TGIF Jazz in the Park comes a little closer to home as Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca spice things up with innovative music that “combines Latin and African elements from salso to soukous with an occasional merengue or Afro-Portuguese excursion” at Poinsettia Park on July 18.
This Congo-born artist of Angolan ancestry is the embodiment of the Afro-Latin Diaspora which connects back to Mother Africa via the Cuban clave rhythm. Lemvo is truly multi-cultural and equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo.
If you’re deja-vuing, don’t worry. Ricardo played TGIF last year and we wrote nearly the same intro for him. And we’re guessing the show is going to be just even better than it was last year, though we’ve no reason to believe that will be true.

As much as we hate chain restaurants, there is something about PF Chang’s China Bistro that forces us to drive to Fashion Valley at least once a month for hot and sour soup and vegetarian lettuce wraps.
That’s why we’re shamelessly excited by the fact that the Carlsbad planning commission has approved “a P.F. Chang’s Chinese bistro, a second yet-to-be-determined restaurant and a two-story, 44,400-square-foot complex of upscale shops,” on Paseo del norte next to King’s Fish House across from the Premium Outlet Mall.
Developers had planned to put a hotel on the 7-acre site along Paseo del Norte, but reconsidered because of height and parking limitations, said Peter Aylward, president of the company that owns the land. . . . “Architecturally, I think it’s a good thing for Carlsbad,” Aylward said as he described how the project would look from the east on Paseo del Norte and from the west on Interstate 5.
The project still needs the approval of the City Council, but then, they seem to love taking empty land and filling it with stuff.

According to a story in the North County Times:
In a 4-1 vote, with Councilman Mark Packard absent, the Carlsbad’s City Council decided Tuesday to . . . prohibit smoking at the beach, city parks and trails.
Thanks to the City Council for finally getting on the program. The ban could go into effect in 30 days. So smokers: get ready to kiss your butts goodbye.

Carlsbad’s Aaron Goldberg, 22, is “making a loud statement at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Murphy Creek,” according to a story in the Denver Post.
The former San Diego State Aztec won the two-day stroke play qualifying for the tournament, shooting a 4-under 67 Tuesday to finish 10-under entering today’s first day of match play. That was one shot better than Rickie Fowler of Murietta, Calif., and three shots in front of Pueblo’s Zach Zaremba.
Next stop for Goldbert, the U.S. Amateur Championships and then Aaron is going pro.

Carlsbad soccer player Ryan Guy, 23, is reportedly “making a name for himself in the Irish Premier Division,” according to a story on Yanks Abroad.
Guy has shown a nose for the goal, bagging 4 goals already this season. The 23 year old debuted in April of 2007 for the Irish club, after a professional stint with the Southern California Fusion of the National Professional Soccer League, the US’ fourth tier.
He’s also getting used to living in Ireland.
“It’s hard for me to believe I’ve been here a year and a half already. It was rough and tumble, frustrating to say the least for the first five months or so when I was going through the work permit process and unable to get on the pitch. When it did finally go through however, I was fortunate to put in good performances when questions were asked of me.

In another shocking reminder of just how long these last six months of the Bush presidency are going to be, George W. today lifted the executive ban on offshore drilling.
With this action, the executive branch’s restrictions on this exploration have been cleared away. This means that the only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action from the U.S. Congress,” Mr. Bush told reporters at the White House.
The American people? How can anyone take this seriously. It’s not the American people who will benefit from the rape of America’s coastlines, it’s the Bush family and friends oil business. Luckily, lifting the executive order means nothing until congress agrees.
That didn’t stop US Representative Darrell Issa (R-Vista) from jumping onboard, in a statement released to the North County Times:
“This decision is a step in the right direction for American consumers and our economy, but a defeat for the environmental lobby that has spent tens of millions of dollars in Washington over the years to place our nation’s energy reserves off-limits,” Issa said in a written statement.
Note to the oblivious: the solution is not more drilling, the solution is less consumption. Is this really that difficult to understand?

We’ve always thought of them as pelican perches, but those floats in the Agua Hedionda lagoon are actually part of Carlsbad Aquafarm’s growing “multimillion-dollar” investment which now include abalone tanks, according to recent Associated Press story.
In a process that has taken years to complete, microscopic abalone larvae have finally grown into fist-sized mollusks that can fetch $30 a pound from top-shelf restaurants and other buyers.
“It’s very slow, growing abalone. You spend two or three years of work until you have something large enough to sell,” said Matt Steinke, a manager at Carlsbad Aquafarm.
We’re glad to know the business is working. And if The French Laundry is cooking them, they must be good.

The Carlsbad City Council is wasting no time making changes after becoming a charter city. In June, the City Council changed the State requirements for what makes a quorum at Council meetings, making it much easier for them to vote on anything. Now, according to a story in the North County Times, they are considering no longer “paying union-scale wages for large construction projects” and changing the way they purchase office supplies.
City officials have said recently that the proposed purchasing changes could save Carlsbad millions of dollars, but the proposal is likely to be opposed by construction union members. In the past, union advocates have said that failing to follow the state’s prevailing requirement will hurt local families.
It seems to us like the State guidelines are there for some very good reasons, and for the local City Council to just change them to save a little money, or in the case of the office supplies, make it easier to spend money without getting “formal price quotes” just doesn’t seem responsible.

Two Orange County men ages 34 and 38 were arrested in Carlsbad on Friday, July 11, 2008 for allegedly using Craigslist to rent out houses that they did not own.
According to police, the men entered at least two vacant Carlsbad homes that were in foreclosure and then listed them for rent on the Web site Craigslist. . . . They collected possibly thousands of dollars in security deposits and rent from several people, according to paperwork that officers found on the men.
Luckily, a woman who had been burned by the men posted a warning on Craiglist and another renter who had scheduled a meeting with them saw the warning and called police who casually attended the meeting, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The men were “booked on suspicion of fraud, burglary and illegal use of the Internet. Bail was set at $300,000 each.”
