While it’s obvious we were not invited to any grand opening festivities at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa on February 25, 2008, we are still glad that Carlsbadistan’s newest resort hotel is keeping things on schedule.
This magnificent new property offers 129 gorgeous guestrooms, including 13 suites, complete with ocean or fairway views. The hotel will offer an additional 121 rooms, scheduled to open in May 2008. All rooms and suites are outfitted with comfortable leather seating, oversized work desks and 32″ LCD flat panel televisions and the signature Sheraton Sweet SleeperTM Bed – a nine-layered custom-designed ensemble boasting an exquisitely comfortable, plush mattress, fluffy down hypoallergenic pillows, crisp cotton sheets, cozy blanket and signature blanket and duvet. Sheraton also gives its guests front-row seats to high-quality, in-room programming through its Scene@Sheraton entertainment package, including sneak previews and premier sports programming.
Looks like we may have to plan another vacation at home to see if it beats out the Four Seasons Aviara.

A man described by police as a bearded “light-skinned black man, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and 130 to 140 pounds. . . was wearing a dark blue baseball cap, a gray T-shirt over a light blue T-shirt and blue jeans,” when he robbed the Union Bank of California at 7140 Avenida Encinas at 6:07 p.m. last night (Tuesday March 12, 2008). He reportedly:
handed a teller a note demanding money, Lt. Matt Margo said. The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of cash, and he left on foot. Police checked the area but were unable to locate the robber.
This is the 11th Carlsbad bank robbery we have counted in the past 10 months.

Carlsbad High School’s Kaylee Weil (GPA: 4.5, SAT: 2290, Class Rank: 1) has been named to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first California All-State Academic Team at the “first Annual Governor’s Academic Recognition and All-State Academic Team Awards Dinner in Sacramento.” Out of 144 students being honored by the Governor only 25 were chosen for this special honor.
“I think it is extremely important that we take the time to honor the hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence all of these students have demonstrated,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “These young men and women should be proud of what they have accomplished. We have students who never missed a day of class, made perfect scores on the SAT and still find time to volunteer for a dozen different extra-curricular activities. They mentor, tutor and excel in sports. They dream of making the world a better place and they already are.”
Congratulations Kaylee, you’re making Carlsbadistan proud.

Carlsbadistan’s own trading card company Upper Deck turns 20 this year and to celebrate the company is producing a limited-edition card set featuring all the athletes (like Michael Jordan) who helped made Upper Deck famous.
Upper Deck was founded in 1988, but as every collector knows, the first set from the leader in sports trading cards debuted in 1989.
As Upper Deck prepares for the 20th anniversary of that historic set, a special collecting experience is being offered in the months leading up to the release of Upper Deck’s 2009 Series 1 Baseball. The company is producing a limited-edition, 80-card set featuring athletes from professional baseball, football, basketball and hockey that have helped make Upper Deck the collector’s choice over the last 20 years.
Happy Birthday, Upper Deck. Twenty-years and we’ve never bought one of your cards or products. Is that possible?

Carlsbad golf clothing company Ashworth has today reported that they lost $7.4 million in the first quarter on $34 million in revenue. That’s compared to losing $2.4 million in the first quarter of 2007.
Revenue for the quarter ended Jan. 31 fell to $34.5 million from $38.3 million. Shares of the Carlsbad, Calif.-based provider of golf apparel and sportswear closed the regular session down 5 cents at $2.65, but rose about 5.4%, or 14 cents, to $2.79 in after-hours trading.
Maybe things can get worse.

According to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune Connie Liu, 12, “an eighth-grader at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad,” was the runner-up in the San Diego County Spelling Bee held this morning at the Scottish Rite Memorial Center, Mission Valley. She lost to the repeat winner Justin Song of Carmel Valley Middle School.
Nice work Connie. You’re making Carlsbadistan proud.

According to a Scott Bair story in the North County Times, Carlsbad resident Matthew Wild “severely injured his spine diving into a swimming pool in May 2003, just weeks before graduating from Santa Fe Christian School.” Now thanks to an organization called Life Rolls On, Wild had the chance to get back on board.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been in the water, so that in itself was a great experience,” said Wild, who also starred on the Eagles basketball team that won a CIF San Diego Section title in 2003. “It’s completely different than the surfing I’m used to, but it was still awesome to be a part of it again.”

A little ad agency from Carlsbadistan (who got famous pimping sneakers for Airwalk back in the day) is now launching Skyy Vodka’s newest product Skyy Infusions. But apparently, Lambesis really is that good (and not all that small).
Instead of its traditional brand advertising that posits the liquid in chic, club environments, the Infusions print ads will feature only the new bottle and fruit imagery, as well as educational copy. An ad for the raspberry flavor includes a listing of BTI scores, and the tag: “Why drink artificially tasting vodka when you can go natural?” Ads direct users to SkyyInfusions.com for more information. A 15-market, two-month mobile marketing tour and online ads also support.
Congrats, Lambesis. We’re just bummed we’re going to have to wait 20 days to taste some.

The Carlsbad-based health water company Penta is relaunching this month according to a story on Brandweek.com. Apparently, the “patented process that allegedly produced a five-sided molecule” had some trouble with its science. Now, “the water will be touted as ultra-purified, antioxidant water with no additives.”
Who cares how many sides are on the molecule? Let’s keep it focused on consumer benefits,” said Dennis O’Brien, CEO at Penta, Carlsbad Calif. The veteran ConAgra and Procter & Gamble exec took the helm nine months ago.”
Well, we guess if the CEO doesn’t care, well, then Penta is just really pure water with a $4 million ad campaign behind it. Then again, this same strategy has worked pretty well for Evian. Anyone thirsty?

Kind of looks like we’re overloading a little on Carlsbadistan business stories, but for some reason we’re finding them interesting today.
Like this one for example: Entriq is a Carlsbad-based company (owned by South Africa’s Naspers) that claims to be the only “all-in-one pay media solution that makes turning your content into cash as simple as DragDropSell.” Entriq has just purchased DayPort, a company that “helps media companies syndicate, manage and monetize their online video properties” for $10 million.
Guy Tennant (click here for an interview), Entriq chief operating officer, said DayPort’s advertising-supported model will add an important dimension in the culture of Naspers, whose biggest business is managing pay TV programming. “We’ve been all about premium content,” he said. “What we haven’t done yet is work on the free content side.”
And to think, all this is going on while we’re out surfing. We love living in Silicon Beach.
[Editors’ Note: Apparently, we were surfing a little too much as we failed to mention (or notice) that the sale was actually for between “$10 and $50 million.” Probably on the higher end. Thanks, John.]
