North Village Goes Up With Seagrove

by The Editors on October 27, 2015

SeagroveJust the other day we noticed the modern townhomes that seemed to have sprouted up overnight at the North end of State Street in the village of Carlsbad and they look really nice. The 47-unit development, called Seagrove, is the most recent work of national homebuilding giant Taylor Morrison.

Seagrove offers the unique opportunity for townhome living in the center of it all, where options for entertainment in Carlsbad are bountiful including boutique shopping, local restaurants and the sea just a short walk away. . . “Imagine being able to step out of your front door and experience all the spectacular qualities that make San Diego one of the most desirable cities to call home,” said Phil Bodem, president of Taylor Morrison’s Southern California division. “An excellent location and luxury design is what makes Seagrove a standout community.”

They’re a bit of a jaunt to the beach (thanks to the railroad tracks Army & Navy Academy), but for high style living in the Village ($960K and up), they’re pretty smooth. For the official word from Taylor Morrison, please follow the jump.

The UT Discovers Gaia Gelato

by The Editors on October 19, 2015

The San Diego Union Tribune has decided to blow the cover on our best kept secret gelato spot in The Village with a profile on Italian cousins Cristina Amoroso and Paola Richard. Their Gaia Gelato located in the Village Faire Shopping Center has been our go-to cold sweets spot since they opened.

The desserts they serve are made in the Italian style, which is denser, creamier and with less sugar than many American-style gelatos. Amoroso has developed more than 60 flavors of gelato, sorbet and granita and introduces new ones each week. To preserve the flavor and texture, gelatos are made in small batches and not sold after 24 hours.

It’s no wonder why their Yelp reviews are off the charts. For the rest of the story please click the link.

Super Shady Ad For Building A Mall

by The Editors on September 13, 2015

Nothing better outlines the outrageous lengths to which LA based shopping mall developer Caruso Affilitated will go in their campaign to obfuscate the truth about their development plans than their own disinformation ads that have been running non-stop on the web and local TV.

This edit above is in support of building a shopping mall on the shores of the Agua Hedionda lagoon. Did you hear the word “mall” used? Or shopping? Or acres of parking lots? Or anything at all related to what the developer hopes to do with the property? No. You didn’t. That’s because Caruso Affiliated would rather not mention all that. We also find an LA developer’s use of the word “our” when referring to the Carlsbad City Council a bit misleading as well. Talk about “outside interests.”

For a reminder of what Caruso Affiliated shopping malls looks like, check out their own photo of The Grove below. It was probably named after the nursery grown trees they sandwiched into holes in the concrete outside of Pottery Barn Kids. Nice use of open space, huh?

Hilton Carlsbad Becomes Cape Rey

by The Editors on April 21, 2015

Capereygirl

What’s in a name? Sometimes everything. Maybe that’s why the hotel resort formerly known as the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort is changing it’s name to Cape Rey Carlsbad. Huh?

Beyond the name, the bulk of the rebranding effort will manifest in the experiential aspects of each guest’s stay. Creative itineraries, excursions and partnerships from the new “Leisure Services Team” introduce guests – both on property and off- to the tastes, places, products and personalities that speak to the surrounding beach lifestyle and provide the type of immersive hospitality the modern traveler craves. Employees act as property ambassadors, whose expertise in everything from surf spots to taco shops provides guests with a backstage pass to all things local and Southern California-cool.

Hey, a complete re-branding with great photography to back it up never hurt anyone. And if some local businesses benefit for the update, even better. For the official word from Cape Rey, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Walmart Rolls Out New “Jumbo” Signage

by The Editors on April 1, 2014

ToofattowalkLOUISVILLE, Ky. April 1, 2014 – In an effort to more honestly communicate and serve its primary shopping consumers, Walmart today announced the launch of the newest member of their global weight-friendly initiative family. Meet Jumbo. Jumbo is a entirely new graphic icon that will be featured prominently on parking lot signage, in restrooms, and on the new double-wide check-out lanes coming to Walmart stores.

The new placards, designed by a team of award winning graphic artists, were created to more honestly communicate the nature of the needs of those who require extra assistance in Walmart Stores. Jumbo will be rolling out first at North County San Diego Walmart stores and then to the rest of the 11,302 Walmart stores around the world.

“Walmart is continually looking for innovative ways to increase the efficiency of our communications with customers,” said Stout Gutmeyer, senior vice president of global weight-friendly initiatives. “We felt we were doing the handicapped community a disservice by insinuating that all people who need extra help are confined to wheelchairs, when this is clearly not the case. The fact is the vast majority of those who have trouble easily accessing our stores are simply too fat to walk very far.”

In addition to the added signage, Wal-Mart has promised to increase the number of parking spots located close to the entrance by 15 percent. Those new parking spaces will feature the Jumbo signs and the jumbo logo stenciled to the pavement and will be available to anyone who needs to park closer to the entrance, but who may not be officially documented as physically challenged.

But what about the loss of parking spots up front? Won’t thin customers be upset? “What we’re finding is that with the recent “quantified self” movement, most of our fit shoppers (and we so have them) actually prefer to park their cars far away from the front of the store so they can log more steps on their personal fitness tracking devices,” Gutmeyer said. “So everyone is happy with the new parking.”
