Hey kids, on Sunday afternoon December 7, 2008 Santa Claus is coming to town, but he won’t be in overweight sleigh pulled by countless raindeer. No. He will be riding on the back of an antique Carlsbadistan fire engine. Join Santa and his elves at The Shops at Village Faire at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Blvd.
There will be crafts, snacks, singing, dancing, and the annual Rotary Christmas tree lighting ceremony officiated by Mayor Bud Lewis. Click here for all the pictures and video from last year’s event.

For the past 59 years Warren Miller movies have signaled the official start of winter for skiers around the world. On December 14, 2008 the newest in the Miller fanchise Children of Winter hits the Carlsbad Village Theatre for two shows (4 and 7 PM).
When it’s cold and snowing, others run inside. But skiers and snowboarders do the opposite, no matter how old we are,” said Max Bervy, director and producer. “We are all the Children of Winter, and if you ski or ride, this movie reaffirms what we all know, that we’re lucky to know the shortest, coldest days of the year.”
The film will be the same old movie we’ve all seen year after year, however this time around it’s narrated by former Olympic freestyle skier Jonny Mosley from a dazzlingly hilarious script by Micah Abrams. That plus all the free give-a-ways and it’s about as close as we get to a snowy winter night in Carlsbadistan. Click here for more information and to buy tickets.
Children of Winter shows December, 2008, 4:00 and 7:00 PM at the Village Theater, 2822 State St.

One after another, wet-suited, harnessed men in helmets jump into the water between the jetties at Warm Waters and are pulled out to sea by the current. Moments later they are “rescued” by helicopter and taken to safety on the beach. The helicopter coming in slow and low stirs up sand and spray and attracts a crowd of people some on walks and others just stop on their way by.
Today it’s only training. The San Diego Fire Department is one day into their annual three-day swift water rescue training in front of the Power Station. “There is not a lot of swift water in San Diego,” said Jim Gilcrist, Air Ops Chief for the San Diego Fire Department. “But it doesn’t take much rain for some of the canyons (especially around Mission Valley) to get extremely dangerous and our crews need to train for it. Through the graciousness of the Power station we are able to use this area.”
The show continues through Thursday when the tide is on the way out and the water is flowing “swiftly.”

Carlsbadistan’s Dee Forsberg (along with other members of the Surfrider Founation) kicked off a month long project yesterday that will see 50 giant stainless steel ashtrays installed at beaches in North County, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Forsberg hopes for immediate results from the new ashcans. “My goal is to raise awareness. It’s really to get people to stop and think,” she said. . . One day this past summer, she filled a kitchen garbage sack with discarded cigarette butts at Tamarack and tied another one to a nearby post. “I thought maybe whoever is sitting here and smoking will start to use the trash bag,” she said.
That’s great because we’re sick of looking at butts all over the beach. Wait, rewind that. We’re sick of looking at cigarette butts all over the beach.

A week after reports of a $350,000 re-branding campaign by the Carlsbad Tourism Business Improvement District surfaced, the Director of Carlsbad’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, Kurt Burkhart has announced that he is leaving Carlsbadistan to take a job in his home state of Virginia, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.
I don’t think there’s anybody that could put their heart and soul in (to the job) like Kurt did,” bureau board Chairwoman Nancy Nayudu as she discussed the many tourism-related boards and commissions that Burkhart has served on in his eight years as the bureau’s leader.
We’d say we were going to miss Kurt, but we’ve never really noticed anything he or the Convention and Visitor Bureau has ever done.
