US Airways Pulling Out of Carlsbad

by The Editors on January 17, 2008

Blaming rising oil prices, US Airways announced Wednesday January 16, that they will no longer be offering up daily roundtrip flights to Phoenix from McClellan-Palomar Airport, according to a story in the North County Times. Company spokesman Morgan Durrant said they have no plans to reinstate service “In the near future.”

“It just didn’t make sense, looking at the proximity of the San Diego International Airport,” Durrant said. “We’ve got a lot of folks here who scrutinize markets and our service and aircraft allocation. … It seems to be the way it’s going to be for a while.”

We wish we could say we were going to miss US Air, but honestly, in our experience they have been the worst airline in terms of equipment failures and delays. In fact, according to a July report on twenty airlines only five were worse that US Air when it comes to being on time. Their on-time percentage was only 66.3. In their defense, Mesa Airlines, the company that ran the Carlsbad to Phoenix route ranked number five on the list.

Carlsbadistanians Are Happy With City Hall

by The Editors on January 17, 2008

A survey released Wednesday January 16, 2008 reported 58 percent of us are “very satisfied” and 33.5 percent were “somewhat satisfied” with with the City of Carlsbad’s overall job of providing services, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. The study, performed by Carlsbad-based BW Research Partnership, is commissioned by the City every year to chart their progress.

The overall rating is identical to last year’s results. . . “That’s quite high compared with other cities,” said Josh Williams, president of BW Research.

Not bad at all. Congratulations to the City.

Ashworth Buys Golf Outerwear Company

by The Editors on January 16, 2008

When the golf clothing market is tanking what does Carlsbad-based golf clothing company Ashworth, Inc do? They acquire another golf clothing company (Sunice) and set it up a wholly-owned subsidary.

Sunice Holdings, Inc., which will own the Sun Ice and Sunice trademarks and be entirely focused on the new technical outerwear line. The product line will be concurrently marketed by the Company’s existing sales and marketing team dedicated to Ashworth®-branded apparel. FLG will provide design services for Sunice Holdings, Inc. and facilitate sourcing relationships for the new outerwear line.

To Ashworth’s credit they got Sunice for pretty much nothing. Rolling forward they’ll just have to share the EBITDA with the former owners and it also gets them into the booming ski outerwear market (please note sarcasm on the world “booming”).

Ruff Ruff: Planters Get New Bark

by The Editors on January 16, 2008

Newbark-1

The beautiful center dividers on Carlsbadistan’s section of Coast Highway got an upgrade yesterday as workers installed a new layer of bark chips in front of the Falling Palms Hotel. And it looks much better, even if the bark will float out into the street during the next winter storm.

Mavericks In Hurley Walk Off

by The Editors on January 16, 2008

The La Costa Canyon Mavericks fashion modeling team (we made that last part up, sorry) will be going catwalk-to-catwalk against La Jolla, Lincoln, and Point Loma high schools in Hurley clothing’s Walk the Walk fashion competition on January 25, 2008 at the House of Blues at 1055 5th Ave. San Diego, CA.

Hurley’s “Walk The Walk” Fashion Show is dedicated to inspiring creativity and confidence among its diverse audience. The competition flips the traditional fashion show model, giving participants total artistic control backstage to interpret Hurley fashion, while stylists and designers look on from the crowd. . . . The participants are responsible for styling the outfits, creating an overall theme, providing models, and overseeing hair, makeup, accessories, and shoes. They are also responsible for managing production, music selection and event promotion.

Apparently, Hurley designers need inspiration, and high school’s oft overlook fashionaletes need their chance to compete. The winning school will take home a $5000 art and music program donation from Hurley. As Tim Gunn would say, “Make it work, Mavericks.”

Callaway Gives Golfers The Shafts

by The Editors on January 16, 2008

CallawayThis sounds like the silliest thing ever, but we don’t have to remind anyone that we don’t golf. Thanks to some adjustment to the US Golf Association’s rules Carlsbadistan’s Callaway Golf has created the I-Mix Technology which allows golfers to change up their shaft and/or head for every occasion.

“Our new I-MIX Technology gives golfers the same access and ability to experiment and optimize their equipment that tour professionals have,” said Jeff Colton, Senior Vice President of Research and Development for Callaway Golf. “No one’s swing is the same from day-to-day – neither are the weather or course conditions. Our I-MIX Technology gives everyone the ability to quickly and easily customize their equipment, every time they play.”

Now, instead of buying one club, golfers can buy one club head and four or five different shafts for that head. This allows hacks to honestly blame their clubs every single time out.

Lawsuits Filed Against Desalination Plant

by The Editors on January 15, 2008

Desal Ariel-1

According to a story in the North County Times (are we quoting them too much these days?) the Surfrider Foundation and the Planning and Conservation League filed lawsuits on Monday January 14, 2008 claiming that “The California Coastal Commission acted illegally when it granted a permit to the proposed $300 million plant despite acknowledging that commissioners needed more information.”

Surfrider representatives say the desalination plant would hurt marine life and Agua Hedionda Lagoon, where the plant would be located, and that Poseidon hasn’t proved otherwise. . . . “The substantive issue of whether they can even mitigate (the harm) is still out there,” said Marco Gonzalez, the lawyer representing the environmental groups.

Of course, Poseidon officials are denying this:

Poseidon Vice President Peter MacLaggan said that over the course of eight years of study, the company has proved the plant will not harm the environment. . . . He said the company is simply working out details with the Coastal Commission and that the suit was without merit. . . . “They’re challenging eight years of environmental research and study by pre-eminent scientists in this field from Scripps that has been reviewed by the various permitting agencies, who all came to the same conclusion — move forward,” MacLaggan said.

We’re happy to see someone standing up to industrialization of the Carlsbadistan environment.

Carlsbad Snags Another Encinitas Planner

by The Editors on January 15, 2008

We’re not sure if this is a good thing or not by the looks of Encinitas, but the North County Times is reporting that Dave DeCordova has left his “high-level” Encinitas planning job for a spot in the Carlsbad Planning Department.

DeCordova advanced through the ranks into a supervisor position. Recently, he has overseen a citywide housing plan, a planning document for downtown Cardiff, a study on a mobile home park and amendments to the city’s zoning code, Murphy said. . . In addition to DeCordova, two other high-level planners — Gary Barberio and Sandra Holder — have left Encinitas to work in Carlsbad in the past seven years.

DeCordova actually lives in Vista so he hasn’t had to live in his own planning zone for a while. Welcome, Dave.

by The Editors on January 15, 2008

According to Yahoo! Hot Jobs:

The City of Carlsbad is accepting applications for the following positions: Senior Building Inspector, Principal Librarian Police Records Specialist I/II, Accounting Supervisor Utility Workers I/II.

We’ve heard city jobs aren’t so bad. In fact, if the City employees we know are the norm, then the city gives employees ample time to surf. . . but don’t quote us.

Man Plows Car Into Buena Vista Lagoon

by The Editors on January 13, 2008

This morning at around 1:30 AM a man apparently “crashed” his non-amphibious vehicle into the Buena Vista Lagoon. Because of this the CHP had to close down Carlsbad Boulevard.

Authorities closed down all but a single lane of the roadway near State Street at about 11 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported. The closure is expected to remain in place for two or three hours, the agency said.

Apparently the driver was not hurt.
