Each year Carlsbadistan Rotarians gather in the parking lot of the Village Faire at the corner of Carlsbad Blvd and Carlsbad Village Drive to kick off the holiday season with a Christmas Tree Lighting with some help from Santa Claus, Matt Hall, some singers, and the ubiquitous Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers. Because nothing says Christmas like choreographed hip-hop jazz dancing on the asphalt.
Follow the jump for a little more on how the Sunday, December 5, 2010 Christmas Tree lighting went.

On Friday night December 3, 2010 at 7 PM the Smart Brothers will be playing a local flavor concert at Carlsbadistan’s Museum of Making Music.
Jay and Lou Smart are two brothers from California who have been traveling around the country for the past few years living lives full of the sort of strange adventures you’d expect from a couple of vagabond minstrels. It is hardly a surprise, then, that the music of the Smart Brothers wafts distinctly of the open road. The raw energy these lads put into everything they do is palpable…and contagious.
Tickets are $10 and include a slice of Knockout Pizza and a beverage from Stone Brewing Company. Which means attendees will be getting something free depending on how they look at it.
Click here to buy tickets or follow the jump for a video of the Smart Brothers in action.

On Sunday, November 7, 2010 the streets of Carlsbadistan will be packed with visitors as the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce presents the world’s Largest One-Day Street Fair— the fall Carlsbad Village Faire from 8 AM to 4 PM in the heart of the Village.
Closed streets will turn our busy Village into a bustling walking mall of pop-up tents featuring arts, crafts, music, food, and a plethora of fantastically absorbent sponges, spectacular vegetable chopping devices, magical mops, and the occasional epic collection of what can only be described as flea market junk.
For the first time, North County Transit Districts Coaster trains will be running on Sunday specifically to make visiting the street fair easier for everyone in San Diego. In fact, people from Carlsbadistan who are planning on driving to the street fair should seriously consider parking at the Poinsettia Coaster Station and riding into the Village the train. It’s also a great option for anyone planning to spend their day in the beer garden.

The 28th Annual Carlsbad Oktoberfest was presented by the Rotary Clubs of Carlsbad on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Holiday Park in Carlsbadistan. Aside from the traditional German fare, this year’s festivities also included a family friendly element with a pumpkin patch and pumpkin decorating contest, inflatable jump-houses, and an antique fire-engine for the kids.
Bands rotated on the stage in the gazebo throughout the day, but the lederhosen-clad headliners Roger and The Villagers didn’t take the stage until the early evening. Once they did the oom-pahs of “Eins, Zwei, G’Suffa” and the Chicken Dance could be heard across Holiday Park.
But who’s kidding who, Oktoberfest is really about getting sloshed in a public park with family and friends and as one Oktoberfest attendee pointed out, “The chicken dance was good, but the Beck’s Oktoberfest beer was even better.”
Follow the jump for the rest of the story and more photos.

Carlsbadistan’s New Village Arts Theatre will kick off the first musical they’ve ever produced when Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods directed James Vasquez opens Saturday, September 25, 2010.
Once Upon a Time… a baker and his wife embark on a quest into the woods, to fulfill the witch next door’s request and lift a curse that has kept them from having a child. Along the way, they meet Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), Cinderella, two handsome princes and a motley assortment of other characters, all on quests of their own. Stephen Sondheim’s enormously popular musical answers the question of what really happens after “happily ever after” and includes some of the most beautiful songs in the musical theatre canon, including “Giants in the Sky”, “Children Will Listen” and “No One Is Alone.”
A cocktail party with the director and the cast will be held directly following the opening show. Click here to buy tickets online or for more information click the link.

The weekend the Village of Carlsbadistan plays host to the 7th Annual Carlsbad Music Festival celebrating what’s commonly called “contemporary classical music.” This year attendees will be treated to the music of pianist Eric Huebner, the Calder Quartet, and ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble).
The festival begins Friday September 24, 2010 at 5:45 PM with the Village Music Walk.
The Village Music Walk kicks off at the Carlsbad Village Train Station with a site-specific performance by the acclaimed percussion group Red Fish Blue Fish followed by a series of performances by Festival and local musicians at venues including cafes, galleries and record stores across the Village. All of the venues are within a 3-minute walk of each other and audience members can create their own music experience by choosing which events to attend. This is a rare opportunity to hear the world-class musicians of the Carlsbad Music Festival in incredibly intimate venues.

Thanks to the charismatic leadership of music teacher Katie Browne, the Aviara Middle School Band in Carlsbad added 90 beginning music students to its roster this year. The school is scrambling to provide instruments for all those eager students. It will try to use Booster Club funds to purchase instruments, but is concerned that this will take away from the scholarships that it provides for uniforms and materials for students with financial hardship. Mrs. Browne is asking for donations of used band instruments to help get those ninety enthusiastic band geeks playing!
To make a donation please contact Bridget Smith at familyadventureguidebooks-at-gmail.com. Of course monetary donations are also welcome, since some kids are dreaming of playing the less readily available instruments like the oboe or the soprano sax.
Carlsbad is always a generous community and middle school as well all know is not an easy time of life. Let’s show these budding musicians some support!
