Carlsbad’s De-Fishing Soap Lands In Walmart

by The Editors on May 9, 2016

defishingCarlsbad’s popular De-Fishing Soap is going national this month with a push into 1,200 Walmart stores.

For the past decade, the liquid soap, available in 3 oz bottles and and 5ml travel packs, has been garnering a strong local following in specialty tackle shops and sporting goods stores throughout San Diego. Company owners and avid fishermen, David Leon and Nate Gaudioso, purchased the company in 2014. Self-described “serial entrepreneurs,” David and Nate were immediately taken with the product’s performance, and combined their love of fishing and watersports in their decision to purchase and market De-Fishing Soap.

Carlsbad Socks Help Boys & Girls Clubs

by The Editors on April 11, 2016

Carlsbad_Socks

With more than 30 years of experience in the apparel industry, Carlsbad local John Rich is hyper-aware of what is being worn in his community. And although there were plenty of Carlsbad t-shirts, hats and bags, he was hard pressed to find a pair of Carlsbad socks.

“I consider socks to be like a t-shirt for your feet,” joked John aka JR. “I also noticed how much the Carlsbad sign resonated with the community. I saw the void, combined the two ideas, threw in a charitable component, and bam! Carlsbad Socks were born. I’m also proud that we’re putting America back to work one sock at a time, as they are manufactured right here in the USA.”

April 5, 2016 Is Ralph Rubio Day

by The Editors on April 1, 2016

Ralph_RubioThe City of San Diego has named April 5, 2015 Ralph Rubio Day in honor of Carlsbad businessman (and Rubio’s Coastal Grill Co-Founder) Ralph Rubio (right) for “his entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to the community and contributions to the food industry.”

A San Diego State University alumnus, Ralph brought his love of fish tacos to the United States after a college trip to Baja California, Mexico. 33 years after opening the first Rubio’s restaurant – a walk-up fish taco stand in Mission Bay – Rubio’s Coastal Grill has established a passionate fan base throughout the Southwestern United States and has largely been credited for starting the fish taco phenomenon in America. Cited by The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times as the country’s top fish taco expert, Rubio’s Coastal Grill has sold more than 200 million Original Fish Tacos®.

In honor of Ralph Rubio Day, Rubios is offering their original fish taco for $1.75 at all San Diego County Rubio’s Coastal Grill locations (including the location at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets) all day on April 5, 2016. If you’re hungry, you might want to stop by. For the official word from Rubio’s please follow the jump.

City Council To Blow Half Million Dollars

by The Editors on November 18, 2015

Council_shades

In what came as no real surprise, the Carlsbad, California City Council on Tuesday night (November 17, 2015) voted to hold a special election on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 for the proposed Caruso Affiliated lagoon shopping mall, rather than scheduling it for a future general election.

The special election, on a referendum which could have easily been added to the next general election at almost no cost, will cost the City of Carlsbad close to $500,000. The Council collectively said:

“We have thoroughly reviewed this plan, including extensive technical and environmental studies, and continue to believe the benefits are far greater than any other commercial development that would eventually be built on this land. We also respect the referendum process and support Carlsbad voters having an opportunity to make a final decision at the first available opportunity.”

In other words, they’re hoping to move forward with the mall as soon as possible. The referendum will need a “simple majority” of 50 percent plus one vote to be defeated.

Boar’s Crossing Fish Fry Helps Kids

by The Editors on November 2, 2015

Boar's Crossin Gives BackFor the past 11 years Boar’s Crossing owner Ralph Burnette has held a Fish Fry Fundraiser in August to help raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. Over the years he has donated more than $100,000 to the clubs.

The event brings the community together on a summer afternoon to support the Club while enjoying excellent fish tacos. Raising at least $10,000 annually, much of the donation comes straight from Ralph’s coffers – with more than $100,000 being donated to the Club over the years. . . “What I enjoy most is taking the money to the Club staff, and going on a shopping spree with them,” said Burnette. “They make a list, and get items that are needed but not in their budget. This year’s items included a flat screen in the lobby used for announcements, plenty of sports equipment, and even a computer.”

Carlsbad Referendum Gets The Signatures

by The Editors on October 27, 2015

Caruso Affiliated’s plans to sneak their lagoon mall plans past the citizens of Carlsbad (and environmental checks and balances) are over for the time being, according to a  news release from the City of Carlsbad.

The County of San Diego Registrar of Voters has verified that a referendum to overturn the City Council’s Aug. 25 decision to approve The Agua Hedionda South Shore Specific Plan has the required number of signatures to move forward to the next step in the process.

So what is the next step? Well, the City Council has two options — they can either repeal the ordinance they passed on August 25, 2015 (which would be the cheapest way to go) or they can put the matter up for vote at either a regular election or a “special election.” It will be interesting to see which way they go as they claim a “special election” could cost the City of Carlsbad up to $550,000.  For the official word from the City of Carlsbad, please follow the jump.

North Village Goes Up With Seagrove

by The Editors on October 27, 2015

SeagroveJust the other day we noticed the modern townhomes that seemed to have sprouted up overnight at the North end of State Street in the village of Carlsbad and they look really nice. The 47-unit development, called Seagrove, is the most recent work of national homebuilding giant Taylor Morrison.

Seagrove offers the unique opportunity for townhome living in the center of it all, where options for entertainment in Carlsbad are bountiful including boutique shopping, local restaurants and the sea just a short walk away. . . “Imagine being able to step out of your front door and experience all the spectacular qualities that make San Diego one of the most desirable cities to call home,” said Phil Bodem, president of Taylor Morrison’s Southern California division. “An excellent location and luxury design is what makes Seagrove a standout community.”

They’re a bit of a jaunt to the beach (thanks to the railroad tracks Army & Navy Academy), but for high style living in the Village ($960K and up), they’re pretty smooth. For the official word from Taylor Morrison, please follow the jump.

The UT Discovers Gaia Gelato

by The Editors on October 19, 2015

2441075_sd_no_me_cn_gelato_008_r900x493

The San Diego Union Tribune has decided to blow the cover on our best kept secret gelato spot in The Village with a profile on Italian cousins Cristina Amoroso and Paola Richard. Their Gaia Gelato located in the Village Faire Shopping Center has been our go-to cold sweets spot since they opened.

The desserts they serve are made in the Italian style, which is denser, creamier and with less sugar than many American-style gelatos. Amoroso has developed more than 60 flavors of gelato, sorbet and granita and introduces new ones each week. To preserve the flavor and texture, gelatos are made in small batches and not sold after 24 hours.

It’s no wonder why their Yelp reviews are off the charts. For the rest of the story please click the link.

Super Shady Ad For Building A Mall

by The Editors on September 13, 2015

Nothing better outlines the outrageous lengths to which LA based shopping mall developer Caruso Affilitated will go in their campaign to obfuscate the truth about their development plans than their own disinformation ads that have been running non-stop on the web and local TV.

This edit above is in support of building a shopping mall on the shores of the Agua Hedionda lagoon. Did you hear the word “mall” used? Or shopping? Or acres of parking lots? Or anything at all related to what the developer hopes to do with the property? No. You didn’t. That’s because Caruso Affiliated would rather not mention all that. We also find an LA developer’s use of the word “our” when referring to the Carlsbad City Council a bit misleading as well. Talk about “outside interests.”

For a reminder of what Caruso Affiliated shopping malls looks like, check out their own photo of The Grove below. It was probably named after the nursery grown trees they sandwiched into holes in the concrete outside of Pottery Barn Kids. Nice use of open space, huh?

Oh, and remember: Please Sign The Referendum Click here for locations.
