Carlsbad’s RyGuy Kicking It In Ireland

by The Editors on July 16, 2008

Carlsbad soccer player Ryan Guy, 23, is reportedly “making a name for himself in the Irish Premier Division,” according to a story on Yanks Abroad.

Guy has shown a nose for the goal, bagging 4 goals already this season. The 23 year old debuted in April of 2007 for the Irish club, after a professional stint with the Southern California Fusion of the National Professional Soccer League, the US’ fourth tier.

He’s also getting used to living in Ireland.

“It’s hard for me to believe I’ve been here a year and a half already. It was rough and tumble, frustrating to say the least for the first five months or so when I was going through the work permit process and unable to get on the pitch. When it did finally go through however, I was fortunate to put in good performances when questions were asked of me.

Bush Lifts Executive Offshore Drilling Ban

by The Editors on July 14, 2008

Oil RigIn another shocking reminder of just how long these last six months of the Bush presidency are going to be, George W. today lifted the executive ban on offshore drilling.

With this action, the executive branch’s restrictions on this exploration have been cleared away. This means that the only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action from the U.S. Congress,” Mr. Bush told reporters at the White House.

The American people? How can anyone take this seriously. It’s not the American people who will benefit from the rape of America’s coastlines, it’s the Bush family and friends oil business. Luckily, lifting the executive order means nothing until congress agrees.

That didn’t stop US Representative Darrell Issa (R-Vista) from jumping onboard, in a statement released to the North County Times:

“This decision is a step in the right direction for American consumers and our economy, but a defeat for the environmental lobby that has spent tens of millions of dollars in Washington over the years to place our nation’s energy reserves off-limits,” Issa said in a written statement.

Note to the oblivious: the solution is not more drilling, the solution is less consumption. Is this really that difficult to understand?

Carlsbad Aquafarm Bets on Abalone

by The Editors on July 14, 2008

AquafarmWe’ve always thought of them as pelican perches, but those floats in the Agua Hedionda lagoon are actually part of Carlsbad Aquafarm’s growing “multimillion-dollar” investment which now include abalone tanks, according to recent Associated Press story.

In a process that has taken years to complete, microscopic abalone larvae have finally grown into fist-sized mollusks that can fetch $30 a pound from top-shelf restaurants and other buyers.
“It’s very slow, growing abalone. You spend two or three years of work until you have something large enough to sell,” said Matt Steinke, a manager at Carlsbad Aquafarm.

We’re glad to know the business is working. And if The French Laundry is cooking them, they must be good.

Carlsbad Charter City Changes Charge On

by The Editors on July 14, 2008

KangarooThe Carlsbad City Council is wasting no time making changes after becoming a charter city. In June, the City Council changed the State requirements for what makes a quorum at Council meetings, making it much easier for them to vote on anything. Now, according to a story in the North County Times, they are considering no longer “paying union-scale wages for large construction projects” and changing the way they purchase office supplies.

City officials have said recently that the proposed purchasing changes could save Carlsbad millions of dollars, but the proposal is likely to be opposed by construction union members. In the past, union advocates have said that failing to follow the state’s prevailing requirement will hurt local families.

It seems to us like the State guidelines are there for some very good reasons, and for the local City Council to just change them to save a little money, or in the case of the office supplies, make it easier to spend money without getting “formal price quotes” just doesn’t seem responsible.

Carlsbad Craigslist Rental Scam

by The Editors on July 14, 2008

Two Orange County men ages 34 and 38 were arrested in Carlsbad on Friday, July 11, 2008 for allegedly using Craigslist to rent out houses that they did not own.

According to police, the men entered at least two vacant Carlsbad homes that were in foreclosure and then listed them for rent on the Web site Craigslist. . . . They collected possibly thousands of dollars in security deposits and rent from several people, according to paperwork that officers found on the men.

Luckily, a woman who had been burned by the men posted a warning on Craiglist and another renter who had scheduled a meeting with them saw the warning and called police who casually attended the meeting, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The men were “booked on suspicion of fraud, burglary and illegal use of the Internet. Bail was set at $300,000 each.”

