Get ready for a rollicking big band time July 27 as TGIF Jazz in The Parks brings five time San Diego Music Awards Best Big Band winners Big Time Operator to Poinsettia Park.
Big Time Operator has a look, a feel, and a totally contagious enthusiasm that is hard to beat and impossible to ignore. Whether you’re 2 or 102, you’ll be tapping your toes and moving to the music as this ten-piece band hits all the high notes.
And we don’t doubt them for one minute. The park will be swinging. And we mean that in a good way.

Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz In the Parks moves to the extra large Poinsettia Park for two stops in July. On July 20th from 6 – 8 PM Samba Mapangala & Orchestra Virunga brings East African pop to Carlsbad.
Their music is an innovative mix of the best rumba and soukous from Congo, with the earthier Kenyan style. Samba composes and sings in both Lingala and Kiswahili. His astounding voice has been described as melting in the ears.
This will probably be the most unusually interesting music of the summer, so don’t miss it. Bon Jovi, it’s not.

New York City’s The Village Voice says that Plena Libre is “the biggest band to play plena, which is a folkloric music out of Puerto Rico, Plena Libre know the tradition but aren’t afraid to draw upon stuff from outside the genre to keep it fresh.”
We’ll all get to see for ourselves when the 13-member, four-time Grammy nominee band plays the final Stagecoach Park stop of Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in the Parks from 6-8 PM on Friday July 13. The band’s eclectic mix of of latin beats will certainly get the park dancing.
Combining a swinging rhythm section, horns and vocals, Plena Libre’s music has been given new light and patterns with contemporary dance floor styles such as songo, samba, reggae, salsa and pambiche.

The Islands @ Carlsbad at the corner of College and Faraday transformed into fair Verona today from noon to 5 PM as the Order Sons of Italy in America (La Costa Dei Fiori Lodge) of Encinitas brought their Festa Italiana to Carlsbad.
Under overcast skies, Sicilian folk dancers entertained the crowd while vendors sold cookies, wine, and even promoted treatments at a day spa. There was also instrumental music, arts and crafts, European art and photography, and most importantly information about bocce ball.
Organizers were happy with the the turn out. “We believe that over the course of the day today we had a couple thousand people come through,” said Joe Zazzaro, vice president of the La Costa Dei Fiori Lodge.
We arrived late and are bummed that we didn’t get to see more of the event. We’re not going to miss it next year, and you shouldn’t either. Click continue for more photos.

Known as “The First Class Sultry Lady of Blues” Ruby has shared the stage with all the greats including Etta James, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, as well as the San Diego Symphony. But this Friday evening from 6-8 PM Ruby is bringing her sultry jazz and blues vocal stylings to Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in the Parks at Stagecoach Park.
We just thought you’d like to know. What else do you have going on this weekend (aside from smuggling in fireworks for Carlsbad’s annual Rogue Fireworks Display at Maple Street).

We’ve lived in Carlsbad for a while now. More than many, less than some. And it’s rare that we venture in past El Camino Real, let alone all the way out to Rancho Santa Fe.
Tonight we ventured to Stagecoach Park for TGIF Jazz in the Park and what we found was a warm lawn-covered bowl filled with more Carlsbadistanians than we’ve ever seen congregated. Couples sharing a picnic basket, kids going crazy on the jungle gym, teens making out behind the old Stagecoach Stop, and boys charging through the underbrush on the wilder edges of the park.
Meanwhile, on stage Sue Palmer “San Diego’s Queen of Boogie Woogie” had a quarter of the crowd up and on their feet. After the initial shock of seeing so many attractive Southern California’s in a place that wasn’t sand, surf, or a stadium wore off we realized that these TGIF events are pretty cool even if they have outgrown all our little Village parks and now occur way out on the Eastern Front.

Sue Palmer has been called “San Diego’s Queen of Boogie Woogie.” And this Friday (June 29) she’ll be playing Stagecoach Park with her Motel Swing Orchestra as part of the Carlsbad TGIF Jazz in the Parks concert series.
Palmer is probably most famous for being the musical partner of blues diva Candye Kane who she travelled the world with as Sue “Beehive” Palmer with Candye Kane and the Swingin’ Armadillos.
Sue is a featured artist on all four of Kane’s CDs under the Antones and Sire labels. Sue’s instrumental composition “Beehive” was featured on Kane’s “Diva La Grande” CD, and Sue and Candye co-wrote the title tune on Kane’s CD “Swango.” “Swango” is also featured in the documentary “The Girl Next Door,” a biography of porn star Stacy Valentine produced by National Public Radio’s Christine Fugat in 2000.
No, we’re not missing this one.

This Friday evening (June 22, 2007) from 6-8 PM Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz In The Parks kicks off it’s 22nd season with Eddie “Devil Boy” Turner at Stagecoach Park. Turner’s guitar work has been described as “otherworldly,” “scorching,” and “chilling.” If his website is any judge, then we’re pretty sure he’s been down to the crossroads, if you know what we mean.
His ethereal style is an amalgam of the Afro-Cuban rhythms of his heritage and the music that influenced him as a teenager: Chicago blues, jazz, r&b and psychedelic rock. The Cuban-born singer/guitarist cut his teeth in several rock bands contributing what Slate magazine describes as “spacey-yet-resounding solos.”
We’ll see you there Friday night.

According to a press release, Carlsbad’s favorite action sports sons Shaun White and Tony Hawk will join Tim McGraw and 80s party band The B-52s:
at Camp Jeep(R) 2007, the annual “owners only” three-day mix of off-road driving and other family- friendly outdoor activities, to be held July 26-28 at the Oak Ridge Estate in Nelson County, Va., near Charlottesville.
The Camp Jeep event, which is open only to Jeep owners, will cost $295 per vehicle. Guess putting on a show for your owners is what comes along with being sponsored. Sadly, we’ll miss this one.
