Green House

On the twelfth day of Carlsbadistan Christmas my true love gave to me a swanky, 1978 Donald Cromley designed home on the golf course at La Costa. According to Modern San Diego the design for the home was “inspired by the Bauhaus architects” of the early 20th Century. But don’t think for a minute that this is a 30-year-old Christmas gift. The Green Home was totally updated with a new gourmet kitchen, cabinets, and complete bathroom and wiring upgrades in 2008.

Make white Christmas dreams come true. And remember: it’s a buyer’s market so don’t expect to pay the $2,495,000 asking price. Contact Tom and Peggy Cozens and ask them about MLS listing #080074794.

BJ’s Restaurant Brewhouse Comes To Carlsbad

by The Editors on December 11, 2008

BjsWe were pretty hyped when we heard that P.F. Chang’s China Bistro was coming to the new Paseo Carlsbad “retail center” across the street from the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, but now we hear that another restaurant has signed a lease (20 years at $6.98 million): BJ’s Restaurant Brewhouse. Really?

Does Carlsbad really need a loud, chain restaurant that serves beer, pizza, and bar food? Aren’t Pizza Port, Karl Strauss, and that place in the Costco parking lot enough? Hopefully, BJ’s is at the opposite end of the mall from P.F. Chang’s.

Want To Participate In the Rose Parade?

by The Editors on December 11, 2008

Naamfloat09

On New Year’s morning 2009, Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California will feature a float from right here in Carlsbadistan sponsored by NAMM, the International Music Products Association. And those with some free time between December 26 to 31, 2008 can help decorate the float and get bragging rights that are two fold, according to the Museum of Making Music’s B.J. Morgan.

1. Point to a float on television and say you helped decorate it.
2. Raise money for a local museum

CEF Honors Outgoing Board Members

Long-time Carlsbad Education Foundation Board Members Steve Pynes and Bill Walls (pictured above with former President Julie Baker and Board President Lisa Posard) were honored last night for their years of service, according to a press release. The two attorneys have concluded their service after nearly 10 years.

Honored last evening by immediate past president of the board Julie Baker and current board president Lisa Posard, along with many other board members attending the Board of Trustees meeting of the Carlsbad Unified School District, attorneys Pynes and Walls were publicly thanked for their many years of support to public education. . . .“We appreciate their many years of dedicated service to CEF,” said past President Julie Baker. “Bill and Steve were valued members of the foundation who helped us oversee the contribution of dollars which funded the schools with up-to-date computer equipment, theatre and band programs, libraries, the award-winning CHS-TV program, and more.”

Epic Lead

Epic Guitars founder Kevin Kinnear believes handmade guitars are as much art as they are instrument; maybe more. That’s why his new store on State Street in the Village feels more like an art gallery than a retail business. The guitars are presented in the three room store like paintings in a gallery. Each guitar is given its own breathing space while couches and comfortable chairs line the walls. None look better in the space than the all Koa R. Taylor Style 2 with Cocobolo binding.

As a result of the carefully thinned back, sides and top, and the light scalloped bracing, it takes very little energy to make the entire guitar body come alive. The sound is signature R. Taylor, offering superb note definition over the entire fingerboard, exquisite sustain, and chords that bloom as a finely balanced palette of expression.

At $6,280 the R. Taylor Style 2 may be the kind of present people buy for themselves, but there is no doubt that the guitarist on any Christmas list would be blown away to find something like this under the tree.

Carlsbadistan has its own theatre in the Village, but we just don’t go enough. We’re guessing we’re not the only ones. That’s just one of the reasons why a New Village Arts Theatre Season 8 / Four Show Package ($163.00) is such a perfect gift this holiday season. The package includes tickets to one play before Christmas Off The Ground, and then Bulrusher, Be Aggressive, and Four Dogs and A Bone.

More than something to open on Christmas morning, the gift of the theatre says, “We are going out four times in the coming six month, no matter what else happens, and it’s not going to be to the movies.” Even better: this gift can be purchased online right now. And will only take five minutes.

Dot Hill Cuts Carlsbad Ops By 40 Percent

by The Editors on December 9, 2008

DothillCarlsbad’s Dot Hill, the company that refers to itself as the “market leader in providing flexible storage offerings and responsive service and support to OEMs and System Integrators, from engagement through end-of-life” has decided to cut 40 percent of it’s operations in Carlsbad by the end of the fourth quarter of 2008 as part of a 10 pecent reduction in their workforce, according to a story on Trading Markets.com.

The company said that its board has completed a review of potential restructuring and cost reduction opportunities and decided to implement the plan. Dot Hill was originally planning to consolidate most of its United States operations into its Longmont, Colorado operation by the middle of 2009, but the current economic environment caused it to defer the facilities move until 2010 in order to preserve cash.

And the economic depression marching on through North County.

City Done With Powerplant Site Search

by The Editors on December 9, 2008

The City of Carlsbad has thrown in the towel on plans to help NRG find a different location for their proposed powerplant, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

In a letter to NRG Vice President Tim Hemig, Carlsbad municipal projects manager Joe Garuba wrote: “Carlsbad believes that our coastline is a precious resource and it is not an appropriate location for industrial land uses.” . . . Without NRG’s cooperation, “the city recognizes that its individual efforts (to find an alternative site) are meaningless,” Garuba added. . . A copy of the letter, dated Dec. 1, was sent to the state energy commission.

Seems the industrialization of the lagoon will continue, sadly.

LivespeakR Rocks Carlsbadistan iPhones

by The Editors on December 9, 2008

Livespeakr

A Carlsbad audio company, Digital Group Audio, is set to launch an all-new, ultra portable speaker system for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch. Created by Erik Groset and Robin Defay, two under-30 entrepreneurs, the LiveSpeakR turns iPhones into mini boom boxes.

This amazing new speaker system features a set of speakers that fold-up and store conveniently behind the iPhone when they are not in use allowing for maximum portability. When the unit is stored (or hidden) it piggy-backs on the iPhone or iPod Touch making it portable enough to fit in your pocket for on-the-go multimedia. The unique style of the LiveSpeakR™ is visually stunning featuring bold design inspired by modern art. At launch the product will be available in black or white with more colors to come.

We’d add them to our gift list, however, they don’t ship until January so they wouldn’t make it for Christmas. To pre-order the speaker system visit http://www.LiveSpeakR.com.
