on traffic. That suit is not resolved, but school administrators said they were confident it will be settled soon.

All this so the kids of Carlsbadistan can go to school without having to sit in each other laps. We’d like to thank Mark Tanner and the rest of the trustees for soldiering on in the face of all of this.

During the summer the the Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team, The Lancer Dancers, placed first in their home qualifying routine at the Elite UDA Dance Camp held at the University of San Diego. That gives them the opportunity to compete in the UDA National Championships in Orlando, Florida February 5-7, 2009. Now they just have to raise the money to get the entire team there. But they have an idea. . .

The Lancer Dancers are teaching dance classes for children in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade at CHS. . . The Kid’s Classes will begin September 23rd for and run for 10 weeks. Dance students will learn dances, technique, and have a chance to perform at the Lancer Dancer Showcase in December at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Center as a “Jr. Lancer Dancer.”

Some Pacific Ridge Students Home From China

by The Editors on June 20, 2009

Rick, Stephanie, Juliana, Richie, and Shari Sapp can’t hide the smiles after being reunited.

All 15-year-old Stephanie Stapp (second from left) really wanted after being greeted by her family was some home cooked food. “Tacos sound so good. Mexican food,” she said wistfully between rounds of questions from reporters.

Stephanie, whose father Rick Sapp is the chairman of the board of the Pacific Ridge School, was among the ten students and two teachers who arrived home to the school’s Carlsbad campus tonight around 7:30 PM as part of the first wave of students returning home after their entire school trip had been quarantined in Yichang, China for the H1N1 virus. Three of these returning students had been in the hospital.

062009 9AThe trip was scheduled for 13 days, however it went a little overtime when several of the students fell ill during a river cruise to the Three Gorges Dam.

After those illnesses were reported to the Chinese government the entire group of 35 students and seven faculty were quarantined in the city of Yichang, China.

“We were five days later than we should have been,” Stephanie explained to reporters. “We got to see Shanghai for one day, but we didn’t end up doing the home stays.”

More students will be arriving at the school tonight a little after midnight, and five others who tested positive for Swine Flu earlier this month are still in the hospital in Yichang, China. According to student John Ballif, 15, some of those may be home as early as next week.

Seven Of Quarantined Test Positive For H1N1

by The Editors on June 15, 2009

061509 70CrpAt an afternoon press conference June 15, 2009 at 2:30 PM at Carlsbad’s Pacific Ridge School Dr. Eileen Mullady, the Head of the School, (pictured right) and Rick Sapp, Chair of the school’s Board of Trustees, gave reporters an update on the 35 students and seven faculty members who are currently being held in swine flu quarantine in Yichang, China after several students and teacher got sick during their 13-day educational tour:

Since the evaluations on June 11, we have nine students and two teachers currently in a hospital in the city of Yichang undergoing further evaluation. Our remaining 26 students and five teachers are quarantined in a nearby hotel. We have been told that seven people [six students and one teacher] have tested positive for H1N1 on the initial screenings and they are recovering. Our teachers have informed us that in the last 24 hours, there have been no additional confirmed cases of H1N1 in our group.

Unfortunately, Mullady did not know when the students and teachers would return home. “We could have students out of quarantine by the end of the week.”

David Arganda In The Union-Tribune

by The Editors on June 11, 2009

David ArgandaCarlsbad High School’s David Arganda won the Western Surfing Association championships in the under-18 longboarding division last month and now, The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Matt Arnold has profiled the ripper in the newspaper.

Getting to know David is like earning a Ph.D. in surf-speak. Weather is not sunny but instead “trunkable,” or warm enough to surf in swim trunks. He almost exclusively watches movies that are about surfing, his favorite being “Another State of Mind.” . . David said his preparation for surfing involves listening to indie rock such as Vampire Weekend and flirting with high school girls.”

Carlsbad Student Aces ACT

by The Editors on April 17, 2009

Z8D2B2027223B688588257599007F885B.JpgDaniel Ng, 17, of Carlsbadistan just got a perfect score on the American College Test (ACT) and that’s something only 46 students in the nation have done, according to a story in the North County Times.

Only one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the test end up with a top score of 36, said Nancy Owen, spokeswoman for the company that administers the American College Test, better known as the ACT. The four-hour test has 215 questions that cover four subjects: English, math, science and reading.

Currently, Daniel says he wants to be a doctor, but we’re thinking the La Costa Canyon High School student can pretty much be whatever he wants.
