Carlsbad Jock Goes Ivy League

by The Editors on June 18, 2007

61707190917Carlsbad High School’s Spencer Hood, 18, graduated last week with honors and a 4.1 grade point average. Now, he’s on his way to Dartmouth where says he’d like to put the “stereotype of dumb-jock to rest.”

I always get labeled as the ‘football player,’ the ‘dumb jock,’ but that’s not the case,” he said last week. “It’s a general misconception that athletes are not well-rounded, that they don’t focus on academics. People are surprised when they see someone who can excel at both.

Hood, who was named scholar-athlete of the year and defensive football player of the year, has a fraternal twin brother, Gordon, also graduated with honors and is off to Brown. Yeah, they’re a double threat.

Congrats to the entire Hood family.

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens

by The Editors on June 17, 2007

Stone Gar

After eating at the new Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens at 1999 Citracado Parkway, in Escondido (occasionally we’re forced to escape the June gloom) we were reminded of the old dinner party aphorism: send the beer drinkers out for the booze while the wine drinkers do the cooking.

Unfortunately, at the Stone World Bistro the beer drinkers are not only brewing (at which they obviously excel), but they’re also cooking. In this process a little too much beer is spilled into the food. Seems like most every item on the menu has a splash of suds in it: the dipping sauces (cheese and barbeque), the batter used to deep fry the mashed potato balls and onion rings, and even the ketchup. It’s almost as if someone is in the kitchen simply spraying beer down the whole line. (Note to beer drinking cooks: not everything is better with beer.)

Families Make Art Happen

by The Editors on June 17, 2007

CacconOn Saturday, June 23, 2007 (which is a pretty big day around here for reasons that will go undisclosed at this point) the Cannon Art Gallery is hosting one of its hands on art-making events for the whole family. It’s called the Family Open Studio and it will be held from 11 AM to 2 PM in the courtyard of the Carlsbad Library at 1775 Dove Lane (the big one out near Alga and El Camino Real).

First there is an art exhibition (this week featuring art from employees of the William D. Cannon Art Gallery) and then it’s time for everyone to kick back and make some art (with everything you need supplied by the gallery). For more information call the Arts Info Line at 760/434-2904 or click here.

TGIF Jazz June 22: Eddie “Devil Boy” Turner

by The Editors on June 17, 2007

Img 8212VThis Friday evening (June 22, 2007) from 6-8 PM Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz In The Parks kicks off it’s 22nd season with Eddie “Devil Boy” Turner at Stagecoach Park. Turner’s guitar work has been described as “otherworldly,” “scorching,” and “chilling.” If his website is any judge, then we’re pretty sure he’s been down to the crossroads, if you know what we mean.

His ethereal style is an amalgam of the Afro-Cuban rhythms of his heritage and the music that influenced him as a teenager: Chicago blues, jazz, r&b and psychedelic rock. The Cuban-born singer/guitarist cut his teeth in several rock bands contributing what Slate magazine describes as “spacey-yet-resounding solos.”

We’ll see you there Friday night.

Happy Father’s Day Carlsbad

by The Editors on June 17, 2007

Babyhands

Today is the day to celebrate all those guys who have decided that breeding has it’s advantages. In a world where more children does not necessarily mean economic advantage it is good to know that a few good men are still choosing to have families, to love them, and to support them. We’re saying thanks today for all the things Dad’s do. All those things that go unnoticed all year long. Especially all those things that we never noticed until we become fathers ourselves.

Thanks, Dads. Happy Father’s Day. . . Now, if there was only some surf we could all catch a couple waves in celebration of rad Dadness.

Carlsbad Police Ticket Day Laborers

by The Editors on June 17, 2007

Using a 1980 law designed to curb newspaper hawkers on Carlsbad’s city streets, the Carlsbad Police department has begun ticketing day laborers who are looking for work in North County. Apparently, homeowners near The Country Store on El Camino Real have been complaining.

Police Capt. Mike Shipley said the department has received numerous complaints from homeowners in the area about day laborers. . . “The migrant issue is a broad issue. Part of our job is to respond to complaints,” Shipley said. “The El Camino Real and Carlsbad Village Drive area is an extremely high complaint area.”

While the law does not specify a fine, a judge last week “ordered a day laborer to pay a fine of $192 including court fees.” Leave it to our legal system to punish those who are simply looking for work.

White’s Tennesse Shoe Demo

by The Editors on June 17, 2007

Shaun WtennCarlsbad’s Shaun White was in Franklin Tennessee yesterday putting on a show for the kids at the Journeys Backyard BBQ tour at CoolSprings Galleria in Williamson County. But not all the kids were happy.

Christian Bush, 10, of Joelton, was disappointed last year because skateboarder and MTV star Bam Margera, wasn’t on the program. “I didn’t like it very much last year because Bam wasn’t there,” he said.
He left unfulfilled again this year because Margera had to cancel his appearance after suffering a lacerated liver earlier in the week, event organizers said.

That didn’t stop Shaun and the rest of the Carlsbad-based Adio Footwear team from putting on a show including Shaun pulling “a couple of 720-degree spins in warm conditions.”

The Cheese Cutting Masterpiece

by The Editors on June 16, 2007

Swissmar

Being cheese lovers, it’s rare that we focus too closely on exactly how the cheese gets cut. Cutting the cheese is something one must do in polite company because simply biting the corner off a brand new block of roquefort just wouldn’t be polite.

We’ve done our share of nibbling off a block of Sonoma Jack while lounging poolside at the Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga, California; ripping a piece from a sourdough baguette every now and again to keep the cheese-to-bread ratio perfect, however, those days are over. Now, we will take no trip to The Valley without our new Swissmar cheese slicer from The Poached Pear at 2946 State St. in downtown Carlsbad.

This stainless steel masterpiece is 5.75″x5″ and has the deft, balanced feel of a surgical instrument. It glides through even the coldest Tillamook Cheddar like it was melting butter. Cutting the cheese has never been so much fun, nor so effortless. Seems like we’re cutting the cheese all the time now.

Sea Lion Pup Snatched by SeaWorld

by The Editors on June 16, 2007

We’ve been seeing a few too many sea lions lately. The other day while surfing we saw a destressed looking sea lion floating vertically just outside the lineup with only his nose out of the water. The next day a dead one washed up on the beach. Then yesterday morning, June 15, a baby Sea Lion pup washed up on the beach at Cherry Street. It was alive and doing well. The life guards called SeaWorld and:

The SeaWorld team arrived about 10 a.m. and decided to take the animal to diagnose it, said lifeguard Matthew Clark. The team couldn’t diagnose it in the field and they didn’t want to leave it there because it was so young, he said.

Wonder what will happen to this pup? Hopefully, it won’t show any aptitude for entertaining huge throngs of toursits. If it does, it will be a long, hard road to freedom.
