Wal-Mart Is Coming To Town

by The Editors on July 20, 2007

Walmart Logo2Wal-Mart has just purchased a 17-arce site at the corner of College Blvd and El Camino Real where it hopes to build “its most upscale store in the nation,” (which isn’t saying much) according to story in the North County Times.

It will be an absolute paradigm shift,” said Wal-Mart spokesman Aaron Rios in an interview Thursday evening. . . Wal-Mart, which has long sought entry into Carlsbad, recognizes that if it succeeds in building a store in the affluent, carefully planned community, it could not be a typical “big box” store, Rios said.

Upscale? We were trying to think of something funny to say about an upscale Wal-Mart, but the truth is. . . Wal-Mart sucks. And there’s really nothing funny about that.

Acura Classic Players Dropping Like Flies

by The Editors on July 20, 2007

AcuraclassiclogoThe world women’s tennis number one seed Justine Henin withdrew from the Acura Classic yesterday saying that she has injured her wrist. Her website says she is “on a highly deserved vacation of rest and relaxation.” Henin is the fourth top 10 player to drop out of the La Costa Resort & Spa’s final WTA hurrah.

Eight of the top 10 players on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour were in the field when the Acura’s entry list was announced, with Henin atop this list. Of the eight, only four now can be considered likely participants in the $1.34 million event July 28-Aug. 5 at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

But no worries. The Acura Classic is still a great time no matter who is missing.

Following The Principals at Calavera and Magnolia

by The Editors on July 20, 2007

When Calavera Hills Middle School principal Eric Trogden left his job unexpectedly last week to pursue a career as a financial analyst the district decided to move assistant principal Catina Hancock into the job.

Hancock, 33, brings experience as a classroom teacher at Jefferson Elementary School and assistant principal at Calavera Hills Elementary School, Calavera Hills Middle School and Aviara Oaks Middle School to her leadership role as principal, said Torrie Norton, assistant superintendent of personnel.

Hancock was apparently in the running for the job of Magnolia Elementary, however, when Trogden left the trustees moved her up and found Ron Hess, a principal from Twentynine Palms, to come in off the desert and head Magnolia until it closes.

Magnolia’s new principal, comes to Carlsbad from the high desert community of Twentynine Palms, where he served four years as principal at Joshua Tree Elementary School in the Morongo Unified School District. The New York native, a 28-year veteran of education, served in schools in Virginia and Texas before moving to California five years ago. He worked in the Murrieta Unified School District as principal of Alta Murrieta Elementary School for a year before moving to the desert.

Thursday’s Carlsbad Traffic Sting

by The Editors on July 20, 2007

It seemed like Carlsbad Police where everywhere yesterday: hiding behind trees, parking in secret spots, waving radar guns attached to their motorcycles. Well, it was all part of a “multi-agency traffic enforcement operation” according to the North County Times.

Officers from the Carlsbad, Escondido and Oceanside police departments, the county Sheriff’s Department and a number of other agencies participated in the detail, which was held between 7 and 11:30 a.m. at about 20 locations throughout the city, police spokeswoman Lynn Diamond said. . . The locations targeted, including spots on Carlsbad Boulevard, Palomar Airport Road and La Costa Avenue, were chosen because they are “either problem (areas) we’re seeing on a regular basis or the community ID’d them as significant problems,” Diamond said.

Talk about a crack-down. All told there was one felony warrant arrest, 250 citations issued, and 16 cars were towed away because the drivers were unlicensed.

Orange 21 May Buy No Fear Retail Stores

by The Editors on July 19, 2007

In a recent press release Carlsbad-based Orange 21 (the parent company of Spy Optic) has announced that it is in discussions with Carlsbad-based No Fear Inc. regarding the purchase of 40 No Fear retail stores. But there is one little glitch: Mark Simo, the Chairman and CEO of Orange 21 is also the founder, former CEO, a director, and stockholder of No Fear, so:

As a result of Mr. Simo’s position, the board of directors of Orange 21 established the Special Committee comprised entirely of independent directors to evaluate and recommend a course of action with respect to the possible strategic transaction.

Anyone want to take any bets on what course of action will be recommended by this “special committee?”

Samba PreferredCarlsbad’s TGIF Jazz In the Parks moves to the extra large Poinsettia Park for two stops in July. On July 20th from 6 – 8 PM Samba Mapangala & Orchestra Virunga brings East African pop to Carlsbad.

Their music is an innovative mix of the best rumba and soukous from Congo, with the earthier Kenyan style. Samba composes and sings in both Lingala and Kiswahili. His astounding voice has been described as melting in the ears.

This will probably be the most unusually interesting music of the summer, so don’t miss it. Bon Jovi, it’s not.

These results are apparently beating the street.

Carlsbad After Charter Cityhood?

by The Editors on July 19, 2007

According to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune the Carlsbad City Council is asking staff to continue investigating the pros and cons of becoming a “charter city.”

Carlsbad is currently a general-law city, meaning it gets its powers from state laws and the Legislature. A charter city derives its powers directly from the state constitution, giving it broader powers.

Is more power a good thing?

A Horse and His Trainer at Opening Day

by The Editors on July 19, 2007

Uniontrib 20070719 Images Open280It was opening day where the turf meets the surf in old Del Mar yesterday, and hordes of Carlsbadistanians skipped work to be down on the rail dressed up and betting. The San Diego Union-Tribune caught two of them dressed up as a horse and his trainer.

Carlsbad residents Jim Meade (left) and Larry Irwin skipped the hats and instead donned masks to portray a trainer and his horse yesterday at the opening day of racing season at Del Mar. The two stayed in character much of the day, with Meade often leading Irwin around.”
