Poseidon Get’s $530 Million In Bonds

by The Editors on January 28, 2010

Poseidon Resources Corp, the company that plans to build the desalination plant on the Agua Hedionda lagoon say they were just approved for $530 million in tax exempt bonds from the State of California, according to a story in the North County Times.

The Private Activity Bonds were approved by the California Debt Limitation Allocation Committee. These bonds are used to finance private projects judged to benefit the public. . . Peter MacLaggan, Poseidon’s senior vice president, said in a statement that the bonds’ tax-exempt status means they can sell for a lower interest rate than taxable bonds, lowering the cost of the desalinated water to the buyers.

Isn’t it nice when the Government helps private business?

Man Runs With Engagement Ring

by The Editors on January 28, 2010

When man at Zales Jewelers in the Carlsbad Premium Outlet Mall asked to see an engagement ring on Wednesday, January 28, 2010 he had a little more than a proposal on his mind, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

A man . . . grabbed one of them and ran, Carlsbad police said. . . The robber took the ring from Zales Jewelers in the Carlsbad Premium Outlets mall, on Paseo Del Norte near Palomar Airport Road, after an employee removed the item from a display case for closer inspection, police said.

The man was described as “black, in his early 20s, about 6 feet five inches tall and well-dressed.” He was seen jumping into the passenger side of a silver compact sedan. There’s a marriage that starting off on the wrong foot. . .

Wolf Design Build Rethinks The Powerplant

by The Editors on January 26, 2010

Frontwork-Copy

Wolfram Kalber has big ideas for Carlsbadistan. And he’s not one who simply dreams things up and lets them sit. Through his company Wolf Design Build he has designed and built homes in many different styles, but they all feature a creative groove that makes them quite unlike anything that’s been done before.

Kalber’s most recent work in Carlsbadistan is the $17 million Kiko Beach House on Ocean St. which we last featured in our 12 Days of Carlsbadistan Christmas. Now, Kalber and David Evans have some ideas for the Encina Power Station property. It’s called The Peoples Sunset Terrace Pavillion & Amphitheater. The structure which houses a Carlsbad Cultural Center and Recreation Center, looks somewhat like Denver’s DIA airport.

Kalber says he is meeting with the Mayor to discuss this and another design for the triangle lawn at Offshore, but we’re guessing this will fly well over Mayor Lewis’ head. Everything else aside, it’s good to know someone is thinking way, way outside the box when it comes to Carlsbadistan’s future.

Village Faire’s Dog Mania Is Doggone

by The Editors on January 26, 2010

Dog Mania, the store that carried high-end fashions, treats, and toys for pets (like Harry Barker Tennis Balls), packed up their doggie biscuits on January 17, 2010 and left the Carlsbad Village Faire. Calls to their phone number ended in a disconnected line.

The location, which is nearly invisible to passing traffic, has been home to several failed businesses over the past four years (Sonoma Valley Market). Wonder who will be next?

Carlsbadistan Residents Not As Stoked

by The Editors on January 26, 2010

According to a new study commissioned by the City of Carlsbad the “number of Carlsbad residents happy with the job their city is doing dipped slightly last year,” according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.

The number of people who described themselves as confident in their city government declined for the third year straight, Williams said. In 2007, the confidence figure was 79 percent, while in 2009 it came in at 74 percent. . . Williams said he expects Carlsbad residents’ recent dissatisfaction is due in large part to the national economic recession. There’s also “a frustration with government in general,” he said. . . It’s something he has seen in surveys in other California communities of late, he added.

Fine, but we think it’s because the City Council refuses to build a swimming pool and a skateboard park. Just think how happy everyone would be with just two simple additions.

Carlsbadistan Paraplegic To Climb Kilimanjaro

by The Editors on January 26, 2010

Erica DavisIf everything goes well Carlsbadistan’s Erica Davis will be the first paraplegic woman to climb Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro, according to a story on Recordnet.com.

With the help of a specially made wheelchair and a team from the Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiology Institute, which will carry her about 60 percent of the time, Davis hopes Monday to be atop the tallest free-standing mountain in the world – 19,340 feet above sea level. . . “Reaching the top is showing that it doesn’t matter what it is, you can do it, because there are people out there willing and wanting to help you,” Davis said. “I think it will show other challenged athletes that you have two choices. You can lay there on the couch being depressed or look at it as a new chapter in your book of life. It will bring different things to your life. Your life is not over in any way.”

Davis was paralyzed from the waist down in 2005 when she suffered a “cavernous hemangioma.” Since then she’s competed in cycling races, triathlons, and two marathons. We’re pretty confident she’ll summit.

Upper Deck In Court For Counterfeiting

by The Editors on January 18, 2010

UpperdeckCarlsbadistan-based trading card giant The Upper Deck is reportedly going to court on January 26, 2010 for allegedly counterfeiting 60,000 Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards, according to a story in the North County Times.

In 2008, Konami Digital Entertainment, maker of the popular card game, brought a civil suit accusing Upper Deck of copyright infringement and counterfeiting their cards. Several Upper Deck executives refused to testify, but there was still undisputed testimony confirming that the company had manufactured fake cards, a statement from Konami said.

What a wonderful way to negotiate licensing fees. Nice that we tax payers can get involved, huh?
