The City of Carlsbad is now accepting proposals from organizations to “finance, design and manage the city’s new technology business incubator program.” The winner will get free office space and the support of the City to help grow clean, green businesses in the community.
The incubator will serve as a place for entrepreneurs to develop sustainable technologies and will provide entrepreneurs support and access to resources and information that might otherwise be inaccessible to them, such as education, contacts and capital. . . . The project is anticipated to be operational by March 2010. When complete, the technology business incubator will function as a public-private partnership in which the city provides the project facility and the contracted organization will develop the program and look for opportunities for public and private grants to provide funding.
The request for proposal is available on the city’s Web site and proposals can be submitted until Monday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. The city will award the contract in December.
The body of Carlsbad’s Bjorn Eklund, 36, was found in a hiking area in South Orange County Friday, September 11, 2009 after his wife reported him missing on Thursday, according to a story in the OC Register.
On Friday, a hiker found a backpack containing some of Eklund’s personal belongings in a hiking area near Crown Valley and Antonio parkways and notified authorities, Amormino said. . . The sheriff’s department sent out a helicopter to scan the area and found Eklund’s body. . . The coroner’s office is investigating whether the man committed suicide, Amormino said. The body had no trauma indicating assault, gunshots or stab wounds, nor were there indications that Eklund fell.
Our thoughts are with Eklund’s family and friends.
One of the last great free parking lots on a California beach will soon be gone as the City of Carlsbad, the California Coastal Commission, and California State Parks have settled a lawsuit regarding the installation of a pay parking kiosk at Tamarack surfing beach (click here for previous coverage).
Under the settlement agreement, State Parks will charge hourly parking, with a two hour minimum and a maximum daily charge of $10, the same day rate fee charged at South Carlsbad State Beach’s Ponto beach. The hourly fee has not yet been set but is agreed to be $2 an hour or less. State Parks originally proposed only a day use fee. Under the settlement agreement, the requirements of the coastal development permit for the project that the California Coastal Commission approved will remain in full effect.
The thing that sucks most about this agreement is that it’s going to push even more people up into the neighborhood surrounding Tamarack and there are way too many people parking there already. The only good news is that people with California State Park parking passes will always have a spot at Tamarack because once they start charging for parking the lot will be mostly empty most of the time.

Theberge said he didn’t feel like he had a World Championship race in him after what he called “a hectic flight from LA to Australia with three kids in tow,” but on race day it didn’t seem to affect him at all. Here’s how he called it on his blog Challengedracing.com:
I had a terrible swim, coming out of the water 8th overall beaten out of the water not only by two other T5 competitors, but also an arm amputee (who, in theory, I should have an advantage over) and a paraplegic (Aussie badass wheelchair racer, Bill Chaffey). . . I started the bike with two T5s in front of me, Ricaldo and Andre. . . Finally at around mile four, Peter Harsch, the Paratri team manager yelled out that I was :41 seconds behind. I knew I could catch him. . . I finished the line 1:24 minutes ahead of Rivaldo, almost seven minutes ahead of Scheiber and 14 minutes ahead of Paul Martin (who, surprisingly, had a lousy race.

We don’t even disagree with their point about the 2nd Amendment, but just from the looks on their faces we can tell these guys get off on strapping their “pieces” on and parading around the streets while smirking like exhibitionists with their flies open.
The San Diego Sheriff’s helicopter was busy again of the skies of Carlsbad this morning (September 9, 2009) after someone was reportedly trying to break into cars on the 7200 block of Columbine Dr, just south of Aviara Parkway, according to a story in the North County Times.
No suspect was found and no thefts were reported, though police found several cars had been opened. . . A person with a flashlight was reportedly looking inside cars in that area about 1:30 a.m., the dispatcher said.
During the summer the the Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team, The Lancer Dancers, placed first in their home qualifying routine at the Elite UDA Dance Camp held at the University of San Diego. That gives them the opportunity to compete in the UDA National Championships in Orlando, Florida February 5-7, 2009. Now they just have to raise the money to get the entire team there. But they have an idea. . .
The Lancer Dancers are teaching dance classes for children in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade at CHS. . . The Kid’s Classes will begin September 23rd for and run for 10 weeks. Dance students will learn dances, technique, and have a chance to perform at the Lancer Dancer Showcase in December at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Center as a “Jr. Lancer Dancer.”
