Mob Turns Out For Airport Hearing

by The Editors on September 21, 2007

According to the North County Times “More than 100 people poured into a Palomar Airport Advisory Committee meeting Thursday night to discuss a recently completed economic report.”

The report, called the Air Services Situation Review, wasn’t on the agenda, but that didn’t stop about 30 people from voicing their views. The crowd appeared divided, with half saying the report’s suggestions would make the place a safer, more attractive place, and the other half saying that noisy planes were already causing them enough grief.

We love flying out of Palomar: the more flights, the better. But then we don’t live in Bressi Ranch. Click the link for all the details.

Possible Rain, Weatherpeople Wet Themselves

by The Editors on September 20, 2007

Satrad Reg 640X480Two nights ago on the evening news (we were only watching to catch up on this) we watched the KNSD weather bunny get all jittery over a “big, coming winter storm,” that was supposed to drown Carlsbad in .5 inches of rain on Thursday.

Today, under perfectly blue skies, we were reminded once again of the old axiom: San Diego TV Weather professionals are ALWAYS wrong (News 8’s Shawn Styles is so bad he doesn’t even count). Here’s what the San Diego Union Tribune has to say about our .02 inches of rain this morning and the “big storm” that is reportedly rolling in tomorrow afternoon.

The Weather Service says the best chance for significant rainfall in the county will be Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Rainfall totals are expected to range from about 2 inches in the San Bernardino Mountains to less than a quarter inch in southern San Diego County. The snow level is expected to drop to about 6,000 feet Friday night.

We should be taking bets. . . but we’ll wait and see. Hopefully, all this weather won’t get in the way of this weekend’s Art Splash or A Taste of Carlsbad. Because that’s pretty much all we have planned.

Hemlock Stairs Get Repaired

by The Editors on September 19, 2007

Stairsv

The Seawall Salts had to find a new place to hang out this morning as the City of Carlsbad took the last few steps in their seemingly summer-long “replace the stairs” project.

This morning, as the Hemlock Stairs were being replaced, morning strollers and surfers were forced with either walk on the east side of Coast Highway or down below as the Seawall’s upper deck was closed from Cherry Street to Redwood. At least all those crumbling steps (that wreaked havoc on our bare feet all summer) are finally gone. More photos after the jump.

KNSD’s Rory Devine On the Carlsbad Beat

by The Editors on September 18, 2007

Rory 2

Our favorite San Diego TV news reporter Rory Devine (along with Alejandro Alejandre behind the camera) are posted up with the KNSD Channel 7/39 live truck on Roosevelt St across from Hennessy’s this afternoon for live coverage of the new entertainment regulations that will most likely be passed tonight by the Carlsbad City Council. Rory, however, was running into the same problems the newspaper reporters have had lately.

“The owners aren’t in, the managers say they’re not authorized to talk, and the customers aren’t even here yet,” she said to her news director.

It must have been a slow news day. And we guess that’s good. For more check out the 6 PM news tonight on KNSD 7/39.

Update: Carlsbad’s $100 Million High School

by The Editors on September 14, 2007

Soil samples from the proposed site of Carlsbad Unified School District’s new $95.4 million high school on the Eastern Front have been sent off to be analyzed as part of the environmental study of the project, according to a story in the North County Times.

The study is designed to show how the proposed school would affect the land and its surrounding neighbors, said Walter Freeman, assistant superintendent of business services with the Carlsbad Unified School District. The study must also propose ways to minimize any effects, he said.

Even a group started to preserve the area doesn’t seem to have a problem with the land being used for a new school. Which is a good thing

Diane Nygaard, the president of a conservation group called Preserve Calavera, said her group had hoped the district would leave the land untouched, but that they aren’t fighting plans for the campus. “We would love to see it become part of the preservation area but clearly the school district needs it for (the) school,” said Nygaard, referring to a swath of open space along Calavera Creek from south Oceanside, through Carlsbad to Vista.

Man Dies In Single Car Wreck on I-5

by The Editors on September 11, 2007

According to the San Diego Union Tribune William Michael Faringhy, 41, died Monday night when the truck he was driving collided with the center divider and flipped to its roof just south of Tamarack in the North bound side of Interstate 5.

Faringhy was driving north on Interstate 5 just south of Tamarack Avenue at a high speed when he lost control of his 2005 Nissan Titan and hit the concrete center divider, said California Highway Patrol officer Tom Kerns. . . The truck ended up on its roof and Faringhy, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown partly out of the vehicle.

No other cars were involved. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

More Flights at McClellan-Palomar Airport?

by The Editors on September 11, 2007

14087244 240X180According to NBCSandiego.com Carlsbad’s McClellan-Palomar Airport, which is already “one of the busiest small airports, could soon have more traffic.” Consultants have apparently suggested that due to North County’s growth it might not be a bad idea to begin looking into direct service to Denver, Houston, and other cities.

Carlsbad resident Dwight Webster said he’s read the reports. He said the plan calls for “potentially increasing the flights from 16 daily right now, to somewhere between say, 30 and 40, based on projections in that review.” . . . He and other residents said that means more noise over their homes and more risks of accidents or emergency landings.

Sure, there a many homes being built in a around the airport (Bressi Ranch) but what about the safety of Carlsbad’s golfers?

Carlsbad Firefighters Memorialize 9/11

by The Editors on September 9, 2007

As a way of remembering all the people who died in the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001 Carlsbad firefighters will be holding a ceremony at Fire Station 5.

This year’s ceremony, which will be at the city’s Fire Station 5 at 2540 Orion Way, will include speeches by fire and police leaders. Bagpipe players and drummers from the San Diego Emerald Society will open the event at 9:30 a.m. . . . After a somber beginning, the event will have light-hearted moments. Children will be able to view and even ride on an antique engine provided by the Carlsbad Firefighters Association. Fire station tours and refreshments also are planned.

Village Businesses Evacuated For Fire

by The Editors on September 7, 2007

CafeNothing like dropping in late with news of a fire, however, on Wednesday morning September 5 at about 9 AM what is being called an “electrical fire” started in the attic of the building that houses the Daily News Cafe on the corner of Coast Highway and Carlsbad Village Drive.

Fire crews evacuated the building, made sure the blaze had not spread through its walls and worked to contain water damage, Heiser said. . . Although firefighters finished working at the scene in about 90 minutes, water damage and some electrical problems kept businesses there from immediately reopening, Carlsbad Division Chief Chris Heiser said.

But it didn’t slow down the Daily News, they were open for business and “rolling” when we spoke with them this morning. Phew. We like that place.
