Tip Top Meats is a Carlsbadistan institution. And owner John Haedrich, 81, is the reason for that. His friendly, authentic charm has made him popular with visitors from around the world.
We have family from Idaho who won’t eat anywhere else. “Why would we,” they say. “We love Big John and like supporting his business.”
How can we argue with that? Last Friday the Voice of San Diego ran an interview with Her Haedrich and we learned even more about his competitive nature.
I am the competition. I was a boxer, OK. You go in the ring. You know … your opponent is well-prepared to come at you, you better let him have it. That’s what I do right now. . . Come on, show me what you can do. I have better prices, better variety, better location, better help, better situation, period. They can’t compete. Who can compete with me? Nobody can. They have a better price over there. But people still come here to buy my steaks.
Click the link for the rest of the interview and then stop by Tip Top for a slab at Carlsbadistan’s best European market and maybe a word or two with a man who has eaten 10 tons of meat.

Le Passage, Carlsbadistan’s French Bistro, has created a great deal in celebration of Carlsbad Restaurant Week (May 18 through May 22, 2010). Here’s what they say:
We are offering a 3 course meal for $30.00! You may select an appetizer, main course and dessert from our price fixe menu for the week. Some menu item examples include our Coq Au Vin, Duck Breast with Cherry Sauce, Chef’s Fish Selection or Steak Au Poivre! This special is for dinner only. We also will be offering our regular menu as well!
This would be the perfect reason to try Le Passage for the first time, or again.

Carlsbadistan’s world famous Rubio’s Fish Taco restaurants has agreed to be purchased by a Greenwich, Connecticut based private equity firm called Mill Road Capital, according to a Bradley Fikes story in the North County Times.
If the deal goes through, Rubio’s stockholders will get $8.70 per share. That’s about 45 percent more than the closing price on Oct. 14, just before Rubio’s disclosed an unsolicited offer, the company said. . . Rubio’s board declined that particular offer from a group headed by Los Angeles-based investor Alex Meruelo. But Rubio’s said it was open to receiving other offers. . . Shares closed Monday after the sale announcement at $8.50 each, up 84 cents from Friday’s close of $7.66.
Rubio’s founder Ralph Rubio says he and the management team will be staying on with the company. “They like what we’re doing, they appreciate the management team, and the results we’ve had, so the management team stays on in our current roles,” Rubio said.
Then again that’s what the new owners always say, isn’t it?

On Monday January 18, 2010 Carlsbadistan’s Xtreme Yogurt will be giving away free yogurt at their Bressi Ranch location (2659 Gateway Rd., Suite D107) from 2 PM till 6 PM as a way of thanking the community for their support in Xtreme’s work with the Toys For Tots Foundation.
Xtreme Frozen Yogurt (XFY) challenged the community to raise 150 toys for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. To celebrate exceeding the goal and thank the community for stepping up to give back, XFY is throwing a mega-bash topped with free frozen yogurt. In addition to frozen yogurt with a multitude of toppings, there will be music and appearances by professional extreme athletes – including X Games champion skateboarder Bucky Lasek and MMA fighter Corey Grant.
There really is no better price than free.

For weeks we’ve been peeking in the windows of the old Sushi on The Rock location at the Forum At Carlsbad because we knew something good was coming. Today, it’s finally here. The Counter, a build your own custom burger joint that people seem to rave about opened today (December 14, 2009) with 312,120 possible burger combinations.
Founded in 2003 by restaurant industry veteran Jeff Weinstein, Culver City, Calif.-based The Counter is the 21st-century equivalent to the classic burger joint, offering a fresh, unconventional approach to the American tradition of creating the ultimate premium burger. Since opening its original Santa Monica location, The Counter quickly gained national acclaim. In July 2005, GQ magazine columnist Alan Richman named The Counter’s “Build Your Own Burger” to his list of the best burgers in America and “The Oprah Winfrey Show” featured the GQ list shortly thereafter in a segment entitled “20 Burgers You Must Eat Before you Die.”
The Counter, which has 23 locations, isn’t just for the kids. The Forum restaurant includes a new lounge area that features more adult fare like “Fried Goat Cheese Sandwiches, Portobello Sandwiches, Mini Grilled Cheese & Bacon Sandwiches and spiked milkshakes” for the mommies and daddies. We haven’t been in yet, but we’re looking forward to it.

One of our favorite San Diego burger joints Hodad’s is apparently coming to Carlsbadistan’s Village Faire at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard, according to leasing information obtained on The Free Library.com.
Hodad’s leased 1,900 square feet of retail space for $217,738 for five years at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, Suite 202, in Carlsbad.
Suite 202 is the current location of Mr. Peabody’s. No shirt. No shoes. No problem. Damn. Our mouths are already watering. Should we get in line now?

Something about Thai food invades our psyche and makes us crave Panang Curry and Tom Kah Gai soup to no end. After returning to Carlsbadistan from living in the northwest (just blocks from the best Thai food we’ve ever tasted) our search for something to fill the void was on.
This wasn’t a rational search—no. It was a coconut milk, peanut sauce, phad thai, spring rolled filled one that took us all over San Diego county. Recommendations from friends had us hitting places in the Gaslamp, Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Oceanside, and beyond. When the gastronomic adventure was over, we were relieved to discover that the best Thai food in San Diego County lay right here at home: Lotus Thai Bistro.

Fans of Spirito’s Restaurant & Pizzeria (formerly in the Village Faire) can rejoice as the restaurant (and it’s delicious menu) have returned to Carlsbad. In January Mike Spirto opened the restaurant in the Von’s Shopping Plaza at 2560 El Camino Real next to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.
Currently Spirito’s is running on word of mouth as Mike and his team get the place going, but from what we saw, the locals are glad they’re back. It’s mostly take-out with a few tables inside for dine in, but there is plenty of food, reasonable prices, nice people. A local tradition that’s good to have back.

According to a story in San Diego City Beat Vigilucci’s is celebrating 15 years in the restaurant business by taking 15 percent off the total tab at all of their restaurants including Vigilucci’s Cucina Italiana at 2943 State St. and Vigilucci’s Seafood and Steakhouse at 3878 Carlsbad Blvd. from January 15-30, 2009.
Us? We’ll hit them up on State Street. Of all the Italian restaurants in North County (and they seem to be everywhere) Vigilucci’s Cucina Italiana is far and away the nicest of them all.
