27th Annual Oktoberfest Rolls Out Today

Oktoberfest2009The Rotary Clubs of Carlsbad are holding their 27th Annual Oktoberfest today (Saturday, October 3, 2009) in Carlsbadistan’s Holiday Park.

The family event features German food, German music, dancing, and a host of children’s activities, including a pumpkin-decorating contest, facing painting, clowns, and much more. The pumpkin-decorating contest is for children 5-15 years old. Each winner in the four age group categories will receive $25. . . Roger and the Villagers will play its traditional brand of polka music, including the beloved “Chicken Dance, from 5 to 10 p.m. . . A German dinner will be served from 12 noon to 8 p.m. The dinner includes two German sausages, German potatoes, cabbage and a roll. Tickets are $10.

Shuttle buses will be running from the Southwest corner of the Westfield Plaza Camino Real beginning at 11:30 AM running until 10:30 PM. Click here for past Carlsbadistan Oktoberfest coverage.

Alga Norte Grading Is On The Agenda

Alga NorteSeems like we (and TK Arnold) were just talking about this the other day, and now the City of Carlsbadistan has announced that the City Council will consider updated plans and specifications for the construction of the Alga Norte Community Park at its Tuesday, October 6, 2009, meeting. They will also authorize the City Clerk to advertise for bids for the grading of the park site which is apparently the first step in building the 32-acre project on Alicante Road and Poinsettia Lane.

Movie And A Hold Up Melee In Carlsbad

A man with a gun robbed two 24-year-old men in front of the La Costa 6 Cinema’s at the corner of Alga and El Camino Real, in Carlsbadistan at 6:40 PM on Thursday, October 1, 2009, according to a story in the North County Times.

The victims told police that a black man in his early 20s approached and asked for a cigarette while they were in front of the Ultra Star Cinema at 6941 El Camino Real. . . They gave him one —- but then he pulled a gun and demanded their wallets and cell phones. They complied, according a press release issued by Carlsbad police. . . But when the gunman asked for their car keys, they refused, police said. The thief took off running toward the Dove Apartments, on the east side of El Camino Real.

The guys reportedly chased the thief down and caught him just in time for one of the thief’s Latino friends to roll up in an SUV and jumped out to rescue the thief. And beating on both men, he and the thief got away.

Boys & Girls Club Gala Raises $185,000

Cottingham.ChelbergThe Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad held their annual gala “Havana Nights” at the Four Seasons Aviara on Saturday, August 29, 2009 and raised nearly $185,000 in support of the Clubs’ after school programs.

“I am extremely proud of the fun, memorable evening we shared,” said Honorary Chair John Cottingham, Chief Legal officer of Life Technologies. “And, thanks to the talented members of the event committee, we were able to raise significant funds that will benefit our community’s children.”

ViaSat Buys Wildblue For $568 Million

Viasat LogoCarlsbadistan based satellite communication system vendor ViaSat has announced that it “has signed a definitive agreement to acquire WildBlue Communications, a privately held satellite broadband service provider, in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $568 million,” according to a story on Multichannel.com.

“By integrating ViaSat-1 and its ground network technology into the WildBlue operational and distribution platform, we believe we can meaningfully reduce our operational execution risks,” ViaSat chairman and CEO Mark Dankberg said in announcing the deal.

The transaction is expected to close in the quarter ending April 2, 2010, which is the end of ViaSat’s fiscal year. The transaction is not subject to a vote of the ViaSat shareholders.
