She was sippin’ water and suckin’ throat lozenges most of the set, but that didn’t keep blues diva Javina Magness and her band from rocking the crowd all the way to the outfield at Stagecoach Park last night, for concert two of Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in The Park 2008.
We didn’t catch the first bit of Magness’ show because, as usual when we venture that far into Carlsbad’s Eastern Front, we got lost. From the looks on the faces of the packed baseball field everyone was enjoying Javina’s efforts.
The new baseball diamond venue may lack a little of the flavor of the old location, but it sure makes it easy for all the picnickers. And that new jumbo-sized dance floor seemed to be extremely popular.

The Los Angeles Daily News has described award-winning vocalist Janiva Magness as “a superb, powerhouse R&B singer who delivers blues and soul with show-stopping authority.” And her new album What Love Will Do is reportedly amazing.
Magness reaches heights only hinted at in her previous recordings, interpreting new material written especially for her and songs from Little Milton, Tina Turner, Bill Withers, Al Green, Candi Staton, Dorothy Moore and Marvin Gaye. Her impassioned singing takes each song from deep within her being and projects it out directly into the heart and soul of her audience, making What Love Will Do essential listening for blues, roots, rock and soul music lovers everywhere.
In April 2008, Magness traveled to Iraq and Kuwait co-headlining Bluzapalooza, the first-ever blues concert tour to perform for American troops. And this Friday night (June 27, 2008), at 6 PM Magness will perform in Carlsbad’s Stagecoach Park. Don’t miss it.

Amazing how this stuff can sneak up on us. Tonight (June 20, 2008) from 6 to 8 PM, on ball field number 1 of Stagecoach Park “contemporary blues” singer Debbie Davies launches the new summer season of Carlsbad’s Jazz in The Park.
Davies cut her teeth playing in blues and rock ‘n roll bands in the San Francisco Bay area before returning to Los Angeles in 1984, where she landed the lead guitar spot in Maggie Mayall and the Cadillacs, an all-female band led by wife of British blues pioneer, John Mayall. . . . Since 1993, Debbie has produced nine solo recordings and two collaborative CD’s, one with guitarists Tab Benoit and Kenny Neal, and another with guitarists Anson Funderburgh and Otis Grand. . . . in 1997 [Davies] won the award for Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist. She is nominated yet again in this category for 2008.
Pack up the picnic and roll out to Stagecoach for an evening of fine blues guitar in a big park.

Carlsbadistan’s own “thrash/metal” band Keaper has been selected as one of the final six bands to compete in Volcom Entertainment‘s (the music label owned by the clothing company) 2008 Southern California High School Band Joust on June 28, 2008 at the Volcom Skatepark at 1660 Placentia Ave. Costa Mesa, CA.
All six bands that are invited to compete at the Band Joust will get a sweet gift packy from Volcom… The Grand Prize winning band will receive: Brand new ESP guitars and bass for the whole band, a live performance at the Damn Am skate contest at Volcom, private music lessons for one month ($500 value, courtesy of themusicfactoryoc.com), tickets for the band to go see Motörhead perform in Orange County, a Volcom clothing pack & Volcom Entertainment music pack for each member.
From the stuff we’ve heard on Keaper’s myspace page we’re thinking they’re going to slay the competition.

The City of Carlsbad’s TGIF: Jazz In The Park Series has mostly left Carlsbadistan for the 2008 season which is kind of a bummer (no more walking to the shows), but truthfully, we don’t need those inland crowds cluttering up our streets anyway.
This year the 10 events shared among Stagecoach Park, Poinsettia Park, and Calavera Hills Park. The first concert is on Friday June 20 with the Debbie Davies Band at Stagecoach Park.
Follow the jump for all the other details and we will keep you posted all summer long.

NAMM, the 107-year-old Carlsbad-based music trade association has created their own version of American Idol for people who’ve always wanted to make music, but never pursued their dream. It’s call the ‘Say You Wanna Play‘ contest and it’s being hosted on YouTube.
The contest is part of NAMM’s first annual National ‘Wanna Play Music Week,’ May 5-9, along with an array of activities to raise public awareness about the vital role that music and music education play in people’s lives, and how even recreational music making can directly affect the health and social well-being of people in all stages of life. The weeklong event is part of the association’s national ‘Wanna Play?’ public awareness campaign created to communicate the benefits of playing music to people of all ages.
