Just after 5 PM last night a man on a bicycle punched a shopper in the Albertson’s parking lot on Carlsbad Village Drive then rode away with a bag of groceries according to a story in the North County Times.
The robber was described as white, with brown hair, 5 feet 11 inches tall, and in his mid-20s to mid-30s. He was wearing a blue jacket and a beanie at the time of the robbery and he was last seen riding away on his bike with only one shoe, police said.

If a new power plant moves in next door to the surfside smokestack and towering concrete walls of Carlsbad’s Encina Power Station, the city’s prime coastal property will become the poster child for both poor planning and fossil fuel addiction.
Mayor Bud Lewis and his City Council are trying to persuade the California Energy Commission to require the new plant’s site to be moved away from the coast. They want the property to be redeveloped to increase beach and lagoon access. The power plant’s owner, NRG West, says other locations are not feasible because of adverse environmental impacts and technical problems that would diminish the plant’s electrical transmission capacity.
The California Energy Commission will settle the argument with a final decision planned for March.
All three players in this drama appear to agree on two major points: our growing regional population needs a new, fossil-fueled power plant, and the old one cannot be shut down for another seven to 15 years.

According to a story in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Carlsbad couple Melanie and Phil Sheridan (both 35) were thinking about having another child (they already have six year old Tyler shown right) but when Melanie lost her job they decided to hold off for a while.
“People tell me not to let money stop us from having a baby, that everything works itself out in the end,” Melanie said. “That may be true, but right now having another baby feels more like a strain than the blessing it’s supposed to be.”
Apparently, they are not alone. “For three-quarters of a century, economic downturns have triggered declines in the U.S. fertility rate,” the article says. Maybe we don’t need that new high school after all. . .

Hard to believe but Carlsbadistan reportedly has 18,000 fire hydrants and only two crews of two who are responsible for painting them. “We start down here by the Army Navy Academy and we finish up in La Costa,” said Vince, pictured above.
Last time around it took the workers a year and a half to paint them all. This year they’re hoping to get her done by December 2009. Kind of like of our version of the Golden Gate Bridge. . . Thanks, Vince. They look good.

We were pretty hyped when we heard that P.F. Chang’s China Bistro was coming to the new Paseo Carlsbad “retail center” across the street from the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, but now we hear that another restaurant has signed a lease (20 years at $6.98 million): BJ’s Restaurant Brewhouse. Really?
Does Carlsbad really need a loud, chain restaurant that serves beer, pizza, and bar food? Aren’t Pizza Port, Karl Strauss, and that place in the Costco parking lot enough? Hopefully, BJ’s is at the opposite end of the mall from P.F. Chang’s.

The City of Carlsbad has thrown in the towel on plans to help NRG find a different location for their proposed powerplant, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
In a letter to NRG Vice President Tim Hemig, Carlsbad municipal projects manager Joe Garuba wrote: “Carlsbad believes that our coastline is a precious resource and it is not an appropriate location for industrial land uses.” . . . Without NRG’s cooperation, “the city recognizes that its individual efforts (to find an alternative site) are meaningless,” Garuba added. . . A copy of the letter, dated Dec. 1, was sent to the state energy commission.
Seems the industrialization of the lagoon will continue, sadly.
