A Carlsbadistan news tipper’s report that the Chevron Station on Avenida Encinas (in the Ralph’s shopping center) had its ATM forceably removed Friday December 19, 2008 at approximately 4:15 AM in a smash and grab robbery was confirmed by a spokesman for the Carlsbad Police Department.
According to the news tip an employee at the station said, “There was about $15,000 worth of damage for a haul of about $80 and they didn’t touch the register.”
Wonder if it was the same people who made off with $32,000 from a Chula Vista ATM on Thursday morning.

Yesterday, November 6, 2008, while a group of moms and kids were playing in Carlsbadistan’s Pine Avenue Park a 20-something Hispanic man “in big baggy shorts and a white tank” ran through the park with a large handbag, accompanied by a friend on a bike.
We called 911 and the Carlsbad police were on it,” reported Carlsbadistan News Tipper witness. “Three different outfits (2 cars and a motorcycle) were circling the park and a very nice female officer came to get the story. . . .The guys were caught, handbag recovered with no missing pieces and it was business as usual all within the hour–very impressive work by the Carlsbad Police. But, scary to know this happened at a busy park in the middle of the day.”
This is a great reminder to everyone to keep their eyes open. Special thanks to the Good Samaritans involved with this arrest and to the News Tipper who sent it in.

According to a report released this week by the San Diego Association of Governments, crime in North County is on the run. Violent crime in Carlsbadistan is down 46 percent and property crime was down 6 percent, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The agency found that property crime across the county dropped in the first half of 2008 compared with the same period last year. Most North County cities mirrored the regional crime trends.
But just wait. With all the hard economic times experts say crime is bound to rebound.
Carlsbad Police Department spokeswoman Lynn Diamond said she was worried that people would become complacent about locking doors and windows because of the region’s continued drop in crime. She agreed with SANDAG that the poor economy could cause an increase in crime.
So remember: lock your doors. There are going to be some desperate holiday shoppers this season.
