While announcements of hotels featuring Wi-Fi wireless is beginning to remind us of the old motel signs that advertised, “FREE Color TV,” it is good to know when planning a Carlsbad timeshare vacation that Grand Pacific Resorts has signed a deal with 5G Wireless to provide wireless Internet service it all of its resorts.
That means the Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort, Carlsbad Seapoint Resort, and the currently under construction Sheraton Carlsbad Resort will have solid wireless Internet coverage all over their grounds. So bring your laptops and annoy your family by working on your vacation. . . because now you can.

Looking for some amazingly designed modern outdoor furniture? Our favorite Carlsbad furniture company, Maku Furnishings is having a warehouse sale Friday July 13 at their headquarters just off Palomar Airport Road at 2105 Camino Vida Roble Suite G. Here’s what Johnny West says:
This sale will feature tradeshow samples and very minor scratch and dent models with an opportunity to own a piece of Maku Furniture for pennies on the dollar. We’re talking Lounge Chairs that retail at $829 will be on sale for $375, Benches from $275, Dining Tables from $750, and Coffee tables from $275 plus much more. We need to make some room in the warehouse for the next 2 containers that will be arriving later this month.
He also mentioned that product is limited and it will go first come first served. Don’t say you weren’t warned and please remember to tell them Carlsbadistan sent you.

In the 2007/2008 Carlsbad City Budget that was approved on June 26 the city has added 21 new positions and a $50-million pool at Alga Norte Park (future home of Carlsbad’s new skatepark). We’ll get four new police officer (thanks), and one new fireman (is that all?) We can also look forward to a 9.1 percent increase in water rates and 6.35 positions cut at the library, according to The Coast News.
The theme of the budget is building a sustainable community through effectively managing today’s resources. We’re ensuring that we have money, and setting aside money for the future, and living within our means,” said Lisa Irvine, finance director for Carlsbad.
The budget includes $182.3 million for capital improvements and $186.2 million for operations. Anyone with insights into these numbers is encouraged to explain them in the comments section.

MaxLinear, Inc., a Carlsbad-based technology company which develops radio frequency systems-on-a-chip has announced that they have partnered with UMC to produce the world’s smallest silicon tuner produced to date for mobile TV applications.
We are very excited about our cooperation with UMC as we were able to produce the MxL7001 on CMOS rather than in SiGe, an industry breakthrough,” noted Kishore Seendripu, MaxLinear’s CEO and president.
We have no idea what this really means, but if it brings broadcast TV to our cellphones, well, that’s pretty cool.

Warning: this is not one of the events that we would normally point out (not that there is anything wrong with it).
On July 14, 2007 the Mopar Club of San Diego is presenting the All American Car Show IX at the Westfield Plaza Camino Real parking lot on Saturday July 14th.
For perspective, the last car show we attended was in 1981 and we only went because a Penthouse Pet was signing autographs. Unfortunately, there are no Pets on this show’s bill, but you can “meet local radio celebrity” and former San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock along with former WWE wrestler/actor Bill Goldberg. What a team, huh?

Carlsbad’s newest action sports neighbor, Reef, has finally jumped on the green marketing bandwagon, er, no, scratch that. . . they’ve decided they’d like to “leave a smaller footprint on the Earth” according to a story in the San Diego Business Journal.
. . . the company plans to give back to the environment while introducing new eco-friendly products and emphasizing eco-friendly business practices. Marketing Vice President Kevin Flanagan said the business launched its three-tiered plan as part of its new campaign.
Go green. . .

A play being featured in this summer’s Toronto Fringe Festival (July 4-15, 2007) features Carlsbad’s Legoland as the central quest in a story about “two bizarre teenaged siblings with a completely insane story to tell about drug trafficking and popstars. . . and a wild journey across the United States,” according to the blog the Torontoist.
Both actors are note-perfect in this brilliantly written, flawlessly directed tour-de-force. There is actually no level on which it disappoints, and the packed house was in stitches for the entire hour. Go see it already!
We’d love to hear what they have to say about our favorite local theme park. But unfortunately, we’re not headed to Toronto Canada in the next week. Even more interesting would be how Legoland’s legal team feels about their trademark being used as the title of a play. Anyone?

Not surprisingly, the Topps Co. today has recommended that it’s shareholders reject Upper Deck’s proposal to buy the company saying the Carlsbad-based trading card manufacturer’s “proposal was not in the best interests of the shareholders.
Topps said Monday that it plans to continue talks with Upper Deck to see if a consensual deal that is superior to the pending transaction with Tornante Co. [headed by former Disney boss Michael Eisner] and Chicago-based Madison Dearborn Partners LLC can be reached.
