Ah, The Sunny Days Of Fall In Carlsbad

by The Editors on October 7, 2007

Soccer

The artificial turf glistening in the afternoon sun. The savage ladies of soccer slaughtering each other at Pine Park, and darkness coming earlier with each passing day. We love Carlsbad in the fall.

Carlsbad Squeaks By La Costa Canyon

by The Editors on October 6, 2007

We’re not big football fans, however, it appears that the Carlsbad High School football team is on to some kind of winning streak. In fact, counting last night’s 8-7 scramble over La Costa Canyon they’ve won the last 25 games and are currently ranked number one in the county. We guess that means the really big news will come when they finally lose one. We’ll let you know if (and when) that happens.

Capps Ready for the NHRA Fall Nationals

by The Editors on September 19, 2007

R CappsCarlsbad’s drag racing extraordinaire Ron Capps spoke to the media prior to the 22nd Annual O’Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals these weekend at the Texas Motorplex and here’s a little what he had to say about a season in which he finds himself third in the funny car rankings.

To be honest, anybody who tells you they are not counting the points are lying to you. Strategy is so different [with the new playoff format]. You really can’t have any small mistakes, whether it’s the team, the driver, or the crew chief. You have to have some luck on your side because there’s going to be some things you’re going to have to overcome. And more than anything, you just have to be able to peak at the right time, and right now is the time.

Follow the link for the rest of the interview. And, to catch Ron’s runs check ESPN2 on September 23 at 8 AM PST or September 30th at 9 AM.

Capps Loses In First Elimination Round

by The Editors on September 5, 2007

Bahn3
Last week we mentioned that Carlsbad’s funny car drag racing champion Ron Capps was on his way to the Mac Tools US Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. Well, things didn’t go as planned for Capps last weekened. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round of eliminations at the US Nationals on Monday. And if that wasn’t enough, he also lost the lead in the points race as well.

By the end of the day, losing finalist Robert Hight had taken over the championship lead and Capps had fallen to fourth, with a 10-point lead turning into a 51-point deficit.

As they say in the business, “That’s racing.” Ron said:

“It’s very had to put something like that behind you,” he continued. “I wanted to throw up on the return road on the way back, just because of how good that run was, and after yesterday I felt so confident this morning that we were gong to have a great day. And we should have. The car ran great, that’s why it’s disappointing for the team. I obviously didn’t pull my part of the rope. We’ll just have to regroup and go to Memphis.”

Ron Capps Powerade Funny Car Series

by The Editors on August 29, 2007

Bahn3

In the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car points standings Carlsbad’s Ron Capps is on top, but apparently all that goes away as the season winds down to the Countdown to Four this weekend at the Mac Tools US Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. The good news is he has a secret weapon.

That’s crew chief Ed McCulloch, who has won more U.S. Nationals Funny Car titles than any other driver. McCulloch had claimed five Funny Car victories (1971, ’72, ’80, ’88, ’90) and one Top Fuel win (1992) at this prestigious event before he retired as a driver at the end of 1993. Both Capps and McCulloch have competed in seven Showdown bonus events. This weekend will mark Capps’ eighth appearance in the Showdown.

To keep up with Ron check out his blog at Brut Racing, or watch the U.S. Nationals on ESPN 2 on Sunday August 2, at 8:30 AM Carlsbadistan time.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon Patrol

by The Editors on August 19, 2007

After publishing reports of motorboaters’ rampant disregard for the “passive use/no motorboats” area on Carlsbad’s Agua Hedionda Lagoon we decided we should check it out for ourselves.

The buoys are back up (there are five of them). And, after watching for approximately 15 minutes on Saturday August 18, 2007 we found that the majority of the boaters were respectful of the buoys. We did however see one boat that seemed to be ignoring the no fly zone all together. Click the video below to see more:

Said To Drive #21 in Centurion

by The Editors on August 12, 2007

SenglenCarlsbad’s own NASCAR driver Boris Said (of the No Fear team) was in the process of sitting out Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen race thanks to a qualifying “rain-out” at Watkins Glen International when Said reportedly ran into #21 car driver Bill Elliot in the garage.

“Hey man, you should be driving my car,” Elliott said to Said, who was locked out of Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen when qualifying was rained out Friday. As he walked to his Busch car, Said smiled and responded, “Sure, no problem, I’ll drive” . . . Elliott marched into the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing hauler and asked team co-owners Eddie and Len Wood if they would allow him to give up his seat in the No. 21 Ford to Said.

Elliot believes Said will be able to lift the number 21 car up in the rankings if he has a strong finish.

The Chargers Express Carlsbad Bus Stops

by The Editors on August 11, 2007

If driving to Chargers games seems a daunting task this season, don’t worry: you can ride the bus to and from Qualcomm for just $12 for adults and $4 for kids under 12.

The bus leaves Westfield Shoppingtown Plaza Camino Real two hours before game time, the park-and-ride lot at I-5 and La Costa Avenue one hour and 40 minutes before game time.

Tomorrow’s game against the Seattle Seahawks starts at 5 PM. Why drive and drink when you can ride with the fans.

Sharapova Shuts Down Acura Classic

by The Editors on August 6, 2007

2007-8-6-75976251Maria Sharapova’s “powerful baseline attack” was apparently too much for Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder as the Amazonian goddess plowed right through to win the 2007 Acura Classic at the La Costa Resort and Spa on Sunday 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

“In the first set I hit some really good shots when she was serving and that opened doors for me,” Sharapova told reporters. . . In the second set I lost that extra step and once you give her a little edge, she’s going to get a lot of balls back and she’s not going to waste her time. I hesitated for too many balls and I knew I had to step in and hit it again.”

And with that, the Acura Classic is no more. Unfortunately, we were not there to see it. If you were, let us know how it went in the commments.

Upper Deck Vapor Rubs Vick

by The Editors on July 29, 2007

Carlsbad’s hometome trading card and sport memorabilia company Upper Deck has decided to pull Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick from its 2007 trading card releases and removed Vick memorabilia from their online store after allegations of Vick’s involvement with dog fighting have been brought to light.

“Of course we appreciate the fact that Mr. Vick is innocent until proven guilty, but the allegations alone have resulted in an outpouring of very strong emotion within our organization and among the collecting community,” said Kerri Stockholm, Director of Marketing for Upper Deck. “We believe collectors will agree and support this decision as being the best course of action for our football business.”

Guess this rules out the official Michael Vick maimed dog action figures, huh?
