Masked Men Rob Sears Jewelry Department

by The Editors on April 4, 2008

Jewl 033008 01Obviously not the brightest criminals, two masked men “smashed doors at Sears at Westfield Plaza Camino Real before the store opened Friday and stole jewelry from several display cases” according to a story on SignOnSanDiego.com.

Carlsbad police Lt. Matt Magro said the men, shown on store surveillance camera tapes, were wearing all-black clothing and ski masks when the robbery occurred shortly before 6 a.m. . . .Magro said the men emptied several display cases. The exact loss was still being determined, but he said it was in the thousands of dollars.

Yeah, if they were lucky. Probably hundreds, right? If they’d been after tools, or a Ty Pennington Style Orange Foliage Design Vase Collection they would have been in the right place.

Someone Dumped Oil Into The Lagoon

by The Editors on March 31, 2008

Special Carlsbadistan thanks going out to who ever dumped their prized used oil collection into a storm drain this afternoon.

A city employee working on a sewer project in the area of Chinquapin Avenue and Long Place first reported a pollutant running from a storm drain at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, Carlsbad Public Works Department Supervisor Don Wasko said. . . . A few gallons of what looks like used motor oil have so far drained into the lagoon, Wasko said, with much of it being absorbed by special filters that clean-up crews have put in place.

Luckily, if the person was dumb enough to get caught, they’ll be paying for the Agua Hedionda Lagoon clean up. It’s possible.

Ike Turner Blown Away

by The Editors on January 17, 2008

Ike Turner BstageWe mourned the loss of frequent Carlsbadistan visitor Ike Turner when he was found dead in his bed on December 12, 2007. And we were even more bummed to find that the San Marcos Medical Examiner’s office reported on January 15, 2008 that Turner died of an apparent “accidental cocaine overdose.” Let’s just say this, anyone who is still doing blow at 76 is seriously living on the edge. And that’s apparently where Ike liked it. Rock on.

Christmas Eve Stabbing At 7-Eleven

by The Editors on December 26, 2007

Paul Iraci, 24, and Christopher Davis, 22, apparently were involved in a fight early Christmas morning in front of the 7-Eleven on Oak Avenue. Both were discovered when a car apparently driven by the man who stabbed them crashed into a closed business near the Carlsbad Inn.

The vehicle was gone when police arrived, but a security guard for the business told officers he saw an injured man walk to the nearby parking lot of Cessy’s Taco Shop, where police found Iraci laying in a pool of blood, according to a press release. . . The second victim, Davis, was identified when he reported to a hospital on Camp Pendleton for treatment of stab wounds, Lowe said.

Police are still searching for at least one suspect. Have a holly jolly Christmas.

Robbery Suspect Chase Ends in Carlsbad

by The Editors on December 23, 2007

Today we got an email from a Carlsbadistan reader who was at the corner of Palomar Airport Rd, and the Costco parking lot on Thursday night December 20, 2007 at about 8 PM.

Two police cars sat in the middle of the intersection blocking traffic with their lights of for about 4 minutes, then a dark colored truck flew by heading toward the beach, followed by 10 police cars in hot pursuit, the two cars in the intersection squealed as they turned and followed. . . I didn’t see anything in the news on it at night so I figured they must have caught the guy before he got to the freeway and started a real chase.

We’re sorry, but we skipped putting the story up on Friday, so here it is: The truck was a Dodge Ram that undercover police had been “keeping an eye on” according to a story in the North County Times. The truck was involved in a group of 14 robberies in North County over the past six months. While they were tailing the truck the occupants robbed a Domnio’s Pizza at 805 W. San Marcos Blvd.

Law enforcement officers from several agencies pursued the vehicle for about 10 minutes until it crashed near Las Flores Drive and Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, Wager said.

Four Oceanside residents (all suspected gang members) were arrested including: Devon Phillips, 23, and three juveniles, ages 15, 16 and 17. So that’s the story and thanks for keeping us on our game.
