On the weekend of September 22-23, 2007 Carlsbad’s Armada Drive will be closed to traffic and then covered in chalk drawings, lined with booths, and filled with art afficionados as Art Spash returns for it’s 5th year.
ArtSplash … is a FREE, two-day, non-profit, family event that promotes and benefits arts within the community. ArtSplash is a community-wide partnership of organizations and businesses working together to establish an Annual Family Event showcasing North County.
Art Splash features chalk drawings, live art performances, musicians, street entertainers and great food in the form the concurrently running 11th Annual Taste of Carlsbad. And trust us, Art Splash is a lot cooler than its event logo logo would suggest. Don’t miss it.
Tom Delonge, the former member of Blink 182 and musical mind behind Angels & Airwaves, has a new album coming out on October 23. According to Ultimateguitar.com the new grouping of songs titled I: Empire was recorded right here in Carlsbad at the MacBeth Footwear offices. Not that this is news to any fans of the band.
What do you get when you mix the chugging rhythms of Jamaica, the energy and emotion of American Motown, and the overthe-top pub/rock of the Pogues? Now in their 14th year, Deal’s Gone Bad is touring extensively with its strongest and most consistent line-up in its history. With elements of ska, rocksteady, reggae, and American soul, DGB is sure to please on the dancefloor as well as on their fourth release to date, “The Ramblers” on Megalith and Jump Up! Records (March, 2007).
Sounds like a show no one should miss. Follow the link for more info on the tour and the band. [click to continue…]
Those who have put Jazz In The Park off all summer get one last chance to make it happen this Friday night August 24 as Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers bring their own brand of Southern California blues to the lovely Calavera Hills Park at 2997 Glasgow Drive.
According to an old saying, when you’re on top, there’s nowhere to go but down. However, Rod Piazza, one of the nation’s top blues performers and multi-winning Handy Award winner as best blues harp, remain at the top of his game and continue to look for ways to climb.
If you miss this one, you won’t get another change until summer 2008.
After a short two-gig stop in the heart of CarlsbadistanTGIF Jazz in the Park is wading back into the suburbs and the cool, breezy beauty of Calavera Hills Park at 2997 Glasgow Drive with the hard-driving blues craftsmanship of the Bill Magee Blues Band. A review on Bill’s website sums it up pretty well.
For those few of you who haven’t had a Bill Magee experience, don’t hesitate to get out there and see this band! This group delivers some of the finest blues you’ll ever hear and it was enough to get music fans of all ages dancing and air guitaring.
We’ve also heard rumors that back in the day Bill (known as Willie then) used to play with a guitarist named Jimmy James. . . Purple Haze indeed. The show starts at 6 PM. Bring a picnic dinner and your dancin’ shoes.
Tonight enjoy the mellow warm sounds of the Hawaiian Islands in an authentic Irish pub as Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill (where Tamarack meets The 5) presents The Cheap Leis featuring former pro skater Adrian Demain, San Diego music and action sports industry icon O (the power pop genius behind the bands Olivelawn, Fluf, and Reeve Oliver), and a couple other hitters you may recognize.
There is no reason to miss this show. If you haven’t seen the Cheap Leis, watch this clip and you’ll get a little idea of what will be going down tonight. And, if you’re lucky you’ll get to hear their cover of The Misfits “I Turned Into A Martian” sung as “I Turned Into a Tahitian.”
Show us a sunny, blue-sky evening in Carlsbadistan and we’ll show you winter. We don’t know if it was the overcast ummer skies, the second week in this venue, or the smooth jazz stylings of Elliot Caine and his horn, but tonight in the Pine Avenue Park things were perfectly snoozy. The crowd was happy, yet subdued, and the only place with much action was in the play structures on stage left where all our kids were jamming.
It’s nice when TGIF Jazz in the Park comes to Carlsbadistan. Gone are the suburban Stagecoach Park crowds, the parking hassles, and instead real Carlsbad out for an evening of cool jazz in the park. . . even if the sky was clouded over. Follow the link for the rest of the photos.
We’re not saying there will be some Chet Baker channeling going on in the Pine Avenue Park as the Elliott Caine Quintet takes the Carlsbad TGIF Jazz In The Parks stage on August 10, 2007 from 6 to 8 PM, however, there will be some serious Blue Note stylings filling the air. Elliott Caine has performed and/or recorded with numerous groups and individuals, including Wycliff Jean, Beck, and The Beastie Boys, With the Quintet it’s going to be straight ahead jazz.
The repertoire of the group ranges from original melodies from within the group, to songs penned by the “greats”, such as Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, et al; from straight-ahead to Latin to funk grooves and soulful ballads.
We’re starting to think that the entire TGIF series should be held in the Pine Avenue Park, you know, to make it easier for us who live in Carlsbadistan.
It may sound like a club, but it’s really The Carlsbad City Library. On Sunday August 5 at 2 PM the library is presenting a free concert by The Nancy McCallion Duo in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at 1775 Dove Lane.
Nancy McCallion is best known as the songwriter and vocalist for original Celtic-Norteno-you-name-it folk-rock cult band The Mollys. . . McCallion teamed up with high school music partner Catherine Zavala to form The Mollys in 1989, racking up seven indie releases and countless rave-review shows in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand before the group disbanded in 2003.
We’ve been missing a lot of music this summer, but we seriously don’t want to miss Nancy. For more information, call (760) 602-2012.
Carlsbad’s summer TGIF Jazz In The Parks moves to the heart of Carlsbadistan for two weeks. The Pine Avenue Park leg of the tour kicks off with Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca.
Ricardo Lemvo has established himself as a pioneer with his innovative music, combining Latin and African elements from salsa to soukous with an occasional merengue or Afro-Portuguese excursion. This Congo-born artist of Angolan ancestry is the embodiment of the Afro-Latin Diaspora which connects back to Mother Africa via the Cuban clave rhythm. Lemvo is truly multi-cultural and equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo.
We’re going to walk to this one (dragging an ice-chest), see you there.
