TGIF Jazz July 18: Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca

by The Editors on July 18, 2008

Top Pic Bios

TGIF Jazz in the Park comes a little closer to home as Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca spice things up with innovative music that “combines Latin and African elements from salso to soukous with an occasional merengue or Afro-Portuguese excursion” at Poinsettia Park on July 18.

This Congo-born artist of Angolan ancestry is the embodiment of the Afro-Latin Diaspora which connects back to Mother Africa via the Cuban clave rhythm. Lemvo is truly multi-cultural and equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo.

If you’re deja-vuing, don’t worry. Ricardo played TGIF last year and we wrote nearly the same intro for him. And we’re guessing the show is going to be just even better than it was last year, though we’ve no reason to believe that will be true.

TGIF Jazz July 11: Johnny “V” Vernazza Band

by The Editors on July 11, 2008

Johnnv Bwportrait 0After tonght’s TGIF Jazz In The Park rockin’ blues performance by guitar virtuoso Johnny “V” Vernazza and his band we can all wave good-bye to the Eastern Front and the miles of track homes that surround Stagecoach Park, because this is the last show on the ball field all summer. And it’s going to be a good one.

Johnny V has played guitar since 1963, but it was as a member of the Elvin Bishop Band that he gained the most notoriety. With six albums, endless touring, and the number three hit song in the country (Fooled Around And Fell In Love) Johnny and Elvin basically created the dual lead guitar style that is still a part of the southern rock sound today.

The show runs from 6 to 8 PM at Stagecoach Park. And the dance floor is huge, so don’t forget your dancing shoes.

TGIF Jazz June 27: Janiva Magness

by The Editors on June 25, 2008

MagnivaThe Los Angeles Daily News has described award-winning vocalist Janiva Magness as “a superb, powerhouse R&B singer who delivers blues and soul with show-stopping authority.” And her new album What Love Will Do is reportedly amazing.

Magness reaches heights only hinted at in her previous recordings, interpreting new material written especially for her and songs from Little Milton, Tina Turner, Bill Withers, Al Green, Candi Staton, Dorothy Moore and Marvin Gaye. Her impassioned singing takes each song from deep within her being and projects it out directly into the heart and soul of her audience, making What Love Will Do essential listening for blues, roots, rock and soul music lovers everywhere.

In April 2008, Magness traveled to Iraq and Kuwait co-headlining Bluzapalooza, the first-ever blues concert tour to perform for American troops. And this Friday night (June 27, 2008), at 6 PM Magness will perform in Carlsbad’s Stagecoach Park. Don’t miss it.

TGIF Jazz August 17: Bill Magee Blues Band

by The Editors on August 16, 2007

P9230133A-ThumbAfter a short two-gig stop in the heart of Carlsbadistan TGIF Jazz in the Park is wading back into the suburbs and the cool, breezy beauty of Calavera Hills Park at 2997 Glasgow Drive with the hard-driving blues craftsmanship of the Bill Magee Blues Band. A review on Bill’s website sums it up pretty well.

For those few of you who haven’t had a Bill Magee experience, don’t hesitate to get out there and see this band! This group delivers some of the finest blues you’ll ever hear and it was enough to get music fans of all ages dancing and air guitaring.

We’ve also heard rumors that back in the day Bill (known as Willie then) used to play with a guitarist named Jimmy James. . . Purple Haze indeed. The show starts at 6 PM. Bring a picnic dinner and your dancin’ shoes.

TGIF Jazz August 10: Elliott Caine Quintet

by The Editors on August 5, 2007

Caine-02We’re not saying there will be some Chet Baker channeling going on in the Pine Avenue Park as the Elliott Caine Quintet takes the Carlsbad TGIF Jazz In The Parks stage on August 10, 2007 from 6 to 8 PM, however, there will be some serious Blue Note stylings filling the air. Elliott Caine has performed and/or recorded with numerous groups and individuals, including Wycliff Jean, Beck, and The Beastie Boys, With the Quintet it’s going to be straight ahead jazz.

The repertoire of the group ranges from original melodies from within the group, to songs penned by the “greats”, such as Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, et al; from straight-ahead to Latin to funk grooves and soulful ballads.

We’re starting to think that the entire TGIF series should be held in the Pine Avenue Park, you know, to make it easier for us who live in Carlsbadistan.

Samba PreferredCarlsbad’s TGIF Jazz In the Parks moves to the extra large Poinsettia Park for two stops in July. On July 20th from 6 – 8 PM Samba Mapangala & Orchestra Virunga brings East African pop to Carlsbad.

Their music is an innovative mix of the best rumba and soukous from Congo, with the earthier Kenyan style. Samba composes and sings in both Lingala and Kiswahili. His astounding voice has been described as melting in the ears.

This will probably be the most unusually interesting music of the summer, so don’t miss it. Bon Jovi, it’s not.

PlenalibreNew York City’s The Village Voice says that Plena Libre is “the biggest band to play plena, which is a folkloric music out of Puerto Rico, Plena Libre know the tradition but aren’t afraid to draw upon stuff from outside the genre to keep it fresh.”

We’ll all get to see for ourselves when the 13-member, four-time Grammy nominee band plays the final Stagecoach Park stop of Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in the Parks from 6-8 PM on Friday July 13. The band’s eclectic mix of of latin beats will certainly get the park dancing.
