Fish & Game Building Fences In Carlsbad

At first glance it would appear that the California Department of Fish & Game would like people to stop using all the trails in the Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Preserve just south of the Lake Calavera Trails system.

In the past month fences have gone up all over the once beautiful hiking terrain making it nearly impossible to get anywhere without tromping through the bushes. Oddly, few of the fences connect to anything nor block any areas off. Most (like this one) simply stretch across a trail and extend a few yards into the foliage on either side making a dangerous situation for mountain bikers who are used to riding these trails unchecked.

The fences are part of a plan by California Fish & Game to protect the coastal sage scrub, which is prime habitat for the threatened California Gnatcatcher and to generally protect the area from getting destroyed. The project is being financed by a grant from the San Diego Association of Governments, according to California Fish & Game Biologist Warren Wong.

Wong says there is a logic to the way the fences have been scattered through the preserve. “We’ve tried to situate them in a way that they tie in with the vegetation,” Wong said. “If we wanted to close an area we would have to fence off the entire area with very sturdy poles. That’s not financially possible. The costs would be astronomical.”

The reason there is a problem with the trails seems to be more an issue of communication. The webpage dedicated to the Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Preserve is little help. It features nothing more than a map that shows where the preserve is located, a phone number, and some icons suggesting hiking and birdwatching are allowed. We’ve never seen any signs or announcements on site explaining who is allowed to use the trails and/or which trails are officially open. But, apparently, that’s not because they haven’t been posted. “Any signs that we put up in that the area pretty quickly get ripped down,” Wong said.

The good news is that the fences may not have to be permanent. “As long as they do their job, then we can take them down,” he says.

As for the mountain biking, it’s never been allowed in the area anyway. But Wong says he would like to work with mountain bikers. “I’d really like to meet mountain bikers and see if they have ideas about trails,” he says. “We can look. I have rules that I am bound by, but there may be places in this area that could be considered an access road.”

Until then, just know that if you’re riding the trails south and east of the water tank, be careful. There are fences everywhere.

Tony Hawk To Light Lego Christmas Tree

by The Editors on November 28, 2011

Img300 TonyhawkCarlsbadistan’s most famous action sports star Tony Hawk will flip the switch (not a skateboard trick) tonight (Monday, November 28, 2011) at Legoland to help kick off the outrageously expensive theme park’s annual Holiday Celebration.

Hawk, father of four and life-long Ambassador Pass Member to LEGOLAND, launched the Tony Hawk Foundation in 2002 with the goal to increase the number of safe, legal skate parks for youth in low-income communities across the U.S. To date, the Tony Hawk Foundation has helped fund 493 public skateboard parks in these communities, which now service 3.5-million youth annually.

We’d love to be there tonight, however, we’re saving our $300 for a trip to Disneyland. Follow the jump for more details. [click to continue…]

Weed And 3 Mexicans Seized At Tamarack

by The Editors on November 15, 2011

Panga Weed2

Carlsbadistan residents on their way to work down the coast this morning got a nice look at officials attempting to remove the drug-loaded panga that came ashore near the Tamarack Jetty just after midnight this morning (Tuesday, November 15, 2011), according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

U.S. Border Patrol agents spotted the 28-foot boat about 1:30 a.m. and watched it come ashore between Tamarack Avenue and Cannon Road, Agent Michael Jimenez said. . . Two men were on the boat, and one was sitting in an awaiting vehicle when they were taken into custody, Jimenez said.

Apparently the three Mexican nationals over shot their normal docking spot at Ponto Landing and then got stuck in the sand.

Carlsbad Education Foundations Raises $350,000

by The Editors on November 4, 2011

Cef-LogoAs much as we’d like to think that the taxes we pay to the State of California could support a reasonable public school system, here in Carlsbad that just isn’t the case. In fact, the Carlsbad Unified School District is headed into an $11 million deficit for the 2012-13 school year. That’s why the work of the Carlsbad Education Foundation is so important to the students in Carlsbad. On November 1, 2011 the CEF kicked off their annual fund drive.

Here’s what they did with the money this year:

Carlsbad Educational Foundation announces the release of $350,000 in funds to assist 15 key initiatives that support students within the Carlsbad Unified School District during the 2011-2012 school year. Among the initiatives are essential music, science and special programs that impact 11,000 students throughout the district.

For more information on what the CEF is doing in Carlsbad and how you can help, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
