Man Dies In Single Car Wreck on I-5

by The Editors on September 11, 2007

According to the San Diego Union Tribune William Michael Faringhy, 41, died Monday night when the truck he was driving collided with the center divider and flipped to its roof just south of Tamarack in the North bound side of Interstate 5.

Faringhy was driving north on Interstate 5 just south of Tamarack Avenue at a high speed when he lost control of his 2005 Nissan Titan and hit the concrete center divider, said California Highway Patrol officer Tom Kerns. . . The truck ended up on its roof and Faringhy, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown partly out of the vehicle.

No other cars were involved. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

More Flights at McClellan-Palomar Airport?

by The Editors on September 11, 2007

14087244 240X180According to NBCSandiego.com Carlsbad’s McClellan-Palomar Airport, which is already “one of the busiest small airports, could soon have more traffic.” Consultants have apparently suggested that due to North County’s growth it might not be a bad idea to begin looking into direct service to Denver, Houston, and other cities.

Carlsbad resident Dwight Webster said he’s read the reports. He said the plan calls for “potentially increasing the flights from 16 daily right now, to somewhere between say, 30 and 40, based on projections in that review.” . . . He and other residents said that means more noise over their homes and more risks of accidents or emergency landings.

Sure, there a many homes being built in a around the airport (Bressi Ranch) but what about the safety of Carlsbad’s golfers?

Ashworth’s Third Quarter In The Rough

by The Editors on September 10, 2007

Viewmedia-2More bad news for Carlsbad’s little white ball business. If it’s not TaylorMade battling Callaway over patents, it’s Ashworth Golf Company reporting numbers for the third quarter ending July 31: down 6.4 percent over last year with a consolidated net loss of $5.7 million on net revenue of $49.5 million.

In the third quarter of fiscal 2007, the Company’s consolidated gross margin decreased 270 basis points to 38.2% as compared to 40.9% in the third quarter of fiscal 2006. The decrease in consolidated gross margin was driven significantly by a decrease in revenue without a commensurate decrease in overhead expenses being applied to cost of sales.

Guess letting people keep their jobs when sales are down is bad for business. But we don’t golf, so what do we know.

Carlsbad Playreaders Present Neil LaBute

by The Editors on September 10, 2007

ShapeAnyone who has viewed the film Your Friends & Neighbors knows that playwright, screenwriter, and director Neil LaBute has a way of uncovering the dark, deeply disturbing realities of everyday life in shockingly benign ways. His film Nurse Betty could be one of the most uncomfortable two hours we’ve ever spent in a movie theatre. That’s exactly why we are particularly interested in seeing the Carlsbad Playreaders perform LaBute’s play The Shape of Things September 17 at 7:30 in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad City Library at 1775 Dove Lane.

“The Shape of Things” is Neil LaBute’s take on modern dating, filled with witty dialogue, humor, and naughty and nice relationships. As with most LaBute, he digs deeper than the surface with shocking results. Set on a college campus, Adam meets Evelyn, and he aims to please, inspiring dread and delight in his friends, Phillip and Jenny. Contemporary language and a not-to-be-missed ending! For mature audiences.

The performance is free and there are no advance reservations, however donations of $5 for adults and $1 for students is taken at the door. Follow the jump for all the details.

Bressi Ranch Mall Brawl

by The Editors on September 9, 2007

Bressi ShopsThe City of Carlsbad wants to let LNR Property build out a “shopping center” that will feature 12 buildings, including a 44,000-square-foot Stater Bros. grocery store and a 12,000-square-foot Trader Joe’s grocery store, however, thanks to recent changes in the development many residents of Bressi Ranch believe it no longer fits in with the original plan they were sold when they moved in.

Peter Katz moved to Bressi Ranch because he was attracted to its “new urbanist” principles. Katz is a planner and the author of The New Urbanism: Toward an Architecture of Community . . . Katz said he believes the proposals differ with Bressi Ranch’s master plan because the Trader Joe’s and Boys & Girls Club turn their back on the square, putting their main entrances on a parking lot on the other side of their buildings. He said that reduces their interaction with the square.

According to a North County Times story, that difference of opinion may come to a head at the City Council meeting Tuesday night September 11. Watch the fireworks live, online right here.

Austin Ganz Gets More Coverage

by The Editors on September 9, 2007

Ganz FijiCarlsbad High School’s Austin Ganz gets profiled in the San Diego Union Tribune today. A member of the Carlsbad Lancer Surf Team Ganz is apparently a competition machine who wants to steal that State title back from San Dieguito Academy:

He will enter approximately 36 contests this winter season under sponsorships from No Fear, Walker Surfboards, K5, GFH Skateboards and WNC phones.. . . Ganz is pretty certain that the Lancers team will regain its spot as the No. 1 high school surf team in the nation; San Dieguito Academy recently nabbed that position.

We hope Ganz helps make that happen.

Police were checking the campuses at Carlsbad High School and Valley Middle School at midday today, in response to a reported threat. . . Students at both schools were taking their lunch breaks on a normal schedule as police K-9 officers searched classrooms. Neither school was put into a lock-down situation.

According to the North County Times story, no future details were available.
