by The Editors on August 13, 2007

According to NBCSandiego.com a three-year-old boy was pulled from a shallow children’s pool at the La Costa Resort and Spa this after noon a little before 2 PM.

The child was at the pool with his parents, but was pulled from the water by a woman unrelated to him, according to NBC 7/39. Witness Branden Belford said she saw the woman pull the boy from the water by his arm. The child had water spilling from his mouth, according to Belford.

The child was unresponsive when he was airlifted to Children’s Hospital according to resort officials.

Show ‘Em Your O Towel

by The Editors on August 13, 2007

OtowelCarlsbad’s Laura Ogan was at the beach one day watching people try to fit square towels underneath a round umbrella when she had a thought: “Why doesn’t somebody invent a round towel with a hole in the middle to put their umbrella in.” No one had, so Ogan did. In fact, she filed and received a patent from the United States Patent Office for The O Towel, a round towel with two 100% polypropylene grommets that allow an umbrella to be planted in the sand right in the middle of the towel. Now, with the help of two other women, she is bringing the towel to market.

We took the O Towel out for a test run Sunday after Art In The Village and it worked exactly as promised. In fact, it made us feel stupid for having cut holes in all those old sheets. One thing: if you line the grommets up with the shadow of your umbrella pole, when the sun goes down you can move the umbrella to the hole on the outside of the circle and stay in the shade until sundown without moving the towel at all. And that is the genius behind the two-grommet design.

For more info call: 800.679.7032 and tell them you saw it on Carlsbadistan.

LeRoy Grannis Turns 90

by The Editors on August 13, 2007

81207193945Carlsbad’s legendary surf photographer LeRoy Grannis celebrated his 90th birthday with 150 of his friends at the Oceanside Community Center Sunday August 13, 2007. And as one would imagine, along with his wife of 67 years Katie, and son John there were a lot of legends in the crowd as well.

Donald Takayama, a five-time U.S. surfing champion and renowned board designer, said he first met Grannis in his native Hawaii. “LeRoy took a picture of me when I was a little kid surfing without any clothes on in Hawaii,” Takayama said. “LeRoy’s been an inspiration to me. (He is) one of the great surfers of yesteryear.”

On glassy mornings we still look outside the lineup hoping to see LeRoy, on his knees with his white floppy brimmed hat paddling by, but he’s not surfing any longer. Happy Birthday, Mr. Grannis. We’ll keep watching for you anyway.

Et Tu Brute: Free Shakespeare in Carlsbad

by The Editors on August 13, 2007

CaesarlargeThe New Village Arts Theatre is giving Carlsbad William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar absolutely free from August 9-18 at the theatre at 2787 State Street at 7 PM Thursdays and Fridays, at 3 and 7 PM Saturdays and at 2 PM on Sundays.

In past years, the production has taken place outdoors in one of Carlsbad’s parks. This summer, Shakespeare is staying inside so that the company can show off its new theater. . . “It allows us a greater intimacy,” said Fran Gercke, artistic director for the theater. “With ‘Julius Caesar,’ which deals with conspiracy and secrets, cloak and dagger, misdirection, and political espionage, it’s important that the audience see the little things.”

So far we’ve missed them all. Please don’t follow our lead. Go see it. We’ll remind you again, if you forget.

by The Editors on August 12, 2007

After the recent collapse of a Minneapolis bridge which has killed nine people (so far) everyone has become a little more interested in exactly what bridges need to be repaired. Well, according to 10 News, the I-5 bridge over Agua Hedionda lagoon in Carlsbad is currently on the California Department of Transportation bridge fix it list.

Caltrans has proposed repairs to the deck and substructure of the Interstate 5 crossing of the lagoon in Carlsbad, according to the list of 195 high-priority bridge projects. Caltrans Director Will Kempton did not specifically address the bridge in comments to reporters in a conference call.

The repairs will be specifically addressed real soon, right?

Said To Drive #21 in Centurion

by The Editors on August 12, 2007

SenglenCarlsbad’s own NASCAR driver Boris Said (of the No Fear team) was in the process of sitting out Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen race thanks to a qualifying “rain-out” at Watkins Glen International when Said reportedly ran into #21 car driver Bill Elliot in the garage.

“Hey man, you should be driving my car,” Elliott said to Said, who was locked out of Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen when qualifying was rained out Friday. As he walked to his Busch car, Said smiled and responded, “Sure, no problem, I’ll drive” . . . Elliott marched into the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing hauler and asked team co-owners Eddie and Len Wood if they would allow him to give up his seat in the No. 21 Ford to Said.

Elliot believes Said will be able to lift the number 21 car up in the rankings if he has a strong finish.

Strawberry Fields (Not) Forever

by The Editors on August 11, 2007

23 23 448 10 07The whole Carlsbad strawberry field issue in the last elections in November was simply too confusing for any level headed resident to figure out. That said, the easiest way to explain it is that the “open space” people won with the passage of Prop. D. Now the new “Prop. D Citizens Liaison Committee” will be conducting “a communitywide assessment process.”

With the first meeting of a new citizens committee Friday morning, Carlsbad launched a six-month process to determine what the future might hold for the privately owned strawberry and flower-growing lands along Cannon Road. “I think we live in an age of very strong opinions based on very superficial knowledge,” said committee member Gary Hill as explanation of why he thought residents should be asked broad questions rather than simply asked what should be done with the strawberry fields.

Hopefully, they’ll build a new skatepark in there somewhere. If they do, then we’re all for it.