Boyd Conrick, of Newcastle, Australia and Rachel Challis, of Carlsbadistan (by way of Christchurch, New Zealand) bested the field of nearly 1000 as the 2008 City of Carlsbad Triathlon finished up today at 9:20 AM under perfectly clear, warm skies. Conrick’s time of 1:08:37.8 was one-minute off Michael Simpson’s winning time in last year’s race.

Conrick Fin2Conrick was the first out of the water and for the rest of the race no one ever got close. “It was a great race,” he said moments after crossing the finish line. “I love the ocean swims, you know. I felt good.”

Having competed in the Lake Stevens Half Ironman just last weekend, where he placed 7th, Conrick was not sure he was going to be 100 percent for this race.

“I didn’t know whether my legs would be recovered, you know. But I got in a good rhythm on the swim and I didn’t push too hard on the bike, and then I went around one of the turns halfway on the bike and I realized those guys weren’t catching me and they were together, so I pushed a little harder and then got a good lead on the run and then was able to go off hard and then ease off a little in the last half mile.”

The women’s pro field was so small that Challis felt she didn’t really have that much competition even though she finished in 1:17:51.6. “There were only two pros in the field so that was already a good head start I’m sure the others are preparing for half Ironman and Ironman racers,” she said.

Challis-1But this is more than a race for the 32-year-old mother of two toddlers. “It’s still good to be back,” she said. “This is the first race that I did after my two year old was born two years ago. He was only two months old, so now I have to do it every year now. So it’s nice to win it finally.”

But those were just the winners. The real stories are your stories. Please follow Tom In Carlsbad’s lead and let us know how your race went in the comments section. The best stories will win Carlsbadistan sticker packs.

Knife Wielding Man Gets SWATed

by The Editors on July 12, 2008

The Carlsbad SWAT team ended a three-hour standoff with a 24-year-old man, when after breaking into the house, the man jumped from the second story window of a home on Tara Court near James drive, according to a story in the North County Times.

When officers arrived, two women ran from the house. They told police that the suspect was on the second floor with a knife and acting out of control, possibly under the influence of drugs. . . . The home’s door was locked and barricaded, and the man inside refused to cooperate with officers, Sutt said. Police negotiators and the SWAT team were called, and three nearby homes were evacuated.

The man was reportedly taken to Tri-City Medical Center for some needed observation.

Carlsbad Apple Store: No More Guessing

by The Editors on July 12, 2008

Apple Box

Apparently the new Carlsbad Apple Store at The Forum is no longer a surprise. One thing we can say is that the iPhone lines at this location were considerably shorter than they were at UTC yesterday on iPhone Friday.

For how that went, check out this post from a blogger who lives in Carlsbadistan.

Foundation Buys Lagoon Land

by The Editors on July 11, 2008

Batlag-1The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation has purchased 18 acres of land on the lagoon’s northeastern side for $2.4 million dollars, according to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune.

The former owner, the Mitsuuchi family, held the property for more than 20 years and once raised nursery plants there, but it hasn’t been used for agriculture for a long time. The property was zoned for medium-density housing and open space, but its steep slopes and habitat allowed for about half to be developable.

Nice work. Open space is good space.

TGIF Jazz July 11: Johnny “V” Vernazza Band

by The Editors on July 11, 2008

Johnnv Bwportrait 0After tonght’s TGIF Jazz In The Park rockin’ blues performance by guitar virtuoso Johnny “V” Vernazza and his band we can all wave good-bye to the Eastern Front and the miles of track homes that surround Stagecoach Park, because this is the last show on the ball field all summer. And it’s going to be a good one.

Johnny V has played guitar since 1963, but it was as a member of the Elvin Bishop Band that he gained the most notoriety. With six albums, endless touring, and the number three hit song in the country (Fooled Around And Fell In Love) Johnny and Elvin basically created the dual lead guitar style that is still a part of the southern rock sound today.

The show runs from 6 to 8 PM at Stagecoach Park. And the dance floor is huge, so don’t forget your dancing shoes.
