While we may not be so sure about “The Triathlon of a New Generation” a.k.a. the Ultimate Boarder 2008, (contest in which athletes compete in snowboarding, surfing, and skateboarding with combined scoring), we are absolutely sure that the right guy won.
Carlsbadistan’s Aaron Astorga (you may have seen him driving around town in the Hurley sprinter van) edged out pro snowboarder and ESPN commentator Todd Richards and rolled away with a check for $30,000.
It was an amazing event and everyone had a great time” said Ultimate Boarder champion, Aaron Astorga. “The contest organizers did an unbelievable job of bringing all of the surfers, skaters and snowboarders together and I know a lot of us are already looking forward to next year’s contest.”
Aaron, thanks for showing the world that Carlsbadistan remains action sports central. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

Thanks to a crew of volunteers Carlsbad’s Hosp Grove now has 200 more trees as part of its Centennial Celebration, according to a Leigh Ann Dewey story in the North County Times.
The celebration offered the community a chance to observe the birthday of the grove, planted 100 years ago by F.P. Hosp & Partners, which hoped to sell the wood to the Santa Fe Railroad for railroad ties. The wood proved too brittle, so the trees remained. Through a vote of residents in 1987, 53 acres of the grove were acquired by the city of Carlsbad and the entire 74 acres — bordered by Hosp Way, Marron Road, and Jefferson and Monroe streets, became parkland and open space.

Moments after landing at Carlsbad/Palomar airport on Saturday just after 10AM a small jet, “owned by California Natural Products,” skidded off the runway. There were four people aboard and none were injured according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
It is unclear what caused the Cessna Citation to veer off the side of the runway after landing, said Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Students in Doug Green’s broadcast journalism class at Carlsbad High made a Holocaust pilgrimage to Germany’s Dachau prison camp to make a documentary film.
Taking turns with three high-definition video cameras, the students captured about 25 hours of footage, including their own thoughts about the Holocaust. . . .Students will weave footage from Dachau with their interviews to produce a 45-minute documentary called “Never Again,” to be released on DVD this fall.
We’re sure this film will be interesting, however, we can say that Holocaust documentaries aren’t something we look forward to seeing.

We mentioned this earlier this week and then forgot to go grab some photos. Luckily, the North County Times‘ Jamie Scot Lytle was there to photographically document the protest.
“We cannot allow our governor, our state senators or our assemblymen to destroy California schools,” said John Roach, superintendent of the Carlsbad Unified School District. “Our voices are together on this issue.”
According to the story “hundreds of people” were out on the overpasses. In Carlsbadistan people gathered on Los Flores and Poinsettia overpasses. Carlsbadcrawl.com has photos as well. Check them out.

The seminal rock band Queen only captured one of their concerts on film. And that was in November of 1981 when Under Pressure was topping charts in the UK and stopped off in Montreal Canada on the way home from Japan.
Now, Queen fans will get to relive (or in our case, see for the first time) that concert in it’s “digitally restored” and “newly mixed and mastered in DTS Surround Sound” glory on Monday night, April 28, 2008 at the La Costa 6 Cinemas in a “pure digital” presentation of Queen & Deep Purple.
Always a great live band, with arguable the greatest frontman of all time in Freddie Mercury, they excelled themselves with the cameras rolling.
It’s one night only and tickets are $10. Having never seen Queen, we think this might be the next best thing, and no one is required to sit through Deep Purple.

The Carlsbad Recreation Department’s Battle of the Bands winners, The Funky Kicks got the Rock The Library concert series rolling tonight at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad Library on Dove Lane. We’ve seen their stickers showing up all over Carlsbadistan, so we thought we should go check them out.
An enthusiastic crown of more than 100 fans showed up to hear the local band groove out their set of original and cover songs. We were impressed. The band plays tight, clean, funky rock that get heads bouncing.
Those who didn’t get a change to catch the library show can see the band this weekend. Gregory Kellogg, the band’s lead singer, invited everyone to come here them play this weekend. “We’re playing on Saturday at the Calavera Hills Park. You know where that is right?” he said. “And then on Sunday we’re playing at the Oceanside Pier for the 420 Remix.”

The north-bound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway came to a near standstill this evening (April 17, 2008) at approximately 6:30 PM after a two-car collision at the corner of Carlsbad Boulevard [aka PCH] and Juniper Avenue.
Apparently, the driver of a white Ford Ranger truck turned left from the south-bound turn lane directly into the front left quarter panel of a while Chevrolet Impala as it travelled north on Carlsbad Boulevard.
“I guess the driver of the truck just thought she could make it,” said one witness. “I was over on the seawall standing by my truck and heard the whole thing. You can’t believe how loud it was.”
Though the Impala’s driver-side airbag deployed (breaking the car’s front windshield) there were no injuries in either car.
