Coastal Commission Thumbs Up Desal Application

by The Editors on August 11, 2007

According to a story in the Coast News the California Coastal Commission has approved Poseidon Resources fifth application for its planned desalination plant in the lagoon next to the Encina Power Plant.

“This is precisely what we’ve been hoping to accomplish, to get to a point when we could get a hearing,” said Peter MacLaggan, senior vice president for Poseidon. “It’s an important milestone, but it’s just a procedural step. We need to focus on preparing for the hearing.”

The approval is not for the plant itself, but for an application to present a plan to the Coastal Commission in mid November 2007. In other words, Poseidon Resources has been given permission to ask permission.

The Chargers Express Carlsbad Bus Stops

by The Editors on August 11, 2007

If driving to Chargers games seems a daunting task this season, don’t worry: you can ride the bus to and from Qualcomm for just $12 for adults and $4 for kids under 12.

The bus leaves Westfield Shoppingtown Plaza Camino Real two hours before game time, the park-and-ride lot at I-5 and La Costa Avenue one hour and 40 minutes before game time.

Tomorrow’s game against the Seattle Seahawks starts at 5 PM. Why drive and drink when you can ride with the fans.

Barbarians At The Crossings

by The Editors on August 11, 2007

Thecrossings

After two separate days of “locals only” play, The Crossings-at-Carlsbad is finally open to the general public. We were planning on getting up early this morning and driving out to do some coverage on the first people to play the course, however, after last night’s TGIF Jazz in the Park we just weren’t feeling it.

We called to check on when a “visiting guest” could get on the course and the first available bookable tee-time was on Sunday August 19th. Apparently, this course is being pretty well-received.

Elliot Caine Quintet Lulls Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on August 10, 2007

Elliotcaine

Show us a sunny, blue-sky evening in Carlsbadistan and we’ll show you winter. We don’t know if it was the overcast ummer skies, the second week in this venue, or the smooth jazz stylings of Elliot Caine and his horn, but tonight in the Pine Avenue Park things were perfectly snoozy. The crowd was happy, yet subdued, and the only place with much action was in the play structures on stage left where all our kids were jamming.

It’s nice when TGIF Jazz in the Park comes to Carlsbadistan. Gone are the suburban Stagecoach Park crowds, the parking hassles, and instead real Carlsbad out for an evening of cool jazz in the park. . . even if the sky was clouded over. Follow the link for the rest of the photos.

Callaway Vs. Taylormade: The Battle Royale

by The Editors on August 10, 2007

According to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune Callaway has filed lawsuits in federal court in Texas and San Diego claiming that “TaylorMade, a division of Adidas also based in Carlsbad, was violating two golf ball patents and one dealing with an iron club.” Callaway declined to comment, however, Taylormade had no problem.

Scott Leightman, a spokesman for TaylorMade, said several of Callaway’s current drivers, a key market for each company, were infringing on his company’s patents. “There is more to the dispute than their allegations, and we’ll take appropriate measures to protect our patented technologies,” he said.

As we’ve learned from the tech industry: lawsuits are simply forms of negotiation.

Art In The Village 2007

by The Editors on August 9, 2007

PeopleOn Sunday August 12, the Village of Carlsbad will be transformed into a sea of pop-up tents filled with items that stretch the definition of the word “art” to all knew lengths as Kennedy Street Faire Consultants brings in their annual Art in the Village street fair to Carlsbadistan.

We’re on the lookout for our favorite piece of art: a pastel blue, howling, coyote doorstop with a macramé tail. Let us know if you see one.

Riding The Bubble: A Real Estate Blog

by The Editors on August 9, 2007

When local Realtors are given nicknames like Air-Monica® and Super-Jenae® you know some comically bitter blogging is going on. Bubbletracking claims to provide “comprehensive inventory data” for Western US real estate markets, but what it serves up is scathingly caustic reviews of recent real estate transactions from all over the west.

Here are a couple recent posts regarding Carlsbad real estate: The Path to the Dark Side and More Funny Business from Super-Jenae® and friends.

The Crossing’s Future

by The Editors on August 9, 2007

1 01 408 7 07ASure Carlsbad has been waiting for a municipal golf course for 17 years, and yes, there is a lot of excitement: the two days of locals only golf scheduled for this weekend sold out in 20 minutes. The question the North County Times is asking is: then what? What happens after the honeymoon is over and The Crossings-at-Carlsbad is just one more Southern California golf course?

“Just because a new course opens up doesn’t mean that 35,000 more rounds (a year) are being played,” said John McNair, vice president of operations for JC Golf, which manages nine courses in San Diego and Temecula, including The Crossings’ neighbor, Encinitas Ranch, and inland courses such as Twin Oaks in San Marcos, the Rancho Bernardo Inn and the par-3 Reidy Creek in Escondido. “The Crossings is going to take a chunk from everyone.”

In an industry that’s currently not growing it will be interesting for everyone. Maybe this will force a price war at local courses. Then we all win.
