J.P. Theberge Wins Gold In Australia

by The Editors on September 13, 2009

Podium JpChallenged Carlsbadistan triathlete, J.P. Theberge, won gold in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series on the Gold Coast of Australia yesterday, September 12, 2009, in the T5 category for below-knee (BK) amputees.

Theberge said he didn’t feel like he had a World Championship race in him after what he called “a hectic flight from LA to Australia with three kids in tow,” but on race day it didn’t seem to affect him at all. Here’s how he called it on his blog Challengedracing.com:

I had a terrible swim, coming out of the water 8th overall beaten out of the water not only by two other T5 competitors, but also an arm amputee (who, in theory, I should have an advantage over) and a paraplegic (Aussie badass wheelchair racer, Bill Chaffey). . . I started the bike with two T5s in front of me, Ricaldo and Andre. . . Finally at around mile four, Peter Harsch, the Paratri team manager yelled out that I was :41 seconds behind. I knew I could catch him. . . I finished the line 1:24 minutes ahead of Rivaldo, almost seven minutes ahead of Scheiber and 14 minutes ahead of Paul Martin (who, surprisingly, had a lousy race.

Congrats J.P. For the rest of the story, click the link.

The Riehl World: The ‘Little Men’ Take Up Arms

by Richard J. Riehl on September 11, 2009

The scenes were straight out of a spaghetti Western.

In Encinitas one afternoon last month, 12 self-styled patriots strolled down First Street, the downtown stretch of South Coast Highway, as a similar group had done at Carlsbad’s Village Faire a few weeks earlier. North County’s version of the “Dirty Dozen,” six men and six women, carried unloaded guns in holsters strapped to their waists. They said they were exercising their constitutional right to bear arms.

Six unarmed roadies distributed literature to passers-by.

Some on the sidewalk turned away in fear and disgust, as residents of Dodge City once did when gangs of hooligans rode into town. Above the traffic noise, you could almost hear the plaintive whistling of “Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling,” from the 1952 movie, “High Noon.”

The events were enough to inspire another fairy tale from this columnist.

Once upon a time in the Land of Pink-Tiled Roofs, a collection of very angry little men formed a support group. Resentful that the royal rulers didn’t show them enough respect, they dubbed themselves the Minute Little Men, claiming to be the kingdom’s true patriots.

Carrying Guns In Carlsbad: The Video

by The Editors on September 9, 2009

For those who didn’t think these “open carry” gun guys were nutters the first time we mentioned them back in July 2009, just watch this video and you’ll see exactly what we were talking about.

We don’t even disagree with their point about the 2nd Amendment, but just from the looks on their faces we can tell these guys get off on strapping their “pieces” on and parading around the streets while smirking like exhibitionists with their flies open.

Carlsbadistan Keeping Sheriff Chopper Busy

by The Editors on September 9, 2009

The San Diego Sheriff’s helicopter was busy again of the skies of Carlsbad this morning (September 9, 2009) after someone was reportedly trying to break into cars on the 7200 block of Columbine Dr, just south of Aviara Parkway, according to a story in the North County Times.

No suspect was found and no thefts were reported, though police found several cars had been opened. . . A person with a flashlight was reportedly looking inside cars in that area about 1:30 a.m., the dispatcher said.

Nice work from whoever called the Police.

During the summer the the Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team, The Lancer Dancers, placed first in their home qualifying routine at the Elite UDA Dance Camp held at the University of San Diego. That gives them the opportunity to compete in the UDA National Championships in Orlando, Florida February 5-7, 2009. Now they just have to raise the money to get the entire team there. But they have an idea. . .

The Lancer Dancers are teaching dance classes for children in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade at CHS. . . The Kid’s Classes will begin September 23rd for and run for 10 weeks. Dance students will learn dances, technique, and have a chance to perform at the Lancer Dancer Showcase in December at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Center as a “Jr. Lancer Dancer.”

Now Legoland Wants A Water Park

by The Editors on September 7, 2009

Before it was built Carlsbadistan’s Legoland was positioned as a tiny little theme park “just for small kids” that would be happy staying small. Each year, however, seems to bring new expansion plans from the Merlin Entertainments Group owned theme park.

First it was an aquarium, then the company got the city to change their parking requirements so they could build a hotel and restaurants, now according to the LA Times Legoland is asking the City of Carlsbad to allow them to put in a 5.5 acre waterpark.

San Diego County theme park Legoland has submitted its plan to the city of Carlsbad to build a 5.5-acre water attraction in the park’s northern section, officials said Friday. . . .The water park’s cost and design have yet to be determined, but Legoland spokeswoman Julie Estrada said it would be open by next summer.

The water park, like the aquarium, would have it’s own entry fee meaning there would actually be three amusement parks where previously only one stood. As one Carlsbadistan.com news tipper asks, “I wonder how this will affect the water park at Alga Norte.”

Carlsbad’s Missing Boy Home Safely

by The Editors on September 7, 2009

Yesterday’s story of a missing 10-year-old boy at the beach in Carlsbadistan has a very happy ending. Carlsbad Police were first notified that a boy was missing at 4:45 PM and by 6 PM the San Diego County Sheriff was flying up and down the beach alerting the public to the missing child with a PA. But, according to Police, by 7 PM the search was over and the child was back safely with his parents.

A Carlsbad Police Department operator said the boy apparently wandered off and then, after hearing his name being called from the helicopter, borrowed a cell phone and called his dad.

In a comment on this post people who claim they found the boy said that Christian did not in fact call his dad on a cellphone.

“He was walking down the beach in South Oceanside asking folks which way was Carlsbad,” the commenter said. “Two women asked if he was Christian, he said yes, and a group of about ten of us started waving like crazy to the police helicopter frantically. We waited with the boy for the land police to show up. The boy had never noticed, much less heard the PA system calling out his own name. He really was unaware of any fuss or how much time had passed, he just wanted to walk back home. Police drove him back to Carlsbad.”

Thanks to everyone who commented and cared.
