by The Editors on March 18, 2008

SquireFrom the North County Times:

Jodian Squire has touched a lot of lives, and now teachers and parents at the Carlsbad Country Day School are turning out to touch hers.

After trying for months to find out why she was feeling pain in her chest, Squire, 35, was diagnosed in October with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, said school director Melissa Reed.

Teachers are holding a silent auction to raise money to help cover the Squire family’s $30,000 medical bills. For more info on how you can help, call (760) 804-0550.

More Free Parking In the Village

by The Editors on March 14, 2008

The North County Transit District will be adding 130 parking spaces to the lot at the Village train station according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.

Construction work should be done by mid-April, giving regular Coaster train commuters a little welcome relief before the busy summer season arrives, transit district spokesman Tom Kelleher said Thursday. The parking project is expected to cost $203,900.

More parking is good, but a lot more parking would be better.

Could La Costa Have Saved Elliot Spitzer?

by The Editors on March 14, 2008

Lacosta RubIn his March 14, 2008 Los Angeles Times column Joel Stein, like all of us lately, is trying to figure out what would motivate New York Governor Elliot Spitzer to spend up to $80,000 on high-end adult entertainment, and more importantly, what did he get for his money. Stein brought Carlsbad into the mix by titling it: “Maybe Spitzer just needed time at La Costa.”

In fact, I’m not sure why going to a brothel is illegal but visiting a spa is considered classy. Because, really, a spa is just all the parts of sex that women like: candles, soft music, scented oils, questions about how you feel. How can it be psychologically healthy in a marriage for either partner paying to be touched in pleasurable ways? As a husband, I know I can’t compete with a $100-an-hour shiatsu guy with an iPod full of flute music.

Not sure we’re really following your logic there, Joel. But thanks for mentioning our favorite spa. There’s nothing Carlsbad needs more than shady politicians visiting The La Costa Resort and Spa.

Starbucks Reopens With A Yawn

by The Editors on March 6, 2008

Starbucks-2The Carlsbadistan Starbucks reopened it’s doors at 5 PM on Tuesday March 4, 2008 with little or no fanfare. In fact, we challenge you to see anything different about the place other than the cream and sugar station is now taking up window space on the Coast Highway side.

“There’s a lot less bump and shove going on behind the counter, that’s for sure,” said one barista. “We have a lot more room back here.”

Well, if they have more room behind the counter, maybe that will transform into better, faster coffee that will keep those lines from streaming out the door. Still no AT&T free wireless for Starbucks cardholders, but it’s apparently on the way.

The Carlsbadistan Starbucks Stops Here

by The Editors on February 27, 2008

Starbucks

Not only did every single Starbucks Coffee location in the nation close yesterday at 5:30 PM for employee reprogramming (“When customers arrive at their Starbucks store tomorrow morning, they will be greeted with the following promise: Your drink should be perfect, every time. If not, let us know and we’ll make it right”), but more importantly, our Starbucks is closed for a complete remodel.

And by that we mean, completely ripped up all the way down to the concrete floor. The salty-lookin’ old dudes who normally hang outside in the chairs by the window and give every woman the vertical scan have been replaced by tile cutters and saw-horses.

An inked-up worker who referred to us as “Boss,” said we shouldn’t worry because the place will be re-opened by next “Wednesday or Thursday;” hopefully, with those new AT&T Internet connections that give all pre-paid Starbucks card users two free hours of wireless a day. We’ll see.

Arnold Visits Invitrogen

by The Editors on February 12, 2008

20 44 992 10 08Our favorite Carlsbadistan biotech firm Invitrogen got a visit from the Governator yesterday as he rolled through Galeeforneea in support of the State’s biotech industry, according to a story in the North County Times.

Schwarzenegger pointed to Invitrogen and other biotech companies as a source of strength in California’s economy, and said he favored further investment in biotech. With California’s economy showing weakness, the governor said, industries like biotech deserve government support.

“The action is where you are. This is where the jobs are being created,” Schwarzenegger said.

Wonder if he visited any of his favorite Indian casinos while he was here?

Carlsbad Terrier Gets Award At Westminster

by The Editors on February 12, 2008

From the San Diego Union-Tribune:

Four dogs from San Diego County competed at Westminster Monday, and none advanced past the breed judging. But Nicole, a soft-coated Wheaten terrier from Carlsbad, received an Award of Merit, a coveted consolation prize. . . Nicole is a 2-year-old Wheaten terrier co-owned by Barbara Zapf. “She’s a very special dog, with a wonderful personality,” Zapf said. The dog has been on the East Coast training with a professional handler since mid-November.

Doggone it, we wanted Nicole to win Best of Show.
