When ever the County Sheriff bird comes flying in at night we know something must be up. Last night around 9 PM we heard it circling. Now we know it was the 7-Eleven at the corner of Oak and Carlsbad Blvd.
The robber walked into the store about 8:45 p.m., displayed a pistol and demanded money. He escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. . . . He was described as a man of unknown race, possibly in his 20s, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 155 pounds, with a shaved head, wearing a mask and a tan jacket, Carlsbad police said.
We’re glad we weren’t in there getting a Slurpy refill.

In light of the recent firestorm in San Diego County, we’re going to have to take California’s State Law to keep 100 feet of defensible space around structures to heart. By the looks of it there are plenty of Carlsbadistanians who need help trimming their own underbrush, and Mîchel Petite Spa and Skin Care Gallery in the village may be just the ones to do it. ‘Taint only women who get waxed at Michel’s: men’s Bikini ($50) and Brazillian waxes ($75) are also the menu. This is one gift certificate that may truly be better to give than to receive.

We were making jokes earlier about Christmas consumption driving a rash of Carlsbad robberies, but this isn’t funny any longer. The Bank of America branch at the corner of Roosevelt and Carlsbad Village Drive was robbed yesterday (December 3) at about 2:30 PM. This is the same bank that was robbed on July 12 by a guy who looked like Elmer Fudd.
Police said the man gave the teller a demand note and showed a handgun in his waistband. The teller then gave the robber cash before he fled on foot, police said. . . .The thief was described as a white male, about 30 years old, with brown hair and a mustache. He was also described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a blue jacket, a polo shirt, and blue jeans, police said.
And the bank robbery tote board (counting since May 07) moves to nine. This is the second Carlsbad B of A robbery in three days.

California State Park lifeguards are planning on monster surf beginning this afternoon, according to a story on SignOnSanDiego.com. “It’s going to be very, very big,” said Alex Peabody, an aquatic safety specialist with the California State Parks public safety division. “You’re going to see some pretty amazing waves.”
Waves are expected to reach 5 to 7 feet this afternoon, then increase through tomorrow morning. By then, swells could reach 8 to 10 feet, with sets in excess of 15 feet. A high surf advisory will be in effect from 1 p.m. today through 10 p.m. Thursday.
Mother Ocean must love Wednesdays? We will keep you posted as the predicted swell of the year rolls in. Check back on Carlsbadistan.com for full photo coverage.

11:08 AM: No real sign of the swell yet.

While the rest of the world gives each other woolen slippers for Christmas, Carlsbadistanians can be happy that we are able to gift the traditional Hawaiian “slippah” instead. Sure you can pick up a pair of Rainbows, Reefs, Cobain, or other flip-flops at various stores around the village, but we’re backing these Havaianas from The M Collection on State Street. They’re your basic rubber flip, but thanks to a special and highly guarded Brazillian rubber recipe these things are soft as those marshmallows you just put in your hot-cocoa. Plus, with a price that hovers around $15 dollars they’re cheap enough to stock up on.

Last Friday December 1, 59 middle schools visited Legoland for the First Lego League Championship Tournament, a competition in which kids design Lego robots that must complete tasks. Our previous post didn’t not include the winners, so here they are.
The Championship Winners (who will advance onto the Championships in Atlanta in April) are the Gatorobytes from Folsom, California.
First Place: The Sandy LEGO Beachbots from San Diego.
Second Place: It’s Easy Being Green from Manhattan Beach
Third: The Lego Loonies from Lake View Terrace
Fourth: A three-way tie: Cold Fusion (San Diego), Odd Watts (San Diego) and JV Beach Bot #1 (Long Beach)
Awards were also given for:
Design: Innovative Design: The Sandy LEGO Beachbots (San Diego)
Design: Robot Dependability: Plus Rated Power (Newhall)
Design: Programming: Cold Fusion (San Diego)
Project: Quality Research: Robotrix (La Jolla)
Project: Creative Presentation: If Rotation=1 (San Diego)
Project: Innovative Solution: It’s Easy Being Green (Manhattan Beach)
Team Spirit: Team Evil Genius (Valencia)
Looks like San Diego had good representation, but the crew from the out skirts of Sacto took it all. It’s a shame: we don’t see any Carlsbad teams on this list. What up?

According to a story on NBCSandiego.com, a man walked into the Bank of America on Loker Avenue West Saturday morning December 1, “showed a handgun and asked for money from a teller.”
Police said the man left and got into the passenger’s side of a silver, four-door Nissan with covered license plates. . . The vehicle was last seen heading east on Palomar Airport Road.
Bank robbery: such a nice way to kick off a day of holiday shopping. It must make those difficult gift decisions so much easier.

We’re not big fans of training wheels on kids bikes. In fact, we think training wheels are responsible for much of what is wrong with kids today. But that is another post entirely. Let’s just say this: if a child isn’t ready for a bicycle, then keep them on their tricycle. And, if they’re going to stay on their trikes longer, we found a really cool Christmas tricycle at Ella Grace, the children’s clothing store hidden away in the catacombs of the Village Faire.
The Sky King Trike ($249.00) is made by Air Flow, Inc. of Orange, California and is a near perfect replica of the original 1936 Sky King. It is 26 inches tall, with red powder coat paint and chrome insignias, solid rubber tires, adjustable spring seat, rubber hand grips, a working light, and it is all steel. It is the perfect tricycle for boys three to six years of age. For girls, Ella Grace also has the same bike in the Pink Princess model. With a trike this cool kids may never want to step up to a bicycle, but at least they won’t be out tilting around on training wheels.

The Carlsbad Fire Department’s classic fire truck had a special passenger this afternoon as hundreds of kids and their parents gathered for the annual Carlsbad Rotary Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony at the Village Faire in the heart of Carlsbadistan. And who was this special rider? It was Santa Claus.
Tree-lighting guests were treated to free hot apple cider, coffee and cookies, as well as a Christmas card making station for the kids. Santa actually allowed strangers to sit on his lap while elves snapped Polaroid pictures for the kids.
Before Mayor Bud Lewis officially lit the tree, the crowd enjoyed a girls choir from St. Patricks as well as several large groups of dancers including Jazzersize, Irish traditional dancing, and the ubiquitous Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers.
We got cold and left before hearing the Mayor’s words to kick off the season, but we’re going to guess that they were wonderfully appropriate.

Jazzercisers jingle bell rocking out.

As much as we hate stumbling through the over-stuffed grandma clutter of Linda’s Gift, we often find ourselves forced to squeeze through the maze of knick-knacks in search of that special treat or card. So you can imagine our surprise when we nearly knocked over a whole stack of large tins from Tea Forte.
Tea Forte’s individually hand crafted silken infusers reportedly provide the world’s finest method to brew a cup of tea. “The open weave of the fabric allows the water to flow freely around the teas, allowing the tea leaves to unfurl and the flavors to mingle in the large open form of the infuser.”
Each Large Tin contains 15 of Tea Forte’s stylishly designed silken tea infusers with the choice of Classic (three infusers of each: Black Currant, Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Orange Pekoe), Exotic (three infusers of each: African Solstice, Bombay Chai, Ginger, Green Tango & White Ambrosia) or Sampler (three infusers of each: Black Currant, Chamomile, Citrus Mint, Earl Grey, & Oasis).
The holidays can often get a little out-of-control hyper and there is nothing that calms things down like a hot cup of tea. That’s why Tea Forte Large Tin ($24) is one of our favorite hostess gifts.
