Carlsbad’s Missing Boy Home Safely

by The Editors on September 7, 2009

Yesterday’s story of a missing 10-year-old boy at the beach in Carlsbadistan has a very happy ending. Carlsbad Police were first notified that a boy was missing at 4:45 PM and by 6 PM the San Diego County Sheriff was flying up and down the beach alerting the public to the missing child with a PA. But, according to Police, by 7 PM the search was over and the child was back safely with his parents.

A Carlsbad Police Department operator said the boy apparently wandered off and then, after hearing his name being called from the helicopter, borrowed a cell phone and called his dad.

In a comment on this post people who claim they found the boy said that Christian did not in fact call his dad on a cellphone.

“He was walking down the beach in South Oceanside asking folks which way was Carlsbad,” the commenter said. “Two women asked if he was Christian, he said yes, and a group of about ten of us started waving like crazy to the police helicopter frantically. We waited with the boy for the land police to show up. The boy had never noticed, much less heard the PA system calling out his own name. He really was unaware of any fuss or how much time had passed, he just wanted to walk back home. Police drove him back to Carlsbad.”

Thanks to everyone who commented and cared.

I’m relieved this boy was found but was nervous all night after recieving the message at work and on my landline that a boy was missing. Maybe the reverse 911 calls can let us know he was found!!!!!!!

Thank God the boy was found. I agree with Gina, I wish the sheriff dept could have made a 2nd call, saying that he was found. I heard the message at 8pm and thought he was still missing, been checking for updates until noon the next day.

For the record, the boy did not phone his dad. He was walking down the beach in South Oceanside asking folks which way was Carlsbad. Two women asked if he was Christian, he said yes, and a group of about ten of us started waving like crazy to the police helecopter frantically. We waited with the boy for the land police to show up. The boy had never noticed, much less heard the PA system calling out his own name. He really was unaware of any fuss or how much time had passed, he just wanted to walk back home. Police drove him back to Carlsbad .

My family and I were at the beach and bummed us out with the thought of the worry for the parents and the possibilites of drowning. A combination of riptides and drop in a sand bar could make it very challenging for someone not used to swimming in deep water. Thank God the boy is safe today ,but I hope it reminds parents to always keep an eye out for your children. You can certainly drift quite a bit if no one is paying attention.

Thank God, I was so worried, thinking about it all night and day long. I heard the helicopter and announcement..and was so sick to my stomach thinking about what the parents were feeling…just praying that he would be alright.

Oh, what an answer to prayer! Like the others I heard the alert and thought and prayed for that family all night and all day. Thanks so much for the update and for reporting good news, as well.

We are so happy he was found Ok. we were having dinner outside at Fidels in Carlsbad and the helicopter kept going by with alerts to look for a boy 10 years named Christian. I could barley sleep last night because i couldn’t imagine how horrible it would be to not know what happened. Thank the lord he is back with his family.
